Expanding The Database Curriculum, Meg Murray, Mario Guimaraes Jan 2008

Expanding The Database Curriculum, Meg Murray, Mario Guimaraes

Faculty and Research Publications

As database concepts and technologies continue to evolve there exists a need to expand the topics included in database curricula. This is challenging given the restraints on the number of courses that can be included in a typical CS or IS program. While a set of commonly identified core concepts and principles exists, there is little consensus on what supplemental materials should be included in database courses. Happy 10th birthday to the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration! Who would have ever imagined that this online journal situated on the Web site of a smaller university in Carrollton, Georgia, U.S.A., (population about 20,000 and listed in 2002 as one of the 50 best small southern towns in the United States), and without the financial backing of a large national association, would emerge 10 years later as one of the field's premier journals? Not even the founding editor, Dr. Melanie Clay, quite envisioned the number of contributors and readers who would seek out her journal from all over …

The Impact Of Parental Involvement On Educational Outcomes: An Integrative Review, Doris A. White Jan 2008

The Impact Of Parental Involvement On Educational Outcomes: An Integrative Review, Doris A. White

MERC Publications

The efficacy of parental involvement in schools is usually taken for granted, but the issue is so complex that a single study cannot reasonably measure the effectiveness of parental involvement and its influence on educational outcomes. This review of literature examines several propositions regarding the influence of parental involvement on educational outcomes by synthesizing the findings of using the tools of meta-analysis, literature synthesis, evaluation synthesis, vote-counting, and best-evidence synthesis. Each of these methods combines results of a large number of studies to determine aggregated results of relevant existing studies. Meta-analysis reviews quantitative studies to provide statistical indicators of aggregate …
