A Perspective On The History And Philosophy Of Andragogy: An International Sketch-Part 2, John A. Henschke Edd

IACE Hall of Fame Repository

This paper on the History and Philosophy of Andragogy is mainly limited (with a few exceptions) to a chronological history and the accompanying philosophy of andragogy, in line with when the English language documents were published and personal descriptions of events were written down. Some of these documents, however, present aspects of the events and ideas which recount the years and contexts in which they appeared in published form. This will not be an exact history of the events and philosophy as they appear in chronological order. But, this will be presented in the general sequence of the years that …

The Biology Of Reality Testing - Implications For Cognitive Education, Neil Greenberg Jan 2010

The Biology Of Reality Testing - Implications For Cognitive Education, Neil Greenberg

Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

• This report explores the proposition that teaching effectiveness can be enhanced by accommodating the key differences between two complementary and deeply engrained modes of reality testing, each predominantly centered in different hemispheres of the brain. • (1) Correspondence involves “reality-testing” of a percept, the cerebral representation of an experience in the world. • (2) Coherence involves “textualizing”, that is, reality-testing of a percept by how easily it relates to previous and ongoing parallel and collateral experiences. • Confidence in the validity of any percept throughout development is related to the interplay of these key processes. • As organisms develop, …

To improve the efficiency of Ryan-Matura Library's electronic reserve (e-reserve) service, the staff of the library and the Office of Instructional Technology at Sacred Heart University codeveloped and implemented a system that streamlined the request and delivery of e-reserves for faculty and students. This system utilizes the institution's integrated course/content management system (Blackboard) along with a custom-built Web application that facilitates the request, retrieval, digitization, and delivery of e-reserve materials directly to students within their Blackboard courses.

Plagiarism: The Legal Landscape, Robert Berry Jan 2010

Plagiarism: The Legal Landscape, Robert Berry

Librarian Publications

In Chapter 10, Robert Berry discusses legal issues regarding plagiarism and academic cases of intellectual dishonesty.

From the Introduction: Colleges and universities with plagiarism policies that are fundamentally fair—and that are applied consistently—enjoy three significant advantages over those that do not. First, these schools enjoy greater legitimacy in the eyes of the people who must live with their decisions. They exercise genuine moral authority in their decision making, which is much more consistent with the goals of education, and they avoid the exercise of raw power that often accompanies ad hoc decision making. Second, educational institutions with fair policies are …

At the beginning of the second decade of the twenty-first century, a new vision for college learning is clearly in view. The LEAP essential learning outcomes provide a framework to guide student learning in both general education and the major. The LEAP initiative calls upon college administrators and faculty members to give priority to these essential learning outcomes in order to …

Middle and Secondary Education Faculty Publications

Understanding the tenets of copyright in general, and in particular, in online communication and publishing with Web 2.0 tools, has become an important part of literacy in today’s Information Age, as well as a cornerstone of free speech and responsible citizenship for the future. Young content creators must be educated about copyright law, their own rights as content creators, and their responsibilities as producers and publishers of content derived from the intellectual property of others. As educators, we want to prepare them for responsible and ethical participation in new forms of creative expression in the Information Age. The recent integration …

Untapped Potential: Seeking Library Donors Among Alumni Of Distance Learning Programs, Anne Marie Casey, Michael Lorenzen

Staff Works - Hunt Library

In recent years, decreases in higher education budgets have forced academic libraries to rely more heavily on philanthropy in order to operate or expand collections. Alumni are the most obvious potential donors to an academic library. Many alumni recognize the library as part of their higher education experience and are happy to give to the library. For many institutions with distance learning programs, a growing number of alumni have never been to campus or have rarely visited but they may use and appreciate library services. However, few academic libraries have attempted to tap this source of potential donors. This paper …

Understanding Issues Related To Today’S College Students: Dealing With Burnout [Brochure And Video], Kendrick William Bryan, Huishan Li

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

Academic burnout reaches thousands of students each year. Nick Repak of Grad Resources writes, “Excessive workload, lack of balance, and little opportunity to influence the environment make up only part of the fatigue syndrome.” Student affairs professionals and others commonly list assignment overload, outside influences, lack of personal motivation, mental and physical health, and instructor attitude and behavior as precursors to student burnout. Weidong Wu writes burnout can be attributed to the influence of bad social style and culture, unprecedented employment pressure, and deficiencies in college education. Attending college is stressful for many, but gaining an awareness about burnout can …

Body Image [Brochure And Video], Jorge J. Wellmann, Charli Beth Ferrell

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

Every person has a view of their body image. However, some people’s views of their body image are more skewed than others. College students are no exception to this, in fact, college students may be at a higher risk than any other group of people to have a skewed body image. The student project completed on the subject showed that as the definition of body image upholds everyone looks at their bodies differently. Having a skewed body image can lead to: working out in excess, never being relaxed about his/her body, putting him/herself down a lot, checking weight more than …

All The World's A Stage: Reaching English Language Learners Through Drama, Laura M. S. Fortney

Research and Evaluation in Education, Technology, Art, and Design

The use of drama with language instruction has long been considered a legitimate practice. A recent survey of the literature shows that English Language Learners (ELLs) may have even more to benefit from the use of drama in the classroom. Studies showed an increase in language and problem-solving ability, as well as student self-efficacy that was transferrable across activities. Following an analysis of the literature is a proposed curriculum based on the findings of the researchers cited. This unit is centered on dramatic activities that make use of all four language domains and includes the examination of plays in writing, …

The growth of human-animal studies (HAS) over the past twenty years can be seen in the explosion of new books, journals, conferences, organizations, college programs, listserves, and courses, both in the United States and throughout Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. We look as well at trends in the field, including the increasing popularity of animal-assisted therapy programs, the rise of new fields like trans-species psychology and critical animal studies, and the importance of animal welfare science. We also discuss the problems continuing to face the field, including the conservative culture of universities, the interdisciplinary nature of the field, the …

Job Satisfaction Of Naia Head Coaches At Small Faith-Based Colleges: The Teacher-Coach Model, Craig L. Stiemsma

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

The head coaches at smaller colleges usually have other job responsibilities that include teaching, along with the responsibilities of coaching, recruiting, scheduling, and other coaching-related jobs. There is often a dual role involved for these coaches who try to juggle two different jobs that sometimes require different skill sets and involve different responsibilities that may lead to role conflict. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the level of job satisfaction of coaches in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). This study also sought to determine if there were differences in coaches' levels of job satisfaction based on …
