In recent decades, China has transformed from a relatively egalitarian society to a highly unequal one. What are the implications of high levels of inequality for the lives of children? Drawing on two newly available, nationally representative datasets, the China Family Panel Studies and the China Education Panel Survey, we develop a comprehensive portrait of childhood inequality in post-reform China. Analyses reveal stark disparities between children from different socioeconomic backgrounds in family environments and in welfare outcomes, including physical health, psychosocial health, and educational performance. This chapter provides a framework for understanding teachers as heroes, and also to draw attention to impediments of heroism that can create a villainous teacher. Universities around the world are internationalizing themselves at a higher pace than even seen before. Faculty support is recognized as critical for the success of the internationalization mission. However, faculty motivation and commitment are often taken for granted; administrators direct most of their attention to tackling partnership issues and managing the external environment. The difference in how humans read and how Automatic Essay Scoring (AES) systems process written language leads to a situation where a portion of student responses will be comprehensible to human markers, while being unable to be parsed by AES systems. This paper examines a number of pieces of student writing that were marked by trained human markers, but subsequently rejected by an AES system during the development of a scoring model for the eWrite online writing assessment that is offered by The Australian Council for Educational Research. Classroom Climate, Academic Success, And Intent To Persist Among Non-Christian And Christian Undergraduate Students, Christy M. Craft, Yang Yang

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of classroom climate held by 3,900 undergraduate non-Christian and Christian students at 1 large Midwestern university and to determine whether those perceptions influenced their academic success and intent to persist. The results suggested that Christian students held more positive perceptions of classroom climate than non-Christian students. Moreover, regardless of their perceptions of classroom climate, Christian students were more academically successful and had higher intentions to persist than non-Christian students. For all of the students in the study, positive perceptions of classroom climate advantageously impacted academic success and intent to persist.

According to the 2016 National Survey of Children’s Health, more than 46% of children across the U.S. have experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience or ACE.  Adverse Childhood Experiences can have detrimental, long-term effects on a child’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development. Becoming a trauma-informed school can change the negative outcomes for those students who have been impacted by traumatic events. The focus of this literature review will explore trauma-informed practices and frameworks currently being used in schools across the U.S.; and the benefits of using positive education paradigms that incorporate trauma-informed care within the educational setting.

This presentation will share the results of two pilot studies using Circles. Circles give people an opportunity to speak and listen to one another in an atmosphere of safety and equality. Circles were used to build and strengthen relationships as well as deliver academic content and increase social/emotional learning principles. One pilot study focused on infusing children’s literature into Circle lessons in a 3rd grade classroom and the second pilot study targeted academic motivation and lack of connectedness for high school students in 9th and 11th grade.

We describe and analyze our efforts to support Learning Assistants (LAs)—undergraduate peer
educators who simultaneously take a 3-credit pedagogy course—in fostering equitable team
dynamics and collaboration within a project-based engineering design course. Tonso and
others have shown that (a) inequities can “live” in mundane interactions such as those among
students within design teams and (b) those inequities both reflect and (re)produce broader

Certain parenting styles help children develop self-regulated learning and encourage them to exert control over their own learning. Research on the experiences of college students with disabilities and the extent to which student affairs practitioners and scholars are meeting their needs is sparse. This article advances the concept of Universal Research Design (URD) by discussing the application of universal design principles to research on college students. This paper outlines efforts to teach critical thinking skills for students and reduce grading time. Faculty in
the educational interpreting program stopped providing direct feedback on their interpreted work and
implemented a self-assessment only system of assessment. As part of this process students were taught and
then graded on the efficacy of their self-assessment of their own interpreting work. This has fundamentally
altered program and course assessments and reduced the amount of time it takes for grading and
