Pre-Primary Children's Progress And The School Development Plan, Elizabeth A. Moulin Jan 1997

Pre-Primary Children's Progress And The School Development Plan, Elizabeth A. Moulin

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

In recent years several policy changes have occurred in Western Australia regarding the provision of pre-compulsory education, particularly for children turning five. These changes have led to education of such children centred largely in full-time, on-site classes rather than in sessional, independent community centres, resulting in pre-primary education becoming mainstream school business. As such it is incorporated in the administrative, managerial and educational policies of the school including school development planning. The school development plan (SDP), a major tool of accountability within the school, provides a planning framework in selected priority areas in which methods of assessment and evaluation of …

October: An Education Journal, Rowan Cahill

Rowan Cahill

This 8-page pamphlet/zine is written in the form of a diary for the month of October, 1997, and was published by Bull Ant Press, Bowral (1997). In it the author comments widely on contemporary education issues, in particular the modern trend towards the corporatisation of education, a process he sees as devaluing independent and critical thought in favour of wall-to-wall assessments and examining, utility, bureaucratisation, and education reflecting "corporate and market place ideologies and practices".

Acting Out Caring: An Andogynous Trait, Clayton Funk Jan 1990

Acting Out Caring: An Andogynous Trait, Clayton Funk

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

A problem in gender studies concerns frequent critique of sex-role stereotypes. But how often do we analyze characteristics that men and women have in common? The notion is doubtful that women must be essentially nurturant and empathic, and that men must be analytical and assertive. The strongest educators possess the best of both, no matter the gender, and are usually capable of modeling a sensibility of caring about learning.

Plato And The Computer, Philip Novak Dec 1987

Plato And The Computer, Philip Novak

Philip Novak

"Philosophy?

Looking out at the faces in philosophy lecture hall, I often detect widespread bewilderment. Some look forlorn, others worried. Mostly I spot the grimace worn by those who have unwillingly entered some twilight zone of experience. It says: How in God's name did I get in here? It is often accompanied by an equally expressive look: How do I get out?" ~ from the chapter

A.I.M. Revisited, Jack A. Hobbs Jan 1984

A.I.M. Revisited, Jack A. Hobbs

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

In case you may have forgotten: AIM is the acronym for Art in the Mainstream, a statement of "value and commitment", authored by Edmund Burke Feldman. AIM first appeared in the March '82 issue of Art Education and then again in the September issue where it was the subject of a "mini issue." According to AIM, art means three things: work, language, and values. Americans need to relearn the value of work, and art is the best way to do this. Visual imagery is a type of language, and, like any language, it needs to be learned. Finally, art and …

The Nature Of Philosophical Criticism, Ann L. Sherman Jan 1984

The Nature Of Philosophical Criticism, Ann L. Sherman

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

Nielsen challenges philosophers to examine the nature of philosophy. He criticizes them for adhering to 'philosophy for philosophy's' sake and points out the non-neutrality of philosophy. Nielsen and other radical philosophers ask: In what sense are the concepts and distinctions which philosopher address 'ordinary'? What are the societal influences on the formation of their discourse? What are the societal consequences of their discourse? Can philosophy be conceived in such a way as to perform a critical service to society? and In what ways does or should philosophy interface with other disciplines?

The Humanism Of Herbert Read, Charles G. Wieder Jan 1984

The Humanism Of Herbert Read, Charles G. Wieder

Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

As readers of the Social Theory Caucus Bulletin, you are probably, by and large, more familiar with Herbert Read's views on art education than others in our field. One would expect that you are also generally more sympathetic with his theoretical orientation as well as more aware of the relevance of his work to current educational concerns. This essay will focus on the historical basis of Read's moral ideas, and their implications for the work that lies ahead for this group of socially concerned art educators.

Books by Taylor faculty, staff, and administrators

Demonstrating that each of the three major psychological world views—naturalistic, humanistic, and transpersonal—has Its own singular weakness. Mark P. Cosgrove suggests an alternative: Christian theism. "A world view based on Christian beliefs." says Cosgrove. "adequately copes with the weaknesses of modern psychological world views and provides a suitable framework for the study of man and the development of solutions to human problems."

Dogmatism And Philosophy: Their Relation To Teacher Acceptance And Understanding Of The New Social Studies, Donald E. Anctil May 1972

Dogmatism And Philosophy: Their Relation To Teacher Acceptance And Understanding Of The New Social Studies, Donald E. Anctil

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This research project was a study to determine the relationship of two characteristics--dogmatism and educational philosophy--to teachers' acceptance and understanding of the New Social Studies (NSS).

The sample consisted of 222 secondary social studies teachers from three counties in tho San Francisco Bay Area. Questionnaires were mailed to schools selected at random and were administered by an agent, in most cases, the department chairman, to all social studies teachers in the school, during a single administration period.

The questionnaire utilized four measurement scales. Troldahl and Powell's Short Form Dogmatism Scale and Curran's Short Test of One's Educational Philosophy, published and …

A Study Of Basic Philosophies Of Seminary Teachers Determined By The Ames Philosophical Belief Inventory, V. Mack Sumner Jan 1970

A Study Of Basic Philosophies Of Seminary Teachers Determined By The Ames Philosophical Belief Inventory, V. Mack Sumner

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there were differences in the basic philosophies of Seminary Teachers who were ranked highest and lowest by experienced coordinators. It also sought to determine which philosophical background was associated with the most successful teachers, and which with the least successful.

Seminary teachers of three districts were surveyed by the Ames Inventory, and each coordinator identified his ten most successful and least successful teachers. The results of the Inventory and the teacher rankings were tabulated and compared, using Chi Square analysis to determine if differences were significant.

The findings indicated …
