The Cultivation Of Thinking Dispositions In Grades Three And Four, Linda L. Taylor Dec 1997

The Cultivation Of Thinking Dispositions In Grades Three And Four, Linda L. Taylor

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

Thinking dispositions are the internal motivation for thinking critically and creatively. Successful critical thinkers use theirs without another person directing them to use the skills. Many individuals, having acquired these skills, fail to use them. Tishman and Perkins suggest that inadequate development of the dispositions necessary to invoke the thinking skills account for the second behavior. In my work as an enrichment specialist, I have found support for this view. In this paper I present a case study of my work with third and fourth grade students, which focuses on developing the attitudes and dispositions needed for successful critical and …

Children, Storybooks And Computers, Susan Talley, David F. Lancy, Thomas R. Lee

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study was designed to test the use of CD-ROM storybook programs' effects on preschool aged children's emergent literacy. 73 four-year-old children, divided into three study groups (experimental, control and well-read-to control) all enrolled in a Head Start program were given the opportunity to use CD-ROM storybooks during their free-choice time for approximately eight weeks. At the end of the trial period, the experimental group was compared with the control group and with their well-read-to peers. Results indicated that CD-ROM storybook programs may have a significant effect on the emergent reading skills of those children who are not as well-read-to …

Constructing Meaning From Literature: Examining Discourse In Departmentalized, Multidisciplinary, And Interdisciplinary Contexts, Joyce E. Many, Lisa Nicklow, Rebecca Hutchingson

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This naturalistic study examines the literary discourse which occurred in a sixth-grade language arts classroom within a departmentalized, a multidisciplinary, and then an interdisciplinary context. Audio tapes and accompanying field notes of all literature discussions surrounding three novels served as the primary data source. Secondary data sources included informal and formal interviews with the participants. Using a constant-comparative approach we identified elements of discourse and organized these elements into the following broad themes: 1) the text and the story world; 2) the reader and the story world; and 3) discipline knowledge and the story world. The literary discussions within the …

"Daddy, Read To Me": Fathers Helping Their Young Children Learn To Read, Robert W. Ortiz, Laurie L. Mccarty

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Parents' involvement in their young children's early reading development is reported to be an important prerequisite to school success. Much of the research on parents' contribution to early literacy development has focused on mother-child interaction. Less is known about the role of fathers. Fathers, however, report that they want to be involved with their children's literacy development when given opportunities to do things they feel are interesting and capable of doing. Studies indicate that fathers' involvement with early literacy activities range from reading recreation-related materials to assisting their children with school assignments. This paper provides background information concerning research into …

Collegiate Activities That Influence Adult Physical Fitness Habits, Linda L. King

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This descriptive/correlational study analyzed the perception of recent graduates regarding the effectiveness of the college environment at Milligan College in influencing adult fitness habits. Graduates were divided into five activity level groups through a self-report of physical activity. The purposes of the research were to determine if significant differences existed between the dependent variable, activity level, and the independent variables such as: (a) participation in specific college activities, (b) preferences for types of exercise, (c) social influence, (d) influence of a required freshman fitness course, and (e) environmental barriers. A profile of the student most likely to exercise after graduation …

A college campus is supposed to he a place that fosters diversity open-mindedness, exchange of ideas and, above all, freedom of expression. Congratulations to all of you who may have been offended by the material in the September issue of Klipsun but chose to ignore your own bias and open your mind to new ideas.

