The purposes of this study were to explore the relationships between teacher efficacy and changes in teacher behavior and student learning espoused by the standards-based reform movement and to examine the impact of a curriculum innovation on student learning and teacher efficacy The study was designed to target sophisticated pedagogical behavior associated with setting high learner expectations.;The context for the research was a federally funded project to develop and implement model lessons in elementary social studies in an urban setting. The purpose of this study was to investigate role perceptions of elected and appointed school board members and their superintendents in Virginia to determine if increased citizen participation and cultural change had affected the process of school governance. Four policy issue areas provided the context for revealing role perceptions: Administration and Organization, Business and Financial Management, Employee and Pupil Personnel Services, and Curriculum and Instruction. A 27-item survey was sent to superintendents and school board members of 64 school divisions, 31 of which had appointed boards and 33 of which had elected boards. The purpose of this study was to investigate the claim that nursing students in nontraditional curricula achieve program outcomes consistent with nursing students in traditional generic curricula. Clinical decision making and clinical judgment are essential components of critical thinking in nursing. Self-perception as a decision-maker was measured by the Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale (CDMNS) and clinical judgment was measured by the Clinical Judgment in Nursing Series #1: Emergencies in Adult Client Care Test (CJS:EACC).;Participants were recruited from three regional universities. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between placement in inclusive and pull-out special education programs and academic and behavior outcomes for students with learning disabilities. Demographic data such as age, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, IQ, education level of the mother, years receiving special education services, and years in the school district established comparability of two groups of middle school students. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to describe two schools and their special education service delivery models, one inclusive and the other pull-out. The purpose of this study was to examine the degree to which cooperative learning affects the active participation or engagement of students in the classroom. Previous research has found that students were more engaged during lecture and classroom discourse methods of instruction (anderson & Scott, 1978). The research investigated whether 4 x 4 block scheduling had any effect on students' achievement in Advanced Placement Calculus AB and described some of the dynamics involved in the shifts to 4 x 4 plans. Data from 52 schools (38 North Carolina, 14 Virginia) were divided into two groups: (Sample 1) 25 schools in which the course was taught in one semester (N = 252) and (Sample 2) 27 schools in which it was taught in two semesters (N = 355). Old Dominion University's Peninsula Center, in Hampton, Virginia, was the location for an ethnographic case study about the urban "distributed university" centers that provided instruction via video teleconference (VTC). Graduate engineers attended VTC classes at the Peninsula Center originating from five Virginia universities as part of the Commonwealth Graduate Engineering Program.;The purpose of this study was to describe VTC instruction and identify aspects that impacted on student learning, faculty teaching, and the socio-cultural environment. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in achievement scores and pass rates on Virginia's Literacy Passport Test between students who volunteered for and received additional instruction, students who volunteered for but did not receive the instruction, and students who neither volunteered for nor received interventional instruction in a program for rising sixth graders identified as potentially at-risk of initially failing the LPT.;It was hypothesized that (1) volunteers' scores of those who attended the summer program would show higher achievement and pass rates than either the scores of the volunteers without additional instruction and …

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the degree to which a principal demonstrates instructional leadership and student achievement in small high schools in Virginia. This inquiry was an extension of previous research which has examined the relationship between these two variables in urban elementary schools. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the Cognitive Process of Instruction (CPOI), a cognitive strategy approach to writing instruction. An important emphasis o f the CPOI approach was a strategy designed to help students build a conceptual framework for the main idea paragraph as a means of improving composing skill.;The sample included 121 fifth grade elementary school students. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between academic intrinsic motivation and positive teacher verbal feedback, negative teacher verbal feedback, and student aptitude for academic work. The research questions evolved from the Cognitive Evaluation Theory of Edward Deci (Deci & Ryan, 1985) in which intrinsic motivation develops out of a sense of competence and self-determination. The purpose of this research was to investigate the potential utilization of adventure education programs to provide an effective and innovative alternative for enhancing the college undergraduate experience. Initial research consisted of performing an indepth study of higher education's curriculum reform literature and studies and literature on adventure education programs. Specific components of the curriculum reform literature regarding character development were then correlated with attributes discovered in the adventure education literature. The purpose of this study was to determine whether computer assisted instruction of mathematics produces significantly greater improvement in mathematics performance of low achieving ninth grade students than teaching mathematics skills without computer assisted instruction.;The sample consisted of four classes (N = 46) of ninth grade students who had registered for the course "Mathematics Nine," and whose eighth grade ITBS scores fell between the 1st and 30th national percentile. The purpose of this study was to investigate the integration of an attribution retraining program and a cognitive self-instruction procedure as a means of improving the academic performance and component attentional skills and modifying the cognitive-behavioral beliefs and behaviors of elementary-age children served in self-contained learning disabilities (SCLD) programs.;Subjects were 77 children, 10-13 years of age, served in public school SCLD programs. The purposes of this comparative study were to determine the effects of (1) a specially developed gifted curriculum for grades four and five on gifted learners, (2) two contrasting instructional delivery systems for gifted students, and (3) differential levels of teacher training in gifted education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the amount of verbal interaction between a student and a teacher and that student's achievement in the class taught by that teacher at the secondary school level.
