Daniel J. Belliveau
Programmed cell death is an ongoing process in both the developing and the mature nervous system. The tumor suppressor gene, p53, can induce apoptosis in a number of different cell types. Recently, the enhanced expression of p53 has been observed during acute neurological disease. To determine whether p53 overexpression could influence neuronal survival, we used a recombinant adenovirus vector carrying wild type p53 to transduce postmitotic neurons. A control consisting of the same adenovirus vector background but carrying the lacZ reporter expression cassette was used to establish working parameters for the effective genetic manipulation of sympathetic neurons. We have found …

Specific-Purpose Language Performance Tests : Task And Interaction, Tom Lumley, Annie Brown
Dr Tom Lumley
Oral performance tests designed to assess candidates' ability to function in a particular professional role typically involve role plays which simulate aspects of professional interaction between a candidate, in his/her professional role, and an interlocutor, in the role of client or consumer of the professional services. This paper reports on an investigation into the role which expert professional informants can play in providing post hoc content validation of tasks used in this kind of occupation-specific test, focusing on both the content of the tasks and the behaviour of the interlocutors. The study draws on data from the oral interaction component …

Effects Of Teacher Organization/Preparation And Teacher Skill/Clarity On General Cognitive Skills In College., Ernest Pascarella, Marcia Edison, Amaury Nora, Linda S. Hagedorn, John Braxton
Linda Serra Hagedorn
Controlling for such factors as precollege cognitive ability and academic motivation, ethnicity, gender, exposure to college, work responsibilities, and the pattern of courses taken, students reporting that the first-year instruction they received was well organized and prepared tended to demonstrate greater general cognitive development than their peers who reported receiving less organized and prepared instruction. Implications for student affairs are discussed.
Educating Street Children: Some Cross-Cultural Perspectives, Irving Epstein
Educating Street Children: Some Cross-Cultural Perspectives, Irving Epstein
Irving Epstein
This paper analyzes various institutional responses to homelessness among children and youth as a means of better understanding the workings of the neo-liberal state, both in the developing and the developed world. This is a fruitful exercise because the culture of the street is unique and is difficult to reconcile with the predominant values of state-sponsored institutions. In making this argument, the American and Brazilian cases are specifically discussed, as they are seen as representative of neo-liberalism in the developed and developing world. Although each case includes significant differences, a major contradiction of neo-liberalism, with particular reference to its promotion …

The Midwife Vrs The Vroedvrouw-The Troubled History Of Midwifery In The United States As Compared To The Stability Of Midwifery In The Netherlands., Kathleen A. Strub-Richards
Kathleen A Strub-Richards
The struggle for midwifery has been a long and arduous journey in the United States. Even today it is only legally recognized in sixteen states. This is a major contrast between the midwives in the Netherlands who have had complete autonomy over normal births since early in the 19th century. I am very interested in the history of midwifery in these two separate countries since I gave birth to a baby in Amsterdam and am about to give birth to one here in the United States. I plan to trace the history of midwifery in both the USA and Holland …

Effects Of Gender, Gender Role, And Individualized Trust On Self-Disclosure., John D. Foubert, Barbara Sholley
John D. Foubert
Effects of gender, gender role, and individualized trust on self disclosure was studied on 293 participants. An interaction between gender role and individualized trust revealed that the high self disclosure typical of androgynous individuals is restricted to those who are high trusting.

Overcoming Men's Defensiveness Toward Sexual Assault Programs: Learning To Help Survivors., John D. Foubert, Kenneth A. Marriott
John D. Foubert
A unique new approach to overcoming men's defensiveness toward sexual assault prevention programs is described. By appealing to audience members as potential helpers of women who survive rape as opposed to addressing them as potential rapists, programmatic goals can be achieved.
Coming Out Of The Closet: Young Gay Men's Experiences In The Process Of Coming Out, Ronald Macdonald
Coming Out Of The Closet: Young Gay Men's Experiences In The Process Of Coming Out, Ronald Macdonald
Dr. Ronald Macdonald
Coming out of the closet is a decision that all young gay men consider, however there has been little recent research undertaken which investigates this phenomenon.
The purpose of this qualitative study is to provide an account of young men’s experiences in the process of coming out and a critical analysis of the influences of cultural, political and social factors which impinge on the process. A phenomenological method (utilising Colaizzi’s procedural steps) will be employed to collect data and to extrapolate common themes and meanings. A purposeful sample of seven young gay men were interviewed. Data was collected from taped …

Addressing Equity In Alberta, John R. Fisher, Moshe Elhav
Addressing Equity In Alberta, John R. Fisher, Moshe Elhav
Dr. John R. Fisher
This paper provides a historical review of equity in funding education in Alberta. It describes government attempts to address fiscal inequities and shows how the introduction of full funding in 1994 addressed many of the equity problems in Alberta. Horizontal equity has improved. However, the province needs to consider ways to improve vertical equity--the need for different amounts of funding to meet different needs--and other inequities affecting student achievement and access to knowledge.
