Increasing College Students Awareness Of Technologies Impacts In Their Daily Lives, Melissa Gutierrez
Increasing College Students Awareness Of Technologies Impacts In Their Daily Lives, Melissa Gutierrez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many college students today may spend an excessive amount of time on technology. Excessive technology may leave an impact on their mental and physical health leading to poor eating habits or obesity, anxiety and can even have an impact on their academics. When college students learn about how to manage their technology use, it is likely they will focus more on the negative impacts to benefit their health and wellbeing. To address the overuse of technology, I created a one-day workshop for Theta Alpha Sigma sorority college students at Cal State Monterey Bay.

Improving Workers’ Effectiveness When Working With Unhoused Individuals, Danika J. Bralek
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
When volunteering with individuals without housing, volunteers may not know what to expect or how to act when assisting this population. Without proper preparation, these volunteers may end up further marginalizing the population they are working with, putting themselves in danger, or failing to assist these human beings. When volunteers know more about how to assist these individuals in need, they can properly manage each client’s case and assist them in receiving proper aid. In order to address preparedness for volunteers working with these vulnerable populations, I have created an instructional video addressing proper rapport building, understanding needs and correct …

Monterey County Free Libraries is a public government organization that provides a wide range of resources and services for residents of Monterey County including a Literacy Program that serves 52 learners who are eligible to participate in this capstone project. The macro problem that this project is related to is the increasing number of immigrant residents who do not have access to equal educational opportunities in Monterey County. The micro problem is that learners who have participated in the Literacy Program are not confident with their English pronunciation even after their initial tutoring sessions conclude. This project provided an educational …
Addressing Imposter Syndrome Among First-Generation College Students, Ana Gomez Salvatierra
Addressing Imposter Syndrome Among First-Generation College Students, Ana Gomez Salvatierra
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The transition to college may be challenging for first-generation college students (FGCS). FGCS are individuals whose parents did not have the opportunity to pursue their bachelor's degrees. Therefore, FGCS may not have enough knowledge of the expectations of college. As a result, they may experience imposter syndrome, family achievement guilt, and not have enough social support to guide them through their college journey. This capstone paper focuses on the experiences of FGCS who have encountered imposter syndrome, family achievement guilt, and how social support can provide them with the reassurance that they do belong in the spaces they are in. …

Intervention Program To Ease The Transition Out Of High School, Marissa Sareñana
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
“At-risk” youth are more likely to drop out of school and less likely to pursue higher education than their counterparts, hindering their economic future. This project was implemented at Learning for Life Charter School (LFLCS), an alternative 7th-12th grade school for at-risk youth. The project included conducting various readiness assessments and an education intervention designed to increase seniors’ level of preparedness for life after graduation. Seniors met individually with social work interns to identify a post-graduation plan, formulating short and long term goals. Once students formulated their post-graduation plans, they were guided on the necessary requirements to transition into their …

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The Monterey County Health Department Planning, Evaluation and Policy (PEP) Unit's goals are to empower the community, enhance public health and safety, ensure access to care, and engage the workforce. MCHD encourages all employees to understand social justice and equity for low-income and communities of color. Understanding and addressing health inequalities and justice in the county can improve overall health for everyone. The digital divide during the COVID-19 pandemic impacted too many Monterey County residents. The lack of computer access, computer literacy, and internet access may have impacted vaccination rates and even delayed COVID-19 resources. Utilizing the Monterey County COVID-19 …
Teaching Healthy Communication Skills For College Students With Disabilities, Molly Mcshane
Teaching Healthy Communication Skills For College Students With Disabilities, Molly Mcshane
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
For college students with disabilities, interpersonal communication can be difficult. There have not been sufficient supportive services for college students with disabilities when it comes to learning communication skills in a college environment. Without effective communication skills, college students with disabilities may face social barriers and fewer chances for personal connections, which may lead to social isolation. In order to address this issue, I planned to create a 2-hour lesson for members of the Student Awareness for Disability Empowerment club (S.A.D.E) at California State University, Monterey Bay.

