Learning to write their own words increases students' success in learning to read, provides practice in thinking skills, increases their self-concept and provides early positive attitudes about writing.

However, most writing done in first grade classrooms today consists mainly of copying from the blackboard. This is a tedious and boring task for first graders, and gives them bad attitudes about writing as they begin their school careers. Nuclear Armament/Disarmament As A Topic In Decision-Making Models In Secondary Social Studies Classrooms, Karen Holman Reeves

This study sought to determine the current status of the nuclear armament/disarmament issue as a topic for the moral decision-making model in secondary social studies curriculums and to establish guidelines for its inclusion in future lessons. A review of the relevant literature provided the basis for a questionnaire mailed to four hundred, randomly selected social studies department chairpersons. Their attitudes regarding the legitimacy of the topic and methods employed in instructional lessons were addressed. Survey results were categorized according to respondents' incorporation of the topic into their curriculum and whether they taught in public or private institutions. A majority of …

The goal of this project was to survey selected school systems in the State of Florida and to determine their philosophies, policies: and techniques for grading reading. The area of special concern was children reading below assigned grade level but up to potential. The focus of this paper was to identify reports to parents that dealt in a positive way with below grade level readers and allowed for effective as well as cognitive development. This NebGuide describes the use of nonprotein nitrogen and bypass protein sources to fulfill the protein requirements of growing and finishing steers, heifers and bulls. Protein supplementation can be an expensive feed cost for cattle producers. Through the use of nonprotein nitrogen (NPN) and bypass protein sources, however, these costs can be reduced. Bypass protein is the protein that escapes breakdown in the rumen and passes "as is" into the small intestine where it is digested and absorbed. Strip plots are an effective means of comparing soil and crop management practices. Guidelines are given for establishing strip plots and evaluating the results. Farmers, extension and industry personnel, and researchers have a common interest in strip plots set out on farm fields to study various soil and crop management practices. Strip plots or tests are usually designed to compare differences between tillage methods, herbicide treatments, varieties, fertilizer sources or rates, methods of chemical application, and many other crop production inputs. There are two general categories of furniture fabrics: those meant for use as slipcovers, and those for use as upholstery. Slipcovers are designed to fit snugly and yet be removable for cleaning. Upholstery fabrics are generally heavier; they are nailed or stapled directly to the furniture's frame or bonded to the padding. They are not removable.

Several kinds of plant parasitic nematodes (small, soil-inhabiting roundworms) are associated with root injury, poor plant color, stunted growth, and reduced grain yields in field corn. Symptoms caused by these pests are often confused with root rot diseases, nutritional deficiencies or climatic stresses. This NebGuide describes the symptoms and disease cycle of brown patch and gives recommendations for its prevention and control through management, including use of fungicides.

Brown patch of turfgrass is caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia solani Kuehn. All commonly cultivated turfgrasses in Nebraska are affected by this disease, but differences in susceptibility exist within cultivars of the various turfgrass species. Primary hosts are bentgrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue and annual bluegrass. O estudo demonstra que em dezenove currículos adotados na escola secundária brasileira, no período 1838-1942, houve uma correlação negativa significativa entre a proporção de carga-horária designada que estudos de ciências e humanidades. Os resultados apoiam as observações encontradas na literatura, as quais sugerem que a importância atribuída a cada uma dessas áreas, nos currículos estudados, foi interdependente.

The study shows that in nineteen Brazilian secondary school curricula adopted during the years 1838-1942, there was a significant negative correlation between the proportion of hourly teaching loads assigned to science and humanities studies. This project involves the investigation into one aspect of nonverbal communication, gesticulation. First, I will address two basic issues of nonverbal communication: 1) the universality of nonverbal communication; and 2) the conscious/unconscious controversy. Next, I will profile recent research on human gesticulation. Finally, I will present my study of gestures used in American English and Mexican Spanish. In conclusion, I will discuss the implications this information has on language instruction.

ESOL teachers are often asked by their colleagues or school administrators to do translations. Yet few of them know very much about the profession of translator. This paper is designed to give them insights into the field of translation and what skills are necessary to be a professional translator. It describes three translator training programs in the United States and contains a proposal for a translator training program based on individualization through learning contracts. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate how relatively common- place materials such as personal photos can be meaningfully utilized in the ESL classroom. The project contains a collection of simulated personal photographs which are divided into four topic areas. One authentic photo has been selected to represent each topic area. Immediately following the photographs in each topic area is a summary of lexical, structural and cross-cultural items which can be determined from the photos. The main body of each topic area is made up of teaching activities divided into two categories: focused activities and discussion/ cross-cultural activities.
