Communication Faculty Publications

Objective. To examine faculty members’ and students’ expectations and perceptions of e-mail communication in a dual pathway pharmacy program. Methods. Three parallel survey instruments were administered to campus students, distance students, and faculty members, respectively. Focus groups with students and faculty were conducted. Results. Faculty members perceived themselves as more accessible and approachable by e-mail than either group of students did. Campus students expected a shorter faculty response time to e-mail and for faculty members to be more available than did distance students. Conclusion. E-mail is an effective means of computer-mediated communication between faculty members and students and can be …

The Role Of Community College Faculty In Teaching And Learning For Sustainable Development, Anouchka Rachelson

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes, beliefs, and practices of community college professors regarding education for sustainable development (ESD). In-depth interviews with 14 professors from different disciplines were conducted. The participants taught at Miami Dade College, Florida, a Talloires Declaration signatory since 2006, and all had attended Green Studies professional development workshops. Written documents such as assignments and samples of student work were used for triangulation. The annual report of the college’s Earth Ethics Institute and its Web site served as additional sources. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed for common themes. The Talloires Declaration’s …

The Effect Of College Student Demographic Variables On Teacher Enmeshment, Mark S. Walzer, Katharyn E.K. Nottis Oct 2010

The Effect Of College Student Demographic Variables On Teacher Enmeshment, Mark S. Walzer, Katharyn E.K. Nottis

NERA Conference Proceedings 2009

Interactions between students and faculty outside of class appear to be linked to greater achievement during and after college (Anaya & Cole, 2001; Hathaway, Nagda, & Gregerman, 2002). However, sometimes there can be blurred personal boundaries and a lack of autonomy in relationships or what has been labeled enmeshment. The purpose of the current pilot study was to investigate the effect of race/ethnicity, gender, year in college, and college major on faculty-student relationships and teacher enmeshment. Teacher enmeshment was measured with the Teacher Enmeshment subscale of the Separation-Individuation Test of Adolescence (SITA; Levine & Saintonge, 1993). A sample of 165 …

The Purpose Of A College Education: Getting A Job: Narrations Of First-Generation College Students, Angela C. Thering Oct 2010

The Purpose Of A College Education: Getting A Job: Narrations Of First-Generation College Students, Angela C. Thering

NERA Conference Proceedings 2010

This research examines the educational experiences of a group of 18 white, working-class, first-generation college students and how these experiences prepared them to be successful in college. Most participants had always intended to attend college, despite their parent’s level of education. The data set for this study is derived from quasi-life history, qualitative interviews concerning participants’ educational experiences from all levels of schooling. This research seeks to address gaps in the literature concerning the educational backgrounds and understandings of white, working-class, first-generation college students as a means to assist colleges and universities in the recruitment and retention of this particular …

A Quality Scorecard For The Administration Of Online Education Programs: A Delphi Study, Kaye Shelton Sep 2010

A Quality Scorecard For The Administration Of Online Education Programs: A Delphi Study, Kaye Shelton

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

As the demands for public accountability increase for the higher education industry, institutions are seeking methods for continuous improvement in order to demonstrate quality within programs and processes, including those provided through online education. Because of the rapid growth of online education programs, institutions are further called upon to demonstrate that quality education is being delivered to students at a distance. This study sought to create such a method to provide institutions offering online education an instrument for assessing quality within their programs: a quality scorecard for the administration of online education programs. A six round Delphi study was undertaken …

The Zen Of Annual Meeting Attendance And Conferencing, Jeffrey D. Senese Jul 2010

The Zen Of Annual Meeting Attendance And Conferencing, Jeffrey D. Senese

Administration Publications and Research

I have attended and been involved in dozens of annual meetings and conferences across the United States over the past decade. My experiences at these events, I am certain, are likely to be very similar to those of most readers. At these conferences the basic format involves a large number of people coming together to presumably learn something new, to interact with colleagues, to network and meet new colleagues within the context of bringing what is learned back ones institution.

The Hours – A Film To Enhance Teaching Psychology, Christina J. Taylor

Psychology Faculty Publications

Hollywood films provide a rich and engaging means for teaching students about psychological topics. The Hours is an especially noteworthy film because of the wide range of psychological issues touched upon, including mental illness, gender roles, families, chronic illness, bereavement, caregiving, sexuality, and sexual orientation. Analysis of the film in this paper provides instructors of courses in psychology, social work, nursing, medicine, women's studies, and related courses, with suggestions for how this compelling film can help students develop in their understanding of human psychology. Demonstrates the pedagogical value of using the feature film to learn about psychological topics, and its …

Openness As Catalyst For An Educational Reformation, David Wiley Jul 2010

Openness As Catalyst For An Educational Reformation, David Wiley

Faculty Publications

The word open is receiving a lot of attention in education circles. Openness in higher education has been discussed recently by writers in the Chronicle of Higher Education, the New York Times, EDUCAUSE Review, and EQ, among other publications. In January 2010, The Horizon Report, produced by the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), declared that open content will “reach mainstream use” in higher education within the next twelve months. But what does that mean? What is this open we keep hearing about?

Under Scrutiny, Susan Gracia, Monica Darcy, Marie A. Lynch Jun 2010

Under Scrutiny, Susan Gracia, Monica Darcy, Marie A. Lynch

Faculty Publications

The National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education (NCATE) requires advanced programs in schools of education to develop and implement high quality unit assessment systems reflecting their conceptual framework and incorporating candidate proficiencies outlined in professional, state, and institutional standards. This is difficult for advanced level programs that are structured differently, award many types of degrees, and prepare candidates for various teaching and non-teaching roles. Faculty buy-in to unit-level assessment is challenging, as well, and the ways advanced programs choose to implement a unit assessment system are not always psychometrically sound. This article describes the process of revising a units …

Where Next? A Study Of Work And Life Experiences Of Mature Students (Incl. Disadvantaged) In Three Higher Education Institutions, Aidan Kenny, Ted Fleming, Andrew Loxley, Fergal Finnegan Jun 2010

Where Next? A Study Of Work And Life Experiences Of Mature Students (Incl. Disadvantaged) In Three Higher Education Institutions, Aidan Kenny, Ted Fleming, Andrew Loxley, Fergal Finnegan

Other Resources

This study explores how graduates who entered college as mature students, and ‘disadvantaged’ mature students, view and value Higher Education after graduating with a primary degree. The study highlighted the limited usefulness of the concept of disadvantaged mature student and the findings of the research were not significantly different whether one was a mature student or a disadvantaged mature student. The rationale given by the state for supporting mature students in Higher Education (HE) is that it will yield economic and social benefits for both the students and society. As a consequence a wide range of access policies has been …
