From The Aasl Standards To The Acrl Framework: Higher Education Shifts In Pedagogical Strategies, Jenni Burke
From The Aasl Standards To The Acrl Framework: Higher Education Shifts In Pedagogical Strategies, Jenni Burke
Scholarship and Professional Work
How does the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education function in relation to the information literacy standards used with students in K-12 schools and how does it inform academic librarians’ pedagogical strategies? While these documents are strongly related, there are large differences in their theoretical approach to information literacy, which are revealed in their definitions, treatment of dispositions, and approach to measurement. This leaves gaps in instructional approaches and student learning. Understanding these differences enables librarians in higher education to leverage the Framework to teach all students and fill in instructional gaps, regardless of how much information literacy instruction …
The Higher Purpose Of Higher Education Is Real, Aldemaro Romero Jr.
The Higher Purpose Of Higher Education Is Real, Aldemaro Romero Jr.

In the last few months we have witnessed a number of political debates that have become part of the national discussion on issues such as healthcare, immigration, infrastructure, freedom of speech, the media and truth itself. What is the connection between these topics and higher education? It is much more obvious than you might think.
National progress – economic, social and individual – depends on winning these debates. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, large parts of the nation’s transportation system, as well as the public higher education system, have all been heavily funded by the federal government through taxation. The rationale …

Colleges Need To Prepare For Generation Alpha., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
The 19th century American theologian and
author James Freeman Clarke is credited with
coining the phrase, “A politician thinks of the
next election. A statesman, of the next generation.”
Although higher education in this country
is currently embattled on many fronts, that should
not distract us from looking years ahead to figure
out how we can prepare for new generations of
students.
One of those upcoming generations has been
labeled “Generation Alpha,” a term crafted by
Mark McCrindle, an Australian social researcher,
demographer and futurist. Unlike “Generation Z,”
born in the mid 1990s and who are today’s college
students, generation …

In 1943, the U.S. War Department produced a 17-minute educational short titled “Don’t Be a Sucker.” The film portrays the rise of Nazism in Germany and alerts Americans against repeating the mistakes of intolerance made by the Nazis. It stresses that Americans will lose their country if they let themselves be turned into "suckers" by fanaticism and hatred. The film was produced to make the case for the desegregation of the United States armed forces by revealing the connection between prejudice and fascism.
The film became “viral” on YouTube after the events at Charlottesville, Va., because it teaches how to …

In 1982, seven people died in the Chicago metro- politan area after ingesting Extra Strength Tylenol that had been deliberately contaminated with potas- sium cyanide. Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer, responded by pulling 31 million bottles of tablets back from retailers, stopped all production and advertising of the product, got involved with the Chicago Police, FBI, and FDA in the search for the killer, and offered up to a $100,000 reward for information on the culprit, all while permanently discontinuing the capsules and developing tamper-resistant “gel caps.”
The crisis cost the company more than $100 million, but Tylenol eventually regained …
The Influence Of Mentorship And Role Models On University Women Leaders’ Career Paths To University Presidency, Lilian H. Hill, Celeste A. Wheat
The Influence Of Mentorship And Role Models On University Women Leaders’ Career Paths To University Presidency, Lilian H. Hill, Celeste A. Wheat
The Qualitative Report
While the literature concerning female administrators in higher education indicates the critical role that mentors and role models play in contributing to women’s professional advancement, the relationship between mentorship and women’s attainment of senior leadership positions including the college presidency remain underexplored. The purpose of this study was to explore how women in key-line administrative positions to the presidency (e.g., academic dean, vice president, chief academic officer) and women presidents understood the role of mentoring relationships and role models in their career paths to leadership. This study employed a postmodern feminist theoretical framework and a feminist qualitative design to give …
International Student Enrollment Trends From 2008-2014: Country Case Studies And Comparison To A Midwest Liberal Arts Institution, Emin Hajiyev
Dissertations
The international student recruitment and overall cross-border education have constantly been evolving. In the past two decades, higher education institutions were developing and implementing their plan of campus internationalization. Various universities and colleges have different approaches to the internationalization. However, through the implementation of the process, most of the institutions realized that the cornerstone of the internationalization is the international student recruitment. Despite providing the financial health to the institutions and overall to the process of internationalization, international student recruitment is the provider of the campus multiculturalism and diversity. This research is concentrated on the external factors of the cross-border …

Exploring The Impact Of Undergraduate Intramural Sports On Undergraduate Students’ Perceived Sense Of Community: A Multiple Regression Analysis, Nathan Penland
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Research has shown benefits to the student experience for college students when they participate in intramural sports on university campuses. These benefits include improved physical and social health as well as academic performance. This non-experimental, predictive correlational study sought to understand if a relationship exists between the predictive variables of length and frequency in intramural sports and sense of community as the criterion outcome with undergraduate students on private liberal arts campuses. Participants were undergraduate students from two institutions of similar size, and sense of community was measured by Chavis, Lee, and Acosta’s (2008) Sense of Community Index 2 (SCI-2) …

