There was a need to determine the recreation needs of girls in the pre-adolescent age range of nine through fourteen years old so that municipal recreation professionals may program activities to meet the desires of this specific population. In order to do this, a testing instrument was developed. The test, a recreation preference schedule, used closed questions exclusively, unlike many of the available checklist surveys. The recreation preference schedule was modeled after the Edwards Personal Preference Schedule that was used in counseling. The new test, containing one hundred questions, utilized ten recreation activity categories. It was checked for reliability and …

A study was made of the individualized science instruction in the middle schools and junior high schools of Kentucky. The status of the programs was investigated by an information survey. The instrument sought answers as to the size of the schools, organization of the schools, kinds of science taught and the frequency of use of individualized science approaches. Methods of financing and the administering plans, the objectives of the plans, and the strategies implemented to achieve these were parts of the study. The chronological development of elementary school media centers in Kentucky was traced through an examination of: state constitutions, school laws, biennial reports of the superintendent of public instruction, Department of Education Bulletins, school board minutes, books on education and library periodicals. Kenwood Media Center, Jefferson County Public Schools, Louisville, Kentucky was chosen as the model example of a media center 1975. It was examined in the following areas: personnel, collection of materials and equipment, appropriations, services, organization of center and facilities.

Surveys were sent to the 182 school superintendents in the public schools of Kentucky in order to identify the teachers of exploratory foreign language programs. The survey dealt with three areas: (1) the foreign language program in grades 5-8, (2) the foreign language program in grades 9-12, (3) plans to implement an exploratory program. 153 superintendents (842) returned the surveys and 25 districts (14%) were identified as having a foreign language program in grades 6-8. No foreign language program below grade 6 was identified. Seven new programs were initiated in the 1975-76 school year and five additional school districts plan …

This is a study of a practicum-based child development curriculum for eighth grade students in a middle school setting. One hundred students were tested on self-image concepts and attitudes toward young children after they had been exposed to the curriculum. The experimental group was involved in the "Exploring Childhood" course which gave them experience in actual child care agencies in the community. The control group students used the more traditional child development unit in the home economics program.

Testing showed that the experimental group made significantly higher self-concept scores than the control group. There was no significant difference between the …

It is intended to assist elementary physical education teachers in establishing and maintaining a program based on current research and literature in the field.

The experiment reported in this study is an example of a small investigation which an in-service art teacher can make, along with his regular teaching. It compared the effects of two instructional methods or to different teacher behaviors, on the students, in teaching drawing. In the decade (1920-1930) that followed numerous textbooks as such appeared for the teacher of speech, and courses in public speaking were added to high school curriculums in many states.

In Kentucky, in 1929, the State Department of Public Education advised and urged the high schools to add this course to their curriculum and to encourage all students to take it. Many of the high schools established separate departments for this course; others added it to their courses in English.
