Understanding the culture of other nations contributes to the development of responsible citizens in a democratic society. A classroom teaching team proved these activities to be successful. Five initial lessons introduce students to the study of China by teaching Chinese geography. To enhance cultural understanding; 10 additional lessons focus on the following aspects of Chinese culture: (1) flags; (2) agriculture; (3) calligraphy; (4) calendar; (5) inventions; (6) karate; (7) tangrams; (8) crafts; (9) folk tales; and (10) Confucius. The unit culminates with plans for preparing Chinese dinner; having an open house; or organizing a homeroom meeting. Each lesson includes learner …

Research on the prevalence, characteristics, and treatment of obesity of mentally retarded individuals within the context of research findings with the obese nonretarded population was selectively reviewed. According to the available literature, obesity is a prevalent problem in the retarded population, and there is a greater incidence among females than males. The literature also suggests that obese retarded subjects as a group can be distinguished from their nonobese peers by their physical condition, but not by their eating style or personality characteristics. Behavioral self-control strategies have been found to be effective in producing weight loss in obese retarded children and …

In response to our concerns, Project WILD officials asked our organizations to submit a critique of the material, together with any changes which we consider necessary in the materials. We have done so. The result is this Special Report.

(1) Discontinue distribution of the Project WILD guides until the problems which we have documented are satisfactorily solved; and,

One dramatic technique to aid students in their discovery of values and value systems is "theatre-in-education" (TIE); a theatre event that takes place in schools; with actors working through roles for and with children. TIE aims to fuse education and theatre by having team members function as both teachers and actors; and the audiences of young people participate as both themselves and characters. TIE programs can be grouped into five categories ranging from full participation (category I); to full performance (category V). This unit of 20 classroom learning episodes is structured to improve students' ability to read and interpret maps and globes. Performance objectives; outlined in part 1; include developing map and globe skills to locate; acquire; organize; interpret; evaluate; and express knowledge and information. Each of the learning episodes in part 2 contains instructional objectives; learning activities; and materials needed to carry out the activity. The learning episodes require 1 to 3 days of instructional time. Barriers To Adoption Of Special Needs Children: A National Study, James G. Mccullagh

This exploratory study analyzed the incidence and nature of barriers experienced by applicants wishing to adopt special needs children; defined as: "children who are older; have physical disabilities; are emotionally troubled; or are mentally retarded. Many are Black or Hispanic. Some are brothers and sisters who need a home together." Between mid-January and the end of June 1984; approximately 13;000 questionnaires were mailed to affiliates of the North American Council on Adoptable Children (NACAC); foster parents associations; and other groups and individuals. Usable surveys were returned by 535 respondents; of whom 55.7 percent were identified as having experienced a homestudy …

Black History: African Heritage; American Heritage, Joan Duea

Providing elementary school teachers with materials to enhance student awareness of black heritage is the goal of this unit. Each of the 10 lessons includes objectives; materials; and procedures as well as supplementary materials that may be duplicated for student use. The land and people of Africa are studied in lessons one through three. Games; folktales; and songs are used in lesson four to study African culture. Children simulate a safari to learn the different countries of Africa. Lesson five explores the journey of blacks from slavery to freedom.