Politicians and many in the general public ask, “Why do university faculty need tenure?” One could give many reasons based on history or philosophy. But sometimes examples prove the most powerful explanations.
Two weeks ago, on July 18, one of the world’s academic heroes passed away. His name is not familiar to most, but thanks to his work we live in a healthier world. His name was Herbert Needleman. Born on Dec. 13, 1927, in Philadelphia, he came from a Jewish family of modest means. His father sold furniture, and his mother, whose family owned a pickle business, ran the …
Indigenous Student Retention In Arctic Higher Education, Evan Brown
Indigenous Student Retention In Arctic Higher Education, Evan Brown
All Capstone Projects
The primary focus of this capstone research is to identify the process of indigenous student retention policy in Arctic higher education institutions and compare these practices to existing retention and social theory. Much of the dominant literature on student retention addresses Euro-centric models, not fully addressing persistence issues with subjugated groups. There is a gap in the research with regard to indigenous Arctic student retention. By conducting a case study, data was gathered via the utilization of a variety of tools including archival records, interviews, direct observations, and document reviews. By adding to the body of work regarding student retention, …
Race, Gender Play Role In College Graduations, Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Race, Gender Play Role In College Graduations, Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
One of the best ways to measure the accomplishment of colleges and universities is by assessing the percentage of their undergraduate students who graduate within six years of enrollment. Although most undergraduate degrees are designed to be completed in four years, the norm is to count grad- uation rates in six-year intervals because many students have to work (many of them full-time), while others do not have the adequate preparation from high school to succeed and need more time to overcome their academic shortcomings. There are many factors that can delay time to graduation.
Many states tie funding for their …
The Relationship Between Federal Citizenship And Immigration Policies And The Internationalization Of Higher Education In Canada, Rashed Al-Haque
The Relationship Between Federal Citizenship And Immigration Policies And The Internationalization Of Higher Education In Canada, Rashed Al-Haque
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Using Actor-Network Theory (ANT) as a way to do Critical Policy Analysis (CPA), this instrumental case study explores the relationships between citizenship and immigration (CI) policies and the internationalization of Canadian higher education. By utilizing a critical-sociomaterial approach, the research exposes actors and actor-networks that are otherwise overlooked in these policy areas. Moreover, this lens underscores the impacts and consequences of policy and how the enrollment and/or exclusion of actors in actor-networks enables certain actors to exert control, power, and primacy over others.
While most research on internationalization identifies the academy as the site for internationalization policy enactment, this research …

Higher Ed Opinions Divided Along Party Lines., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Until recently, higher education commanded a good standing in public opinion polls. According to a 2013 Gallup-Lumina Foundation survey, 72 percent of people in the U.S. thought that to have a college degree was “very important,” and 25 percent thought it was “somewhat important.”
However, that good image has been eroding rapidly. According to the results of a 2016 survey funded by the Kresge Foundation, Americans are increasingly uncertain about the necessity of college for success in the workforce. When asked the question, "Do you think that a college education is necessary for a person to be suc- cessful in …

College Enrollments Continue National Decline., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
If there is a statistic that all college administrators look at every year it is enrollments, the bread and butter of higher education for multiple reasons. First, all private colleges – and increasingly public ones – depend upon students enrolling in order to main- tain the financial flow to their institutions. Second, many public institutions have their state budget tied to the number of students they enroll. Third, the attractiveness of an institution of higher education is partly based on its enrollment success. No wonder everybody looks at those numbers every year with apprehension.
Enrollment numbers for the spring semester …

Private Universities And Development Of Higher Education In Nigeria: A Mixed Methods Approach, Yusuf Suleiman, Zahyah Binti Hanafi, Muhajir Taslikhan
The Qualitative Report
Private university education is unarguably one of the growing trends in the education system in the world. Providing university education to citizens should not be the solitary efforts of government, but should be the responsibility of adults at all levels. The giant stride of private investment in the acceleration of university education in Nigeria is overwhelming. This paper examines the private university's contribution to the development of university education in Nigeria, focusing on the strengths, weaknesses and way forward. Basically, the purpose of the study is to highlight the areas where private universities had contributed to the advancement of university …

The Marketing Concept And Byod In The University Classroom:, Dennis Bristow, David Titus, Garth Harris, Rajesh Gulati
Atlantic Marketing Journal
For decades marketing educators have espoused the marketing concept and consumer oriented business strategies in university classrooms. In recent years, there has been a movement away from the ‘sage on the stage’ to experiential, active learning pedagogies. Those newer pedagogies often involve the use of mobile devices, including smart phones, laptops, and e-readers as academic tools for students. While such mobile devices are nearly ubiquitous on college and university campuses, an ongoing debate revolves on the distinction between owning mobile devices and whether or not students bring them to campus and use them as educational tools. In this study, we …

