Increasing The Social Connection Between Immigrant English Language Learners, School Staff, And Peers In The High School Setting, Gretchen Johnson Griffey Aug 2006

Increasing The Social Connection Between Immigrant English Language Learners, School Staff, And Peers In The High School Setting, Gretchen Johnson Griffey

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

An Immigrant English Language Learner (ELL) encounters many new and different experiences when they enter high school. This transition can lead to a sense of loneliness and isolation if the student is not comfortable. However, if ELLs feel welcomed, valued, and connected to others, the high school experience can be a positive one. This research project was designed to use a personal presentation learning tool as a way to establish a needed social connection between ELLs, school staff, and native speaking peers as a way to enhance personal relationships, promote cultural understanding, and connect students to their new setting.

Architecture Publications and Other Works

Based on the authors teaching experience, this essay presents an example of how the traditional design studio might be modified so as to foster democratic participation and egalitarian communication between the participating students and instructors. Open communication in the studio is seen as the key to incorporating important values such as collaboration, community and respect for the every day environment into the studio's hidden curriculum. The essay begins by discussing the potentials for and obstacles to meaningful communication in the studio. This discussion is followed by a description of a modified studio project that included continuous role-playing on the part …

Young, Fast And Dead: A Fresh Perspective From The Early Driving Group, Amanda Burrell, Tonia L. Gray

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

Risk taking behaviour is synonymous with adolescence. Moreover, epidemiological statistics associated with early driver deaths in Australia paint a disturbing picture. There is considerable debate about the effectiveness of advertising and marketing as a prophylactic to unsafe driving behaviours. This paper discusses the search for innovative approaches to road safety campaigns by accessing the perceptions of the novice driver group. A case scenario was developed by reviewing current literature on adolescent health behaviour, risk awareness, road safety and marketing communication. Initial findings from a pilot study with members of the early driving group, imply that they, as members of the …

Cross-Cultural Online Communication: Making Connections Through Project-Based Learning, Mike Keppell, Morris Jong, Harold Tsang, Susan J. Bennett, Lori Lockyer

Faculty of Education - Papers (Archive)

This paper examines a project that encourages cross-cultural communication among teachereducation students through online discussion and project-based learning. An authentic case was presented to eleven students (divided into two groups) who volunteered to participate in the project over one semester. The case focussed on the development of a website by the two groups which would provide information to local Hong Kong students visiting the University of Wollongong on an intensive English immersion programme. The students were encouraged to seek advice from their HKIEd mentor and UOW advisor via synchronous and asynchronous communication tools available in the Blackboard Learning Management System. …

A Relational Diffusion Network Study Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Internet-Based Faculty's Personal Network Exposure Models Related To Discussions About Teaching Online, Dorothy Pick Jan 2006

A Relational Diffusion Network Study Of Synchronous And Asynchronous Internet-Based Faculty's Personal Network Exposure Models Related To Discussions About Teaching Online, Dorothy Pick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

For many faculty, teaching online represents a new instructional delivery method, requiring the development of new teaching skills. This exploratory investigation builds upon Rogers' (2003) Diffusion of Innovations theory and communication channels to describe the influence of faculty discussions on their perceptions and decisions about teaching and learning. A sequential explanatory mixed-methods research design, using both sociometric and phenomenological methodologies, guided the exploration of faculty personal network exposure models and social learning opportunities. The study utilized online survey and open-ended interview instruments for the investigation. Faculty from several colleges at the University of Central Florida voluntarily completed the survey instrument …

Proprioception Of The Mind: Balancing Science And Spirit Through Emotional Intelligence, Debra Ann Fowler Jan 2006

Proprioception Of The Mind: Balancing Science And Spirit Through Emotional Intelligence, Debra Ann Fowler

MA TESOL Collection

This paper purports to demonstrate that teaching is an art form that not only relies on knowledge of theory and practice, but, even more importantly, also depends on a sensitivity to the needs of the individual student and the needs of the group. It is important for us, as teachers, to understand that in order to teach our students we need to reach them on an emotional level by implementing emotionally intelligent judgments throughout our interactions with them. It is not sufficient to be totally versed in the subject we are teaching, we must be continually aware of the emotional …

Best Practice In Online Assessment: Principles, Processes And Outcomes, Catherine E Mcloughlin, Joseph Luca Jan 2006

Best Practice In Online Assessment: Principles, Processes And Outcomes, Catherine E Mcloughlin, Joseph Luca

Research outputs pre 2011

Instead of using narrowly defined learning outcomes tested by examinations, technology offers a total environment where real life skills, such as written and verbal communication, collaboration and team work can be assessed by the team and tutor by giving learners multiple channels of expression, such as visualisation, multimedia presentations, audio and video resources. Thus, information technologies are closely inter-woven with the quality of the learning experience, and can be used to create authentic tasks for assessment. The paper presents several examples of authentic assesment utising information and communications technology.

Georgia Superintendents' Assessment Of The Six Crucial C'S, Harvey A. Franklin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The quantitative research project examined the Georgia superintendents' assessment of their use of the six crucial C's in their job performance. The research method used for the study was a qualitative analysis of data collected from eight interviews of Georgia superintendents under contract during the 2005-2006 school year.
