This poster session represents an ethnographic study of a hybrid foreign language class, focusing on the challenges created by students’ multiliteracy practices. Students range from high schoolers enrolled in dual programs, to heritage speakers, to adults who look for a career change. Reaching such a diverse group of students can be challenging but challenges create Third Spaces where learning is expanded and literacies improved (Smagorinsky, 2021; Gutierrez, 2011; Hulme et al., 2009; Lynch, 2008).

Text Comprehension In Monolingual And Bilingual Adult Readers, Sharan K. Grewal, Deanna Friesen, Olivia Ward
Undergraduate Student Research Internships Conference
The present study examined whether University students who learned English as a second language differed from English monolingual students on their ability to detect inconsistent content in short informational texts about animals. Adults completed a self-paced reading task, performed text recalls, and completed a True/False test. Half of the texts contained information in the 5th sentence that contradicted the 2nd sentence’s information (inconsistent condition). The other half did not contain any contradictions (consistent condition). Participants also completed language and cognitive tasks as individual differences measures. Results revealed a significant interaction between language group and consistency, wherein monolingual adults spent more …

When popular media and many individuals discuss changes in English, some erroneously contend that the language has always been the same and changes amount to little more than “politically correct woke liberalism” desired by only certain people. The English language continually evolves as a natural process that nothing can force nor prevent. Field-specific language also changes with increased understanding and knowledge. This study investigated the factors affecting American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) student success at a Native American Indian University (NAIU) in the Midwest. Thirty-nine students who graduated from Tribal College University (TCU) contributed to this study as they represented the student population at NAIU. This exploratory study was guided by three research questions that analyzed the collected data through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software tool. The two tools utilized in this study were the Pearson Correlation and the Independent Samples t-tests. As a large nation covering 1/9 of the Earth’s surface, Russia and its language necessarily draw linguistic attention. Between the time of the Russian Revolution (1917) until now, Russian speakers (both from Russia itself and former Soviet territories) immigrated to the United States in four or five waves. Russian is currently identified as one of the world’s Critical Languages, according to the U.S. State Department. U.S. Census data indicate that Russian language spoken in respondents’ homes increased by 393% between 1980-2010, with just under a million people speaking Russian in their homes in 2011. We developed a partnership between the College Library and the Education Department to launch a learning laboratory that partners adult learners from our neighboring community with our undergraduate students to create authentic learning experiences centered on building digital literacy skills. In 2016, a collaboration began between UNI faculty and students in service learning courses in the Department of Languages & Literatures and classes in English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) at the YWCA of Black Hawk County. Pre-service educators in a section of "Exploring Socio-Cultural Perspectives on Diversity in Educational Contexts" were introduced to the concept of critical literacy. Throughout the course of the semester, students were provided with the opportunity to apply their knowledge of this framework through a series of discussions around the young adult novel, Does My Head Look Big in This? Over the past 20 years, courses addressing human rights have grown dramatically at both the undergraduate and graduate levels worldwide. Many of these courses are housed in specific disciplines, focus on specific issues, and require practical experience in the form of internships/practicums. Amid this growth there is a need to reflect on teaching human rights including the challenges, fears, and best practices.
