Neoliberalism, The Technological Sublime, And Techniques Of The Self, David Shutkin Feb 2005

Neoliberalism, The Technological Sublime, And Techniques Of The Self, David Shutkin

David S. Shutkin

Part of a special section on cultural studies in instructional design. The writer considers the courses that he teaches as an educational technologist and teacher educator in relation to the deployment of a governmental discourse on neoliberalism. He considers educational technology and neoliberalism; the American technological sublime, which conflates technological invention with progress and imbues certain technologies with moral values; neoliberalism as a form of governmental rationality; neoliberalism, freedom, and educational technology; and the Society for Technology in Education's National Educational Technology Standards project, which reflects the emergence of neoliberalism and the standards movement in education in the 1980s.

'I Can Never Turn My Back On That': Liminality And The Impact Of Class On Service0learning Experience, Sue Ellen Henry Dec 2004

'I Can Never Turn My Back On That': Liminality And The Impact Of Class On Service0learning Experience, Sue Ellen Henry

Sue Ellen Henry

Service-learning is often framed as a pedagogical perspective and instructional tool that can help “privileged” students gain greater insight into the life experience and perspectives of “others,” namely those “served” in the service-learning arrangement. Central to this positive conception of service-learning is a binary between “privileged server” and “underprivileged recipient” or an “us/them” dichotomy. Recently, this dichotomy has been questioned by some researchers as problematic to a transformative understanding of service-learning (Hourigan 1998; Flower 2002; Novek 2000).

Central to the critique of the binary of “server/served” is its overly simplistic approach to understanding those involved in the service-learning relationship. Rather …

Unequal Access To University Places : Revisiting Entry To Tertiary Education In Victoria, Daniel Edwards, Bob Birrell, T Smith Dec 2004

Unequal Access To University Places : Revisiting Entry To Tertiary Education In Victoria, Daniel Edwards, Bob Birrell, T Smith

Dr Daniel Edwards

Access to university is becoming increasingly important as a determinant of occupational outcomes for young people. If there is to be genuine educational opportunity, then all young people in Victoria with the requisite talent should have an equal chance to compete for a university place. The findings of this report show that this is not the case currently. This report explores changes in the outcomes of Victorian Year 12 completers between 1993 and 2003. It is based on unpublished tertiary applicant data for all Victorian Year 12 VTAC applicants. The findings show that there has been a growing divergence in …

The Effect Of Test-Taker Gender, Audience And Topic On Task Performance In Tape-Mediated Assessment Of Speaking., Tom Lumley, Barry O'Sullivan Dec 2004

The Effect Of Test-Taker Gender, Audience And Topic On Task Performance In Tape-Mediated Assessment Of Speaking., Tom Lumley, Barry O'Sullivan

Dr Tom Lumley

Performance in tests of spoken language can be influenced by a wide range of features of both task and participants. This article hypothesises that there may be effects on performance attributable to an interaction of variables such as the task topic, the gender of the person presenting the topic and the gender of the candidate. In contrast to previous studies, which have examined speaking tests involving face-to-face interaction, this study considered the issue in a tape-mediated test delivered in a language laboratory, with no interlocutor present, but where stimulus material is presented by one or more speakers, one of whom …

Reliability As A Measurement Design Effect, Ray Adams Dec 2004

Reliability As A Measurement Design Effect, Ray Adams

Prof Ray Adams

Test reliability is a concept central to classical test theory and it is commonly stated as a requirement that a test attain a certain level of reliability before it be considered of sufficient quality for practical use. This article discusses the role of reliability in item response theory, and in particular the role of reliability in contexts where matrix sampling designs are used and concern is with the estimation of population parameters rather than the measurement of individuals. The concept of a measurement design effect is introduced. This concept parallels the concept of sampling design effects, in that it describes …
