In 2011 the University of Iowa Libraries began crowdsourcing the digital transcription of its manuscript archives. Four years and over 50,000 transcribed pages later, that project, known as DIY History, has garnered considerable internet attention via Buzzfeed, Twitter, Tumblr, and the NBC News blog. At the same time, it has been threaded into undergraduate classrooms at Iowa as a means of introducing students to primary source research, information literacy, and multimodal design. Matt Gilchrist and Tom Keegan will discuss how faculty members and librarians collaborated on an assignment that emphasizes course objectives while strengthening student connections to the UI Libraries. …

Social Media And The Good Life: Do They Connect?, Mark Herring Jul 2015

Social Media And The Good Life: Do They Connect?, Mark Herring

Mark Y. Herring

Social media have accelerated communication, expanded business horizons and connected millions of individuals who otherwise would never have met. But not everything social media touch turns to gold—much of it is brass. Social networking sites are used by scammers, criminals and sexual predators, and many people now self-diagnose illness based on misinformation shared online. Businesses make great claims about social media as a marketing tool but few show any real returns. We communicate through social media but are we really saying anything? Is social media doomed to be a conduit of narcissism or can it become a channel for responsible …

Bridging The Distances: Women Writers Exploring The Nightmare Of Vietnam, Christina Triezenberg Jul 2015

Bridging The Distances: Women Writers Exploring The Nightmare Of Vietnam, Christina Triezenberg

Christina Triezenberg

This essay seeks to challenge the now-common practice of excluding Vietnam-era antiwar verse from contemporary literary anthologies by exploring the works produced by professional and amateur female poets who, in many cases, had witnessed the war firsthand and reflected on their experiences in verse that depicts the often harsh realities of this still-contested conflict. By exploring poetry written by women who served in a variety of capacities during the war, this essay underscores the repeated attempts made by women writers to bridge the distances between the home front and the battlefront and offers a compelling argument about the importance of …

Damunwha Students’ Funds Of Knowledge In English: A Qualitative Case Study In The South Korean Context, Miso Kim, Tae-Young Kim

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

This study explores the interface between multicultural, or Damunwha, students’ households and English learning in the Korean context. Korea is a relatively homogeneous nation in terms of its ethnic and cultural diversity. In this context, students whose parent(s) are not Korean are labeled as Damunwha students. Despite their minority position, the students have accumulated multilingual and multicultural funds of knowledge, the experience and culture unique to their households. Their use of funds of knowledge in English learning was analyzed from an ecological perspective, which emphasizes learners’ active agency in learning. Two junior-high school students from international marriage families and two …

Forum Introduction: Writing The Global Family: International Perspectives On Disability Studies And Family Narratives, Janet Sauer, Philip Ferguson Jun 2015

Forum Introduction: Writing The Global Family: International Perspectives On Disability Studies And Family Narratives, Janet Sauer, Philip Ferguson

Philip M. Ferguson

"We live in the Golden Age of the memoir. Everyone has a story to tell, and a growing number are finding their way to publication. The disability memoir has certainly been a part of this growth. It is refreshing to note how many of these recent narrative accounts of living with a disability have been written from what might be broadly termed a "disability studies perspective" taking on a more critical, socio-cultural orientation than the traditional 'inspiration in the face of personal tragedy' motif."

Creating The Back Ward: The Triumph Of Custodialism And The Uses Of Therapeutic Failure In Nineteenth Century Idiot Asylums, Philip M. Ferguson Jun 2015

Creating The Back Ward: The Triumph Of Custodialism And The Uses Of Therapeutic Failure In Nineteenth Century Idiot Asylums, Philip M. Ferguson

Philip M. Ferguson

"My focus in this chapter is on the origin of the back ward rather than its demise. Where did the “back wards” that [Burton] Blatt and [Senator Robert] Kennedy witnessed come from in the first place? What 3 exactly were those “antecedents of the problems observed” that Blatt cited? This chapter reviews that history and argues that, in fact, there is a specific narrative to the evolution of the institutional “back ward” as an identifiable place where people with the most significant intellectual disabilities were to be incarcerated and largely forgotten."

The Vote On Bilingual Education And Latino Identity In Massachusetts, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce Jun 2015

The Vote On Bilingual Education And Latino Identity In Massachusetts, Jorge Capetillo-Ponce

Jorge Capetillo-Ponce

In November 2002, the Massachusetts electorate voted overwhelmingly to pass Referendum Ballot Question 2 (Q. 2), sponsored by California millionaire Ron Unz. The passage of this initiative by close to 70% of the voters effectively ended bilingual education in the state as it had been known for thirty years. Exit polling done at selected cities in Massachusetts by the Mauricio Gaston Institute and UMass Poll revealed, however, that out of a total 1,491 Latinos polled, a vast majority of them, around 93%, had voted in favor of rejecting Q. 2 and keeping bilingual education in place. Indeed, Q. 2 became …

The Beginning Of Digital Wisdom, Michael J. Paulus Jr., Ryan Ingersoll Jun 2015

The Beginning Of Digital Wisdom, Michael J. Paulus Jr., Ryan Ingersoll

Ryan Ingersoll

Marc Prensky, who popularized the term “digital natives” more than ten years ago, now emphasizes the need for “digital wisdom”: using digital technologies wisely to become wiser. Recent research reveals that so-called digital natives are often “digital naïves”—familiarity with digital technologies does not translate into facility with them. Incoming college students report declining confidence in their computer skills and report very modest improvements by the time they graduate. Employers report deficiencies in the technological skills of college graduates and, perhaps most troubling, studies of youth and young adults show that ethical and moral reasoning does not extend much beyond self-protection. …

The Effect Of Parents' Child-Rearing Attitudes On High School Students' English Learning Motivation And Achievement, Eun-Kyung Park, Tae-Young Kim May 2015

The Effect Of Parents' Child-Rearing Attitudes On High School Students' English Learning Motivation And Achievement, Eun-Kyung Park, Tae-Young Kim

Dr. Tae-Young Kim (김태영, 金兌英)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of parents’ four-types of child-rearing attitudes (i.e., acceptance, rejection, autonomy, control) on Korean high school student's English-learning motivation and their English achievement. A total of 250 high school students participated in this survey study. The results indicated that father’s child-rearing attitudes made significant differences in high school students’ four types of English-learning motivation (i.e., intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, ideal L2 selves, and ought-to L2 selves). However, mother’s child-rearing attitudes did not bear any statistical differences among the four types of English-learning motivation. Second, both father’s and mother’s child-rearing attitudes made …
