Are Teacher Education Programs Failing The Nation’S Urban Schools? A Closer Look At Pre-Service Teachers’ Beliefs About Working With Inner-City Students, Servet Celik

Servet Celik

To address the issue of pre-service teachers being under-prepared for work in multicultural and impoverished environments in America’s urban schools, teacher education programs have taken steps to improve diversity-oriented curricula and provide relevant fieldwork experience. However, research indicates that a large proportion of teacher candidates still do not have the necessary skills to deal with students from divergent upbringings. This interpretive study investigated the beliefs of pre-service teachers about urban students and how well their teacher education programs are addressing the issues of working in inner-city schools. The results revealed that, although some progress has been made, a significant gap …

Comments On Deecd Discussion Paper: New Directions For School Leadership And The Teaching Profession, June 2012, Lawrence C. Ingvarson Sep 2012

Comments On Deecd Discussion Paper: New Directions For School Leadership And The Teaching Profession, June 2012, Lawrence C. Ingvarson

Dr Lawrence Ingvarson (Consultant)

The Discussion Paper identifies three fronts on which the Victorian Government will take action over the next ten years. Action 1: Attract great people into teaching: attract stronger candidates and improve their preparation. Action 2: Create a high performance profession: stimulate a culture of excellence and effective professional development. Action 3: Provide strong direction and support: elevate the role of leadership at school and system levels. As a general observation, each of these areas for action is important. The diagnosis of areas requiring action is accurate. However, the prescription is weak in some areas and needs to be strengthened.

Standards For Graduation And Initial Teacher Certification: The International Experience, Lawrence C. Ingvarson

Dr Lawrence Ingvarson (Consultant)

The focus of this report is on policies and practices for assuring the quality of teacher education programs and of teachers who graduate from those programs. International interest in policies that promote teacher quality has increased markedly in recent years (OECD, 2005). With mounting evidence that the most important in school influence on student achievement, is teachers’ knowledge and skill (e.g., Hattie, 2008; Hanushek, 2004) policymakers have been giving closer attention to strategies that will recruit, prepare and retain the best possible teachers. These strategies call for clear and valid descriptions of what good teachers know and do, which teaching …

Robert L. Rubenstein

This study reports the findings of an electronic exploratory survey of National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Student Representatives. The purpose of the survey was to gather information about the perspective of graduate students concerning problematic peers and their experiences with them in school psychology training programs. Findings suggest that (a) students are unsure whether or not their training programs have an official procedure in place for dealing with problematic students; (b) the problems they observe most commonly involve poor interpersonal skills; (c) consistent with other mental health programs, school psychology graduate students most often talk with their peers or …
