The Business Week Awards for Instructional Innovation were designed to recognize and reward innovative teachers and to foster the adaptation of successful teacher designed curricula. The developers of the test are asking that persons in the earth science education community provide feedback concerning the first edition of the exam (published in 1988) and submit new items for inclusion in the second edition.

In the past ten years, major reports have appeared criticizing the educational system. A number of these suggest that schools are not producing adults willing to take an active citizenship role in society. Such reports as A Nation at Risk (NCEE, 1983) and The Carnegie Report (Boyer, 1983) are among many general education studies which address this point. If science educators -- curriculum planners, supervisors and teachers -- were linked by telecommunications networks, all could experience the advantages of a conference without the usual disadvantages, such as travel costs or loss of valuable work hours. And these experiences could be frequent, regular and on-going. Motivated by such possibilities, the Council of State Science Supervisors began setting up a national telecommunications network for science education in 1986. Iowa geodes have long been objects of curiosity, their sparkling interiors containing some of the most beautiful crystals to be found anywhere in the Midwest. Although geodes are known from many localities around the world, one of the most productive and famous collecting regions is encompassed within a 35-mile radius of Keokuk, Iowa. Rock collectors commonly refer to geodes from this region as "Keokuk geodes." In keeping with the world-renowned status of the Iowa geodes, the Iowa General Assembly declared the geode as the official "State Rock" in 1967.

In a recent letter to ISTJ, Marshalltown science teacher James J. Hungerford strongly recommended a simulation of recombinant DNA that he found in the April 1987 issue of The Science Teacher. Using Christie L. Jenkins' article, Recombinant Paper Plasmids as a guide, Hungerford was able to reproduce the simulation for his students and found that they both enjoyed and learned from the experience.

The United States Geological Survey has compiled two packets of teaching aids which vary according to purpose and grade level. One, "Teacher's Packet of Geologic Materials," is available to secondary teachers of earth science (for whom the contents were selected) and to college teachers of geology. Another packet, "Selected Packet of Geologic Teaching Aids," was compiled for elementary and secondary teachers of geography, social studies, general science, environmental education and oceanography.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (in cooperation with the Wisconsin Geological and Natural History Survey) has made available an 11" x 17" color poster titled "Groundwater and Land Use in the Water Cycle." The poster illustrates various aspects of the water cycle from precipitation to transpiration and evaporation including runoff, erosion, saturation, groundwater movement and the location of and movement through various aquifers.