Best Practices For Recruiting And Retaining Diverse Faculty For Institutions Of Higher Education., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
Research has shown that increasing diversity in organizations and the workplace is not only a matter of social justice. It suggests that including diverse voices and experiences makes groups more knowledgeable, sensitive, efficient, creative, and successful. Examples cited claim that increased diversity (in its broadest sense, i.e., gender, ethnicity, national origin, age, sexual orientation, disability, religious and socioeconomic background) affords groups rich opportunities to respond more effectively to the challenges of society that require multiple perspectives and broad approaches to complex problem-solving. Unfortunately, among the faculty represented in higher education, diversity remains an issue. And, the proportion of diverse individuals …

College Staff Continue To Be Unsung Heroes., Aldemaro Romero Jr.
Publications and Research
For many of us in higher education, the staff that work at colleges and universities are unsung heroes. After all, most faculty are protected by tenure and academic freedom. Administrators also have a great deal of autonomy and job security. Yet, staff members –whether a department secretary or someone working out of the sight of most people – are usually badly paid, lack many opportunities for advancement and can oftentimes be dismissed rather easily.
Faculty, administrators, and students are all part of the public consciousness, but little is known about staff. Now a new report is shedding some light about …

Informal Order, Needs Analysis, And The Eap Curriculum, Faisal S. Al-Maamari
The Qualitative Report
The academic curriculum is developed through a systematic process whereby content is created through the alignment of needs to stakeholder or target group. This qualitative research study features a small-scale, English for academic purpose (EAP) needs analysis (NA) of three credit-bearing EAP programs and the corresponding departmental programs conducted at a Language Center at a higher education institution in Oman. Based on interview, observational and documentary data, the analysis showed divergences in academic literacy (writing and reading) between the EAP and content programs. Principally, the findings pointed to the presence and operation of a group of informal orders and the …

One of the most contentious issues in politics in general – and in higher education in particular – is political correctness.
Usually defined as the avoidance of language or actions that are seen as excluding, marginalizing, or insulting groups of people that have been dis- criminated against because of their gender, race, or other identifying factors.
The term is now oftentimes used in a pejorative sense, particularly in conservative circles.

An Evaluation Of The Effects Of The Search For Education, Elevation, And Knowledge (Seek) Program On Short- And Intermediate-Term Outcomes, Raymond Galinski
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) program is an educational opportunity program within the City University of New York designed to provide economically and academically disadvantaged students, who otherwise would not have such access, the opportunity to attend college and to succeed once enrolled. However, despite being in existence for a half-century, surprisingly little is known about how the SEEK program contributes to student achievement and success. This study was the first to empirically measure the short- and intermediate-term impacts of this program on student outcomes.
Using propensity scores to match SEEK students to similar non-SEEK students to …

Smartphone usage by students has increased rapidly over the last number of years, and there is evidence to indicate that students are using their smartphones more in higher educational environments.
However, creating mobile applications tailored to the needs of any particular cohort of students can be an expensive and time-consuming endeavour for any organisation. In addition, it normally involves substantial technological expertise.
At the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), we created two bespoke mobile applications tailored to improve the orientation experience for two different groups of students. “DIT GetSmart!” was designed and built to address the information needs of …

Beyond Bathrooms: Exploring The Negative Impact Of Hostile Campus Climates On Queer Students, Deaglan An
Global Honors Theses
Anti-Queer violence is a form of systemic oppression that exists on a global level. This paper focuses on anti-Queer violence in higher education, how hostile campus climates impact Queer students, and what communities can do to reduce anti-Queer violence at their institutions. Queer students who deal with hostile campus climates, experience anti-Queer violence from their fellow students, staff and faculty, and their institutions. Students who experience anti-Queer violence can experience emotional distress. This emotional distress can result in students preforming poorly academically, silencing their Queer identities to feel safer on campus, and can result in students leaving their academic institutions. …

The proposed 2018 budget by the Trump administration has been presented and now we have a clear picture of the list of programs related to higher education that will be either severely cut or totally eliminated.
Among the programs to be eliminated are the Public-Service Loan-Forgiveness program (which currently helps more than 550,000 students), Stafford Loans (offered to eligible students enrolled in accredited American institutions of higher education to help with their education) and the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (a federal assistance grant for college students with the greatest need for financial aid). Since the first Nobel Prize was awarded in 1901, 860 individuals from 76 countries have won it. Of these, 363 have been from the United States. More Nobel Prize winners have been American than any other nationality.
And of the 363 American awardees, 98 were born in other countries. Of the six Americans awarded Nobel Prizes last year in …
