Blending Strategic Planning, Assessments, And Budgeting, Leonard Brazis, Tamilla Curtis, Richard Roach

Dr. Tamilla Curtis

Learn practical lessons and techniques that have been developed at a large, multi-campus private university that allow academic planners and administrators to develop effective strategic planning initiatives within existing budget constraints. This study will illustrate how effective assessments drive strategic planning initiatives that allow institutions to move toward achieving their vision without requiring new revenue. This process theory illustrates how assessments, strategic planning, and budgets can be linked successfully.

Castles and Bridges: Interdisciplinary Research and its Role in Connecting Academic Disciplines - A Study in Law as an Autonomous Discipline and its relation to other Sciences

Alhajeri, Mashael A.

The classic classification of knowledge into disciplines is an old academic tradition that dates back to the times of ancient Greece. This taxonomy survived until the middle ages, and was well established during the renaissance. Its characteristics where defined with the development of social sciences and humanities, which evolved in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

In addition, of those non-attendees, labour force participation is also remarkably low. A supplementary table to the report, which shows education participation rates by Australian federal electorates is also available.

The Impact Of Increasing Competition For University On Disadvantaged Government School Students, Daniel Edwards Aug 2007

The Impact Of Increasing Competition For University On Disadvantaged Government School Students, Daniel Edwards

Dr Daniel Edwards

The influence of socioeconomic status on academic outcomes has been well documented in literature exploring post school pathways. Such accounts of educational disadvantage exist in relation to Melbourne, Australia as they do in other cities across the developed world. However, over the past decade in Melbourne there has been an increased stratification of educational outcomes that cannot necessarily be explained by any parallel increase in social inequality. This differentiation of outcomes has been the result of growing competition for university places – stemming from growth in the school aged population and rising retention rates, but accompanied by no equivalent increase …

Collaboration: Advocacy For School Change, Cynthia Strong Aug 2007

Collaboration: Advocacy For School Change, Cynthia Strong

Cynthia Strong

Adolescent literacy is a looming issue in secondary schools. Being able to read, comprehend, and write is imperative for students to understand the content of their classes and textbooks. According to Michael Kamil, professor of psychological studies in education and learning at Stanford University, "we almost need a trauma center to take care of this problem, it's that serious for kids that can't read...It's the number-one factor standing in the way of their graduating" (Manzo-Kennedy). Given the importance of literacy, this article provides a story of how a high school media specialist on the east coast sought to collaborate with …

Self-Efficacy Of College Intermediate French Students: Relation To Achievement And Motivation, Nicole A. Mills, Frank Pajares, Carol Herron

Nicole A Mills

The objective of this investigation was to examine the influence of self-efficacy and other motivational self-beliefs on the achievement of college intermediate French students (N = 303). Self-efficacy for self-regulation was a stronger predictor of intermediate French language achievement than were self-efficacy to obtain grades in French, French anxiety in reading and listening, and French learning self-concept. Students who perceived themselves as capable of using effective metacognitive strategies to monitor their academic work time effectively were more apt to experience academic success in intermediate French. Female students reported greater self-efficacy for self-regulation, interest, value, and enjoyment in learning about both …

Mainstreaming And Integrating The Substance And Spectacle Of Scholar-Baller: A New Game Plan For The Ncaa, Higher Education And Society, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

The purpose of this chapter is to theoretically and empirically capture the cultural divide between education and sport and entertainment in American society. The NCAA Academic Reform Movement has evolved from holding individuals accountable to presently monitoring institutions and their retention and graduation success of college student athletes. This movement will require a deeper examination of how culture influences academic attitudes and lifelong learning. Based on empirical data from different methodologies, this chapter proposes that student athletes; especially African American males, are often stereotyped with few strategies to empower their academic and athletic identities. The Scholar-Baller Paradigm is designed to …

The Cultural Approaches To Multiculturalism: Education Policy And Its Implications In Culture, Linda Margaret Broughton Aug 2007

The Cultural Approaches To Multiculturalism: Education Policy And Its Implications In Culture, Linda Margaret Broughton

Linda Margaret Broughton

The purpose of this discussion is to analyse three different European states in their approaches to education policy and culture. Each example of a national policy approach is considered separately, as an individual container (or thimble) with a distinct approach to policymaking and culture that is reflected through structure and content. At the same time, the discussion will analyse the comparative advantages of the separate systems in order to illustrate how one approach may address an issue that is problematic in another approach. The purpose of this discourse is to illustrate how a more comprehensive approach to culture in education …

Torsional Waveguide Density Sensor, Radek Glaser Aug 2007

Torsional Waveguide Density Sensor, Radek Glaser

Radek Glaser

As a part of National Science Foundation-Research for Undergraduates program, a torsional wave guide density sensor has been investigated in the Laboratory of Surface Science and Technology at the University Of Maine. This simple design uses torsional piezo-electric transducers to generate torsional mode in a long circular rod.
The non-circular portion of the wave guide allows for the measurement of different properties of fluids. Theory is presented from energy balance perspective and from the acoustic wave propagation approach. A series of experiments have been conducted with variety of liquids and gases. Several relationships have been verified and also new have …

Financial Portfolio Strategy: Application To College Of Southwest, Grace S. Thomson Aug 2007

Financial Portfolio Strategy: Application To College Of Southwest, Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

Financial Portfolio Strategy Creating value in the organization is the cornerstone of business activity. Value-creation is a concept that has evolved for the past fifty years, stimulating the generation of theories, techniques, models and institutions (Slater and Zwirlein, 1996). Financial markets have developed in response to the dynamic corporate activity, providing different options of financing and investment. Financial decision-making at the executive level becomes critical in the creation of wealth in the organization, and the financial strategies designed by the Top Management Team (TMT) are expected to seek beyond profit maximization (Lankau et al, 2007; Myers, 2001). However, there are …

Navigating Religious Rights Of Teachers And Students, Samuel J. Smith Aug 2007

Navigating Religious Rights Of Teachers And Students, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

Despite the notion that First Amendment rights are established, valued, and respected in the United States, there continues to be confusion in public schools that leads to legal conflict over issues associated with freedoms of speech and expression, especially as they relate to religious issues. Navigating the religious rights of teachers and students can be a precarious undertaking, as administrators’ decisions regarding the expression of religious beliefs continue to be highlighted in the media and many times are resolved in the court system at great expense to school districts. The purpose of this paper is to clarify religious rights issues …

This insightful and innovative PDW will 1) describe some of the results of a qualitative research study on the leadership development of ten women university presidents, and 2) provide participants with an opportunity to engage in self-analysis and personal reflection. "Leadership" will be broadly framed as leading from a formal position (e.g., president, VP, dean, associate dean, department chair, or committee chair) as well as influencing without an official title or formal authority; therefore, conference attendees interested in influencing change at any level in higher education would benefit.
