Since 1983-84 when Peter Gavett took over as women's basketball coach, the team has undergone many new changes. With the formation of the new Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Seaboard Conference, Maine will be competing against Boston University, University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University, the University of Vermont, Hartford and Brooklyn College on a regular basis for a league championship. Two to four more teams may be added in the next year to give Maine a highly competitive Division I conference. A solid nucleus returns from last year’s squad that finished fourth in the Eastern Swimming and Diving Association championships. Added to that is a promising group of freshmen who should combine well with the upperclassmen.

The freestyle events should once again be strong and deep. Captain Pete Zeiger will lead this group, especially at the 200 distance, with help from Sam Jalet. Jay Morissette will lead the sprinters, while John Giglio and Rick DesJardins should provide strength in the distance. Newcomers Andy Campbell, Tom Caprio, and Konrad Martin should be especially strong contributors in freestyle. Freshmen Dan Ottman, Jonathan Hewitt, Neal Westphalen, and Rodney Mason all have excellent opportunities to contribute in freestyle.

In just six short years, the University of Maine at Orono hockey program has experienced just about every up and down there is. Two years ago, the team qualified for the ECAC Division I playoffs after only two years in the league. Previous to that, Maine had qualified for the Division II East tournament in 1979 after only two years as a varsity. On the other side of the coin, after losing 15 players to graduation last year, the Black Bears slipped to an 8-21 record and a last place finish in the ECAC.
