Competencies Needed By The Chief Executive Officer Of A Local Affiliate Of The National Urban League, Inc., Walter Melvyn Brame
Dissertations
This study, using a modified Delphi method, generated and measured the perception of importance for twenty-three competencies needed for the effective leadership of a local affiliate of the National Urban League. Second, the study sought to determine which of the competencies were performed, shared, delegated or not performed at the respective affiliates. Third, the study sought to determine the extent to which selected demographic factors were related to the perception of importance. Last, the study sought to build a consensus as to the importance of the competencies.
The perceptions of the importance of the twenty-three competencies on a four point …

Using the maximum Rsquare improvement technique, the variables of high school GPA, college GPA, age entering the …
English As A Second Language: Evaluation Of A Language Program Designed For & Implemented In The Colombian Oil Company's Research Institute, Patience Nave
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
An incredible proliferation of knowledge has generated a critical need for professionals in all fields to have access to current information and research results. Costs for study and research are extremely high, particularly in science fields, and most professionals seek to minimize loss in time and funds by avoiding duplication of efforts. Language is often a handicap, preventing the voluntary sharing of valuable information between individuals and countries, and many recognize the establishment of a universal language as a means of eliminating this unnecessary barrier. English is rapidly becoming accepted as a universal means of communication, but those who seek …

The Identification Of Gifted Children At The Kindergarten And First-Grade Level In An Urban And Rural Population, Flora Carter Roberts
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
This study examined the nomination procedures and assessment instruments employed in the gifted programs in ten urban and four rural southeastern Virginia school divisions. The odds-ratio, a measure of association, was the primary data analysis technique employed.
In urban divisions in which K-1 membership was reported as white, black, other, white children were four times as likely to be a member of the gifted program at the end of …

A Study Of Enrollment Trends In Accredited Vocational Programs In Small Schools In North Central Washington, Lyle D. Blackburn
A Study Of Enrollment Trends In Accredited Vocational Programs In Small Schools In North Central Washington, Lyle D. Blackburn
All Graduate Projects
Vocational enrollment trends of small school districts in North Central Washington were studied. Seven school districts located in Okanogan, Douglas and Chelan counties were charted. The data provided by the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction show individual program enrollment as well as total vocational enrollment compared to total high school enrollment. The results support the hypothesis that small schools' vocational enrollment remains constant with regard to high school enrollment. Recommendations were made for further studies, to include a more in-depth study of large schools as well as the smaller schools.

The Relationship Between School Principals' Self-Perceived Brain Hemispheric Processing Modes And Their Self-Perceived Leadership Styles, Barbara Mcswain Kean
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study was designed to examine the relationship between the self-perceived preferred brain hemispheric processing of West Virginia public school principals and their self-perceived leadership styles. Seventy-five respondents completed the Herrmann Brain Dominance Profile, the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire, and a demographics sheet. Data were analyzed using the General Linear Model of the Statistical Analysis Systems (SAS). Chi Square analyses at the 0.05 alpha level were used to test two directional hypotheses that guided this study. Both hypotheses were confirmed.
Public school principals in West Virginia who perceived themselves as preferring mental processes that are predominantly left train hemispheric perceived …

Planning And Managing School Facilities, Theodore J. Kowalski
Planning And Managing School Facilities, Theodore J. Kowalski
Educational Leadership Faculty Publications
Theodore Kowalski addresses the administrative procedures associated with planning and managing school facilities. Practitioner interest in school facilities has been growing rapidly in recent years because decades of neglect, poor planning, and cost cutting have created a situation in which large numbers of America's school buildings are in need of major repair or replacement.
At the same time, the realization that costs related to repair and replacement have escalated significantly has fueled a new concern among school facility planning and management.
Writing for school administrators, superintendents, and board members as well as graduate students in education, Kowalski discusses planning from …
"Incentives To Alleviate Teacher Frustrations: Inroads To Better Work Production For Teachers And Administrators, Barry Kanpol
"Incentives To Alleviate Teacher Frustrations: Inroads To Better Work Production For Teachers And Administrators, Barry Kanpol
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This article first looks at how teachers' apt work is contrasted with that of teacher-perceived inept administrative work habits. Second, a distinction is made between teacher official and pragmatic work zones. More teacher autonomy was achieved through completing administrative duties within the pragmatic zone. This acted as a constant source of teacher struggle and frustration, yet concurrently this was also a possible source of liberation. Conclusions suggest that both teacher and administrators first open communication lines by airing the core of the problem that bothers them, and second, create united normative platforms on "issues." This would help to alleviate teacher-related …

American Public School Ideologies: A Need For Reform?, Sharon A. Raver
American Public School Ideologies: A Need For Reform?, Sharon A. Raver
Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications
Historically, American education has been based on the democratic ideologies that education will provide equality of opportunity and enhance economic benefits. However, public education has not been very successful in achieving these goals. Because of this, disillusionment has grown and alternatives to monopoly public education, such as vouchers and tax credit plans, have been offered. Criticism and analyses directed toward these new options for public schooling are discussed. Effects they could have on public education, expected and unexpected, are addresses. It appears that public education is at a critical discussion point in its ideological history. Some of the choices facing …
A Performance Appraisal Model For Postsecondary Education, Peggy Connolly
A Performance Appraisal Model For Postsecondary Education, Peggy Connolly
Dissertations and Theses
Purpose. Although performance appraisal is an important factor in the successful operation of organizations, it is often a difficult and threatening task. Traditional approaches to evaluation have proved to be neither effective nor in legal compliance. This problem affects postsecondary institutions, where customary subjective appraisal contributes to undesirable employment discrimination.
This study provides postsecondary administrators with an effective and legally defensible model of performance appraisal. Research addressed these questions: (1) What does statutory law mandate in appraisal? (2) What issues, patterns, and decisions concerning appraisal have been identified through the judicial process, and what degree of consistency has been shown …
