Using action research with qualitative data collection methods, this study documents the leadership of the researcher's implementation of a collaborative arts integrative teaching model in the literacy and art classrooms of an urban elementary school for grades three, four, and five. Understanding by Design (UbD) (Wiggins & McTighe, 2005) was used as the unifying theoretical framework by which a constructivist pedagogical methodology was developed. Pedagogical techniques and methods used were adopted from Writing for Understanding (WU) (Hawkins, et al., 2008) with the Painted Essay (Leddy, 1999), Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) (Housen, 2000-2001, 2001-2002), and new media technology. The purpose of this study was to look for correlations between levels of preference for multiple intelligences and performance rates on standardized tests, as determined by utilizing the Teele Inventory of Multiple Intelligences and standardized test scores. The research was conducted in small rural elementary school in southern New Jersey where the researcher was the art teacher. The sample consisted of the entire fifth grade class (n= 64) who provided parental consent and had the necessary test scores available. In 1984, the Getty Center for Education in the Arts initiated a program called Discipline Based Art Education (DBAE), which offered new criteria for teaching art. The basic aim of DBAE was to introduce additional disciplines into an art education program, with an emphasis placed on the teaching of art history, art criticism and aesthetics. To date, no true supportive data has been found substantiating the effectiveness of the DBAE program.

The problem was to investigate the effects of both active learning and direct instruction (lecture/demonstration) on students' ability to produce a continuous tone, ten step gray scale, black and white photographic print.

The purpose of this study was to create and investigate the psychometric properties of a tool which evaluated fourth and fifth grade student's performance in the visual arts.

The subjects for the study included 104 fourth and fifth graders from a public elementary and middle school in southern New Jersey, comprising students from a diverse socioeconomic background and ethnicity.

The purpose of this study was to examine the interactions between the aesthetic criteria for evaluating art and learning styles between cultures. The problems were to investigate differences among learning styles and aesthetic preferences for painting styles between Black and Euro-American students.

Fifty-five undergraduates of Black-American and Euro-American descent from a state college in rural southern New Jersey participated in the study. The Group Embedded Figures Test was administered to determine the learning styles of field-sensitive or field-independence for each student. The purpose of this study was to determine the attitudes of elementary classroom teachers toward art and the creative process in their classrooms. The hypotheses of the study focused on teachers' attitudes and uses of art as a means of creativity and enhancement of academic subjects.

The purposes of this study were to investigate relationships between hemisphericity and preference for spatial-dimensionality in the production of art and to determine whether cognitive processes are different in students who prefer different spatial activities. Specifically, this study investigated the relationships between students' preference for two and three dimensional art projects and their scores on Excell's Hemispheric Mode Indicator (HMI) test.
