Learning Outcomes For A Business Information Systems Undergraduate Program, Joelle Elmaleh, Steven Miller, Paul S. Goodman Aug 2008

Learning Outcomes For A Business Information Systems Undergraduate Program, Joelle Elmaleh, Steven Miller, Paul S. Goodman

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a learning outcomes framework for an Information Systems (IS) undergraduate program. This framework includes a supporting software application that goes beyond any other attempt reported to date to integrate learning outcomes into program-wide and course-wide curriculum development, ongoing curriculum redesign, and student learning support. The Learning Outcomes Management System (LOMS) described here is a first-of-a-kind information system created as part of implementing a program-wide learning outcomes framework in a university setting. Our learning outcomes framework is distinct in that 1) it is based on a three-level hierarchically structured definition of learning outcomes that consistently apply to both the …

Activist Training In The Academy: Developing A Master's Program In Environmental Advocacy And Organizing At Antioch New England Graduate School, Steve Chase Jan 2006

Activist Training In The Academy: Developing A Master's Program In Environmental Advocacy And Organizing At Antioch New England Graduate School, Steve Chase

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This curriculum action research study begins by raising the question of whether environmental studies programs within higher education should launch activist training programs for public interest advocates and grassroots organizers working for nonprofit organizations focused on environmental protection, corporate accountability, and social justice. Answering that question in the affirmative, the study then focuses on the theoretical issues underlying the creation of activist training programs within the academy, specifically within environmental studies programs, and reports on a case study of the successful development of a master’s program in Environmental Advocacy and Organizing. The first section on theoretical issues focuses first on …

The Inverse Problem: Christianity Through A Mathematical Lens, Sharon K. Robbert May 2003

The Inverse Problem: Christianity Through A Mathematical Lens, Sharon K. Robbert

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2003

An inverse problem is a partner problem that reverses some type of direct problem. Usually the inverse problem is more challenging to solve than the direct problem: integration is more challenging than differentiation, factoring large numbers is more challenging than multiplying numbers. In this paper, the author poses that using mathematical thinking to understand the concepts of theological principles is the direct problem to the much more challenging inverse problem of using theological thinking to influence understanding in mathematics. Acknowledging that a problem is difficult allows one to be satisfied with understanding small pieces and progressing slowly to a complete …

Gravitational Acceleration In Hades, Andrew Simoson Jun 2001

Gravitational Acceleration In Hades, Andrew Simoson

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2001

Does acceleration due to gravity increase or decrease upon descending from Earth’s surface? The answer—as we show—depends on one’s model for Earth’s density. For our Earth, gravity increases before it collapses to zero at Earth center.

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch May 1997

Mathematics And Values: Can Philosophy Guide Projects?, Michael H. Veatch

ACMS Conference Proceedings 1997

The philosophy of mathematics has provided insight on questions of foundations and mathematical truth; however, it has not been very fruitful in guiding the practice of mathematics. This paper attempts to find points of contact between a Christian worldview and the choice of mathematical projects and methods. Three areas are considered: (i) dubitability in current research, (ii) the intrinsic value of contemporary mathematics to contemporary society, and (iii) the affirmation of human value in the use of mathematics. Finally, a framework for valuing mathematics is proposed as an encouragement to think more deeply about how a Christian might choose a …

Color Computer Graphics As Applied To Introductory Calculus Instruction, Kathy B. Windhorst, Ralph E. Lee Jul 1984

Color Computer Graphics As Applied To Introductory Calculus Instruction, Kathy B. Windhorst, Ralph E. Lee

Computer Science Technical Reports

The use of computer graphics to support and enhance the presentation of introductory calculus concepts is described.

Computer graphics provides more accurate graph sketching, consistent presentations and the ability to develop mathematical models incrementally. The addition of extensive use of color aids even more, adding contrast, color keying, dimensionality, and interest to an illustration.

Ten lessons have been designed, developed, and evaluated. They employ a set of subroutines which interface to the NBC APC microcomputer graphics software. These lessons as developed and evaluated may be used interactively in the classroom or by individuals, or noninteractively in the classroom by the …