Chris Cooper's art is graphic, even gross. We know that. There have been suggestions that we chose to run the images simply because we had them and wanted to increase our readership through cheap shock value. Some people have questioned the appropriateness of the images …

The Rediscovery Of Grounded Theory: Strategies For Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Wayne A. Babchuk Dec 1997

The Rediscovery Of Grounded Theory: Strategies For Qualitative Research In Adult Education, Wayne A. Babchuk

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Grounded theory is becoming an increasingly popular research methodology for use in adult education and other forms of educational inquiry, yet there is currently considerable disagreement among its co-founders concerning the implementation of this approach. Reflective of this ambiguity and to further confuse matters for the potential grounded theorist, educators who have used this methodology in the field often operationalize grounded theory’s procedures and practices according to their own interpretations and contextualiy-specific research needs. Moreover, these analysts often do not thoroughly document the specifics of their research, often failing to provide information concerning the methodological decisions they surely must have …

Literacy Lessons From The Childhoods Of Authors, Marcia Baghban Dec 1997

Literacy Lessons From The Childhoods Of Authors, Marcia Baghban

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

The retrospectives of authors' childhoods can provide courageous portraits for children. Their examples demonstrate how reading and writing helped these professionals not only survive illness, loneliness, and rejection, but also forge meaningful lives. Children need to hear their stories, and so do adults. This piece reviews the role that literacy played in the childhoods of Eudora Welty, Madeleine L'Engle, and Jack London, and contrasts aspects of their childhoods with aspects of contemporary childhoods. The contrast sounds a clarion call to today's adults to assume greater responsibility for how children spend their time.

Ideal And Actual Mentor Teacher Characteristics As Perceived By Second-Year And Non-Returning First-Year Public School North Carolina Teachers, Barbara D. Tipton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The researcher examined non-returning first-year teachers and second year teachers who taught during the 1994-95 school year. The research design included five research questions with six null hypotheses testing for differences among second year teachers' perceptions and non-returning teachers' perceptions of their mentor teachers. After calculating ratings on desired and demonstrated scales by 464 subjects, criteria were ranked on mentor characteristics on 12 tasks. The extent to which each task was demonstrated during their first year's teaching experience was also calculated. Participants indicated that the ideal mentor would advocate for the novice and would demonstrate a sensitive approach in assisting. …

Teacher Perceptions Of Parent Involvement In Literacy Education, Wayne M. Linek, Timothy V. Rasinski, Donna M. Harkins Dec 1997

Teacher Perceptions Of Parent Involvement In Literacy Education, Wayne M. Linek, Timothy V. Rasinski, Donna M. Harkins

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Parent involvement appears to hold great potential for the improvement of literacy education. Without the coordination and support ofthe classroom teacher, however, the effects of such involvement may not be maximized. A question central to the development of parent involvement programs is, "Do teachers recognize and support parent involvement as a significant component of children's education?" The purpose of this informal study was to describe perceptions of parent involvement in literacy education. Over sixty teachers from a cross section of schools in a Midwestern metropolitan area were interviewed in depth about their attitudes toward parent involvement in reading. A structured …

The Effect Of Remedial Education Programs On Academic Achievement And Persistence At The Two-Year Community College, Lyn Ann Batzer Dec 1997

The Effect Of Remedial Education Programs On Academic Achievement And Persistence At The Two-Year Community College, Lyn Ann Batzer

Dissertations

Community colleges are open door institutions that serve students who may lack the basic skills necessary to succeed in college. The number of academically underprepared students attending community colleges has been increasing over the years. Thus, there is a corresponding need for effective remedial programs to prepare the academically underprepared students for college-level work.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of remedial education. More specifically, the study was designed to measure the performance of academically underprepared students who complete required remediation compared to academically underprepared students who do not complete remediation.

The study tested two hypotheses: …

Programmed Instruction: Within-Subject Analysis Of Four Types Of Instructional Material, Matthew L. Miller Dec 1997

Programmed Instruction: Within-Subject Analysis Of Four Types Of Instructional Material, Matthew L. Miller

Dissertations

Skinner (1958) expressed the need for an increase in the effectiveness and efficiency of education. In particular, he suggested that programmed instruction could provide such efficiency. The present study used a within-subject design to compare the effects of four types of instructional materials: those requiring overt construction responses, overt discrimination responses, covert reading of text with highlighted key words, and covert reading of standard text. The material requiring overt responding produced greater learning than did the covert reading materials, with or without highlighting. There was no difference found between the two types of overt responding; nor were there differences between …
