Umaine Receives Patent For Composite Laminates Bound With Cellulose Nanofibers, Ashley Forbes

The University of Maine has been issued a patent for a process to create strong composite laminates that are bound with cellulose nanofibrils (CNF). This technology, called Cellubound™, is part of UMaine's widening patent portfolio of strong, environmentally friendly products bound with CNF.

The process developed by UMaine researchers involves soaking sheets of paper in a CNF slurry, then layering the soaked sheets together and using a heated press to remove the water and bond the layers. The resulting product, made entirely of paper and uniquely impregnated with CNF, is strong, stiff and board-like, with the potential to replace plastics …

Construction of the $78 million Engineering Education and Design Center (EEDC) on the University of Maine campus began in May 2020, with workers following state-mandated health and safety guidelines. Work on the 105,000-square-foot facility is expected to be completed in spring 2022.

Design and construction of EEDC involved 78 graduates of the University of Maine, many from the College of Engineering. Self-driving cars will offer access to r ide-sharing and ride-hailing with their suite of modern conveniences. However, many people with visual impairments who use these services rely on a human driver to safely locate their vehicle.

A research group led by the Virtual Environments and Multimodal Interaction Laboratory (VEMI Lab) at the University of Maine is developing a smart phone app that provides the navigational assistance needed for people with disabilities and seniors to enjoy ride-sharing and ride-hailing, collectively termed mobility-as-a-service, with the latest in automotive technology. Researchers Find Possible Link Between Drinking Water And Mysterious Kidney Disease, Christel Peters

UMaine researchers contributed to a March 2020 article that studies the effects of chemicals found in drinking water - and how the combination of certain chemicals could be the cause of a mysterious, chronic kidney disease impacting millions of people around the world.

Assistant Professor of Environmental Physiology, Nishad Jayasundara, and doctoral candidate Remy Babich, report that the consumption of chemicals and exposure to other environmental stressors could lead to kidney dysfunction. Their findings have implications for kidney development in children who may consume this water.

The University of Maine has been issued a patent for a process to create construction materials that are bound with cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) and offer increased durability and environmental friendliness.

While the technology can be used to create a variety of commonly used building materials, the primary application for this patent focuses on a replacement for particle board, which is used widely in furniture and countertops.

Addressing the opioid epidemic in the United States requires expanding access to treatment and work to prevent the more than 130 deaths each day from opioid-related drug overdoses nationwide.

Maine's rate of fatal overdoses due to opioids - the class of drugs that include heroin and morphine as well as fentanyl, oxycodone, and hydrocodone - has increased significantly in t he last decade; with serious consequences for individuals, families, and communities.
