Preservice Teachers' Procedural And Conceptual Understanding Of Fractions And The Effects Of Inquiry-Based Learning On This Understanding, Hope Marchionda

All Dissertations

ABSTRACT Non-negative rational numbers play a major role in the K-8 curriculum and continue to permeate mathematics content through high school and college in all strands of mathematics. The difficulty that both students and teachers encounter with these concepts is well documented in the literature. This study looked at preservice teacher knowledge and how an alternative means of instruction might improve their conceptual understanding of fractions. To accomplish this task, the study took place in two stages over the course of two semesters. During the first stage, preservice teachers' conceptual and procedural knowledge of fractions and their associated algorithms were …

Financial Analysis And Fiscal Viability Of Secondary Schools In Mukono District, Uganda, Janet Jeffery Tanner Dec 2006

Financial Analysis And Fiscal Viability Of Secondary Schools In Mukono District, Uganda, Janet Jeffery Tanner

Theses and Dissertations

Within the worldwide business community, many analysis tools and techniques have evolved to assist in the evaluation and encouragement of financial health and fiscal viability. However, in the educational community, such analysis is uncommon. It has long been argued that educational institutions bear little resemblance to, and should not be treated like, businesses. This research identifies an educational environment where educational institutions are, indeed, businesses, and may greatly benefit from the use of business analyses. The worldwide effort of Education for All (EFA) has focused on primary education, particularly in less developed countries (LDCs). In Sub-Saharan Africa, Uganda increased its …

Addendum A: Wisherd And Emeriti Funds: Definition Of Terms And Explanation Of Allowable Use Of These Funds, Jason D. Kennedy

UNL Emeriti Association Board: Meeting Minutes

Book value is the historical cost basis of the endowment (or investment) whereas market value is what the endowment is worth right now. Basically, book value is what went into the endowment and market value is what you would get if you sold it now. Because this is a permanent endowment, only the income can be spent. The income is the spendable account. The estimated annual income is the amount the fund can expect to earn over the next year if no new contributions are made to the account. It is the endowment thatis earning income and the earnings are …

UNL Emeriti Association Board: Meeting Minutes

Emeritus status is the rank awarded by the Board of Regents to an employee at the time of retirement in recognition of substantial service rendered to the University in teaching, research, extension, or administration in a professional field. It may also be awarded to a retired administrator whose work impinges directly on the educational program.

For faculty the recommendation is initiated by a vote of the departmental faculty with the endorsement of the chair and dean. In the case of A-line administrators, the recommendation is made by that individual's immediate supervisor. Consistent with Regents policy, eligibility for emeritus status includes …

Roots & Routes: A Re-Imagining Of Refugee Identity Constructions And The Implications For Schooling, Jacqueline Mosselson Dec 2006

Roots & Routes: A Re-Imagining Of Refugee Identity Constructions And The Implications For Schooling, Jacqueline Mosselson

Jacqueline Mosselson

The ways in which refugees are assumed to adapt to United States society have serious consequences on their enjoyment and fulfillment in their schooling experiences. This is further compounded by the incorporation of refugees under a more general umbrella of "immigrant" studies. Here, excerpts are shared from an experiential study of fifteen adolescent Bosnian female refugees in New York City schools to articulate an alternative identity paradigm, roots & routes, which captures the ways in which refugees consciously balance their ethnic and new national identities in understanding themselves, their lives, and how they represent themselves to others. This paradigm enables …
