The context of this study is in teaching in higher education and in teaching about teaching. At its essence is an exploration of an emerging model of academic development grounded in practice. In the 21st. century, how do you create a sustainable learning environment in the context of academic development in higher education with new tools and pedagogies emerging and becoming available for use?

This study incorporates principles derived from ‘mindful technology adoption’, instructional design, technology acceptance models, and target learner needs assessments in order to determine whether or not e-learning technologies would be used by multi-organizational health administrators in their re-accreditation processes. It was initially hypothesized that these nontraditional, geographically dispersed, computer literate learners would be likely to use the elearning technologies, due to course flexibility, their full time work status, age and other variables. Results indicate that the sample had lower than expected intentions to use online learning resources, predictions that they would to use online learning resources, and plans to use …
On-Line Training For Smes: Final Report, Beth Walker, Beverley Webster, Sue Stoney
On-Line Training For Smes: Final Report, Beth Walker, Beverley Webster, Sue Stoney
Research outputs pre 2011
This research aimed to explore the appropriateness of on-line training delivery methods for small business owner/managers.
It is widely recognised that training and education are effective ways to reduce small business failure. In Australia, small business accounts for 96 percent of Australian private sector, non-agricultural businesses and they employ 47 percent of the private sector, non-agricultural workforce. Not surprisingly then, encouraging the development of the skills of the workforce has emerged as a major priority for government policy. However, what is also recognised is that many small business owner/managers (SBOs) have limited e-competencies.
Results of this research confirmed this and …

Lessons Learned And Best Practices For Using An Analytic Strategy Approach For The Creation Of Virtual Laboratories For Distance Learning In Engineering Technology, Anthony W. Dean, Carol L. Considine, Gary R. Crossman
Engineering Technology Faculty Publications
This paper describes the use of an Analytic Strategy Approach used in the development of a Virtual Automation and Controls Lab in the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program of the Engineering Technology Department at Old Dominion University. This paper looks at the three phases, as applied to the development of a virtual lab using an analytic strategy design:
(1) Formulation of the quantitative and qualitative approach to assist in decision process,
(2) Quantitative and qualitative analysis of the decision alternatives - within the decision context,
(3) Interpretation of the analysis results and implications for decision.

An Exploration Of Student Performance, Utilization, And Attitude To The Use Of A Controlled Content Sequencing Web Based Learning Environment, Justin A. Brown
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Universities, traditionally places of teaching and research, have seen and are continuing to see radical changes occur in the area of teaching and the methods of teaching delivery. The World Wide Web, or ‘Web’ has begun to subsume the classroom as the preferred means by which students access their tertiary learning materials, and ultimately, how academic staff deliver those materials. The delivery of learning via the Web takes many forms and is generically, and usually inaccurately, referred to by such names as e-learning, online learning, web-based training and web based education, using such technologies as virtual learning environments, learning management …

All For One And One For All: Designing Web-Based Courses For Students Based Upon Individual Learning Styles, Michael K. Barbour, Morris Cooze
Education Faculty Publications
As e-learning begins to proliferate into secondary schools and is opened up to learners of all abilities, it is important that the effects different learning styles have upon how online instruction is provided are taken into consideration. In this study, students from a secondary-level business education class completed a learning styles inventory to determine their strengths in the traditional learning styles and in Gardner’s intelligences. A variety of web-based instructional methods were utilized throughout the school year and the students’ overall performance in the course was monitored.

Level 3
Despite the many challenges facing educators today, as well as the array of teaching paradigms on offer, the principal goals of higher education will always remain the same: higher education plays a central role in the development of human beings and modern societies alike, as it enhances social, cultural and economic development, active citizenship and ethical values (HEA, 2003).
Globalisation of higher education, increased initiatives aiming at internationalisation, the activities of ‘so-called’ new providers and various forms of ‘borderless’ higher education, challenge the higher-education community worldwide and call for new and imaginative strategies. To successfully fulfil their educational, …

Perspectives In Learning
Accompanying the projected growth in computers, bandwidth improvements will make Internet use a more satisfying experience, leading to increased usage. It follows that faculty in higher education will explore strategies that increase student achievement and satisfaction in asynchronous teaching and learning. Use of the Internet for course and program delivery will increase. The potential of the Web as both a set of tools and a medium for course delivery offers limitless possibilities for creating innovative course design that can be more effective than some classroom experiences (Hafner & Oblinger, 1998). There is evidence that building an online community begins with …

E-Learning In Knowledge-Based Society, P.F. Tsui, K.M. Yue
International Vocational Education and Training Association (IVETA) Conference
The new training technologies can help improve the quality of the teaching and learning process, reduce training time and costs and compensate for the lack of training opportunities. One of the most prominent technologies is the development of Internet - leading to the development of e-learning. In the knowledge-based society, training stresses on individual learning and innovation to meet the restructuring of the industry. The Continuous Learning Centre (CLC) has demonstrated the success of the Internet learning and has been a pioneer in this area in Hong Kong. The experience and future development of CLC will be shared in this …