Lifelong Learning: Improving Older Adult Technology Use, Lisa Gonzales
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Older adults who lack technology skills may become increasingly socially isolated, especially during the pandemic. The objective for these older adults is to feel confident, have renewed independence, and age successfully. Developing new learning opportunities about technology and providing information about technology, enables older adults to be motivated and confident to participate in a new-to-them tool for communication. It is an opportunity for older adults to learn new skills that will benefit them now and in the future. This workshop will allow older adults to become familiar with how technology will benefit them. This digital is specific to new technology …

Learning About Healthy Relationships And Sexuality For Adults With Disabilities, Vanessa Karjack
Learning About Healthy Relationships And Sexuality For Adults With Disabilities, Vanessa Karjack
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Many adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities receive little to no sex education; as a result, they often struggle to have fulfilling and healthy relationships, experience limitations in physical interactions, and are at risk of being taken advantage of by others. Sommaro et al. (2019) explained that individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) and developmental disabilities (DD) are often placed into one of two categories: they are treated as either eternal children or sexual deviants. These ideas are based on old knowledge and are known to be inaccurate. However, current systems of care struggle to move forward from these notions. A …

Most of the students served come from low-income families, from minority groups and are considered first generation college students. Central Coast High School Student Scholarship Fundraiser, Alex Beamer
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Central Coast Continuation High School (CCCHS or CCHS) is designed around the philosophy of giving students in danger of not graduating a second chance at a diploma with alternative education strategies. The problem this Capstone aims to remedy is that many of these students cannot access college for a variety of reasons after graduating high school. These students are stigmatized for attending a continuation school, are in low socio-economic (SES) brackets, and lack scholarship access - these issues prevent college access. Consequences of this problem include future lack of access to higher paying jobs, loss of societal potential, and continuing …

Educating Adults With Disabilities On Stress Coping Techniques, Sydney Coyle
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
For average adults, managing stress may be a challenge. Adults with disabilities may be particularly challenged because they may not have the cognitive abilities to process information and emotions as the typical adult. Adults who have disabilities such as down syndrome and autism may have difficulty finding stress reduction strategies that best suit them and their experiences. To address this issue, I will be conducting three days of curriculum and activities on stress management and coping for the adults receiving services at Hope Services in Salinas, California .
Women Faculty Of Color, Higher Education, And Sociocultural Change, Luz Areli Medina
Women Faculty Of Color, Higher Education, And Sociocultural Change, Luz Areli Medina
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
This capstone will focus on women faculty of color who are underrepresented in faculty positions in predominantly white institutions. Although not all women faculty of color experience discriminatory treatment we can not ignore the lived experiences of these women who are in a disadvantage within academia. The lack of diversification, unequal representation, and socio-cultural understanding prompts society to take a closer insight to determine the necessary steps in facilitating institutional change within higher education. In order to promote equality for women faculty of color I recommend changing the institutionalized policies, developing quality support and mentoring groups in order to hinder …
Increasing Awareness Of Romantic Behaviors In Former Foster Youth, Kimberly Beardshear
Increasing Awareness Of Romantic Behaviors In Former Foster Youth, Kimberly Beardshear
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Because of their inexperience, emerging adults often have a difficult time navigating healthy romantic relationships. For many, the skills necessary for quality relationships are usually learned through parents, friends, or mentors. Foster youth, in particular, may struggle more in developing and sustaining romantic relationships due to the lack of or inconsistent parental guidance or mentoring. To address this, I have created a two-hour lesson for emerging adult foster youth attending Hartnell College in Salinas, California. The content will be comprised of the characteristics of a healthy relationship, role-play scenarios, identifying unhealthy relationship behaviors, and how to use healthy relationship behaviors.
The Importance Of Introducing Growth Mindset To Childcare Professionals, Jenn Hall
The Importance Of Introducing Growth Mindset To Childcare Professionals, Jenn Hall
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
In this day and age, many children are guided through school by instructors and leaders which evaluate their capabilities. This guidance can include phrases such as, “you draw so well!” or “you’re really good at ____”. The use of evaluative comments is a dilemma because it could potentially sort children into different ability groups, which could cause children to feel down on themselves when put in such situations.
Early care and education teachers use praise often with young children. However, many teachers may not realize that this praise is evaluative and may make children think their abilities are fixed and …

Support Groups, Wise Advice, Gloria Martinez
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The need for parents to attend programs such as the Parent Project and understand the effectiveness of parent education classes is important, especially for those raising troubled or out of control youth. At Partners For Peace they provide just that, parent education through the Parent Project program. It has been stated that support groups help parents alleviate stress (Armenta and Huerta, 2015) therefore, the project consisted of bringing former Parent Project graduates together to continue supporting each other by reconnecting them in a barbeque, providing free food and games for them and their families, and hosting an enrichment workshop facilitated …

250 Words Of I Don't Understand: Reading Struggles For Freshmen College Students, Alicia Bushey
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The focus of this Capstone project is on the reading struggles of first year college students. This is important because reading is a fundamental need in secondary education and in our society. If people are challenged in this area, they will struggle both in higher education, as well as certain aspects of daily living. The three primary stakeholder perspectives examined were college teachers and tutors, because of their relevant expertise, as well as their roles and responsibilities. Based on an analysis of the data and the relevant research literature, action was taken to help first-year college students overcome their reading …
