One would think that after winning 50 games and two regular season conference crowns during the last two seasons, the University of Maine women’s basketball team would be ready for a break. Maybe the team would be content to look back at past achievements.

Perhaps the Black Bears need a rest after a successful campaign in which they won the America East Conference crown and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Or possibly, Maine might think its goals and expectations are lowered after losing two-time America East Player of the Year Heather Ernest.

The University of Maine men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are prepared to continue the improvements made last season in the 2004-2005 season. Head Coach Jeff Wren begins his 34th overall season at Maine and is joined by assistant coach Susan Lizzotte and diving coach Jaret Lizzotte. Though the team lost some of its top competitors to graduation, the Black Bears will seek to build on a core group of talented and experienced returners, with the addition of a strong group of first-year swimmers and divers, to battle some tough America East opponents.

This year's concert includes the American premier of a suite for piano by Erich Zeisl, a powerful neo-romantic sonata for cello & piano by Karl Weigl, two Walt Whitman settings by Franz Schreker and the world premier performance of a work by Paul Ben-Haim composed prior to his flight from Nazi Germany.

A long time in the making, the Women’s Hockey East Association proudly commenced official league play in the 2002-03 season. As women’s ice hockey steadily expanded from its original status as an emerging sport to its current status as an NCAA championship sport, it became apparent that Hockey East should seriously consider sponsoring a separate league to accommodate its five member schools that had varsity programs: Boston College, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern, and Providence. Head Coach Tim Whitehead enters his fourth season at the helm of the University of Maine men's ice hockey program. With Whitehead behind the bench, the Black Bears have continued the success that has defined the program for nearly two decades.

In his first three seasons as head coach, the Black Bears have advanced to the NCM Tournament all three seasons, reached the NCM National Championship game twice and won the Hockey East Tournament Championship. Over the three year period, Maine has a 83-29-15 record. In eight seasons as a head coach, Whitehead has a career record of 159-124-26.
