Impact Report 2017: Imsa30, The Promise And Power Of Imsa, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy
Impact Reports
The State of Illinois launched the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA), which is recognized as the world's leading teaching and learning lab for imagination and inquiry, in collaboration with business, education, and science leaders. For 30 years, IMSA has pioneered the future of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education through its two legislative charges: 1) to provide a uniquely challenging education for students talented in the areas of mathematics and science and 2) to stimulate further excellence for all Illinois schools in mathematics and science. IMSA champions these goals through:

“Living The Imsa Values: Respecting Our Cultural Differences” : Remarks To All School Assembly, José M. Torres
Keynotes, Speeches, and Lectures
Last September, during Labor Day weekend, I took my 6-year old grandson, Malachi bowling. Of course, we had to have the bumpers up against the railing, which helped me immensely with my own gutter balls. During one of the games, when Malachi threw his ball it got kind of stuck between our lane and the one next to ours. The ball was almost at the other lane when I instantaneously dashed toward the ball. I didn’t realize, or had forgotten, that the lanes are greased and very slippery. Upon crossing the line, I immediately went up about 3 feet in …

Personal Reflections
Today, the campus is growing eerily quiet as many IMSA students go "home" to their families for the winter break after completing final exams and the fall semester. I place "home" in quotations since recently I have been reminded by some of our alums that this "bunker" in Aurora becomes "home" to many students during their brief three-year stay.
I could have placed "family" in quotations, too, as we often refer to IMSA as a "family." And IMSA is a "family" and a "home" to many of us, both students and adults. We spend more "awake" time with our "family" …

Personal Reflections
Happy (belated) New Year! I appreciate that many of you share with me that you read and enjoy these personal reflections. I want to reiterate that these are my “personal” reflections. At times, it’s difficult to judge how much of my heart I want to open up via this medium and the level of risk that I can take in “reflecting” on what is occurring at IMSA and beyond. However, today I want to lean toward sharing more than I “ought to” in the spirit of communicating with “family.”
At the National level, President Trump in 2017 has created a …

The Racial Identity Conflict: Diverse Perspectives On The Minimization Of The Stem Education Gap That Impacts Gifted And Talented Black Male Students!, Adrienne Coleman
Publications & Research
Research suggests that a cognitive gap begins as early as nine months of age in Black males, widens by two years of age, and by fifth grade cognition lags by nearly two full years (ETS, 2011). This gap is a result of multiple facets: “Children are suffering from a toxic cocktail of poverty, illiteracy, racial discrimination and massive incarceration that sentences poor boys to dead-end hopeless lives” (ETS, 2011, p. 2). The outcome is the Black male being inadequately educated and academically behind other subcultures of the population. Lack of family support, poor school systems with inadequate resources, peer pressure, …

Diversifying The Stem Education To Career Pipeline, Adrienne Coleman
Publications & Research
This webinar will provide participants with the results of the Diversifying STEM Think Tank and provide strategies to enhance diversity in the STEM Education to Career Pipeline. It will further focus on the motivation of Black and Latino students to engage in STEM. With an understanding of strategies to diversify, matriculation to higher education may improve, STEM engagement may be enhanced, and visibility in STEM careers may increase. Diversifying the STEM fields may indirectly impact the socioeconomic status of these communities with opportunities to increase their earning potential, have more consistent employment, and obtain leadership positions; while enhancing the industry …

When I was accepted to present at the International Student Science Fair, I was honored to represent the United States and the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy at such a prestigious competition. However, I never truly grasped how unique and transformative this experience would be until I arrived.

My weeklong journey in Busan came with disbelief: five-star service, global networking, and a warm, fun-loving tour guide I’ll never forget, Kiwook Hwang. On the night I arrived, I was missing a towel, a poster, and a warm meal, but the Korean Science Academy took care of me and assured I had everything I needed and more (e.g. snacks, cold water bottles, Wi Fi) to live comfortably for the next-week.
