Developing The Accredited Postgraduate Assessment Program For Fellowship Of The Australian College Of Rural And Remote Medicine, Janie Smith, David Prideaux, C Wolfe, T Wilkinson, Tarun Sengupta, D Dewitt, Paul Worley, Richard Hays, Marita Cowie

Janie Smith

Introduction: Accreditation of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) as a standards and training provider, by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) in 2007, is the first time in the world that a peak professional organisation for rural and remote medical education has been formally recognised. As a consequence, the Australian Government provided rural and remote medicine with formal recognition under Medicare as a generalist discipline. This accreditation was based on the ability of ACRRM to meet the AMC’s guidelines for its training and assessment program. Methods: The methodology was a six-step process that included: developing an assessment …

The Cultural Approaches To Multiculturalism: Education Policy And Its Implications In Culture, Linda Margaret Broughton Aug 2007

The Cultural Approaches To Multiculturalism: Education Policy And Its Implications In Culture, Linda Margaret Broughton

Linda Margaret Broughton

The purpose of this discussion is to analyse three different European states in their approaches to education policy and culture. Each example of a national policy approach is considered separately, as an individual container (or thimble) with a distinct approach to policymaking and culture that is reflected through structure and content. At the same time, the discussion will analyse the comparative advantages of the separate systems in order to illustrate how one approach may address an issue that is problematic in another approach. The purpose of this discourse is to illustrate how a more comprehensive approach to culture in education …

Navigating Religious Rights Of Teachers And Students, Samuel J. Smith Aug 2007

Navigating Religious Rights Of Teachers And Students, Samuel J. Smith

Samuel James Smith

Despite the notion that First Amendment rights are established, valued, and respected in the United States, there continues to be confusion in public schools that leads to legal conflict over issues associated with freedoms of speech and expression, especially as they relate to religious issues. Navigating the religious rights of teachers and students can be a precarious undertaking, as administrators’ decisions regarding the expression of religious beliefs continue to be highlighted in the media and many times are resolved in the court system at great expense to school districts. The purpose of this paper is to clarify religious rights issues …

Alls Survey Update : Initial Messages Regarding Numeracy, Dave Tout Jun 2007

Alls Survey Update : Initial Messages Regarding Numeracy, Dave Tout

David (Dave) Tout

In the initial analysis and results coming out from the first wave of the 2003 Adult Literacy and Lifeskills Survey (ALLS) countries, the data seem to be indicating that numeracy plays a more important role in economic returns for individuals than do prose or document literacy, and seem to confirm that men outperform women in the area of numeracy and mathematics. Some of the outcomes stemming from the results that will be of interest when the Australian results are released late in 2007 include: the overlap between respondents' abilities in literacy and numeracy was lower than expected; early school leavers …

Reflections On Educational Administration, Arthur Lang Jun 2007

Reflections On Educational Administration, Arthur Lang

Arthur Lang

I began my graduate studies in the spring, 2005 and finished in spring, 2007. Over those two and a half years, I have transformed my view of education. I have developed a vision and implemented changes in my own instruction. I learned what educators mean by change and have embraced its benefits. I realized that the school is not an isolated institution, but must seek outside support and enlist all members of the community. Most importantly, I learned that principals are not managers, but instructional leaders who lead by doing.

Correlation Of Hspa Scores With Lhs Math And English Courses, Arthur Lang

Arthur Lang

The No Child Left Behind Act [NCLB] mandates testing of all high school students in reading, mathematics and science. Schools that do not make progress in test scores will be subject to punitive and remedial actions. Schools have responded to the high stakes requirements by modifying the traditional curriculum. The purpose of this study is to determine how achievement measure by grade point earned in mathematics and language arts courses correlates to proficiency on the New Jersey High School proficiency Assessment (HSPA). Since data is not yet available the Science assessment, it has been left out of this study. A …

A Review Of Transformational Leadership Models And Its Linkage To The Scholarship/Practice/Leadership Model, Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

The success of organizations is the result of a combination of factors: financial, material and technological resources, logistics, and human capital.

These factors are put together to achieve the desired goals consistent with the corporate mission. In this context, firms are in constant seeking of the best individuals who will lead and carry out this journey to success. These individuals are expected to have special characteristics that ensure that their actions will turn out into positive results for the organization. These extraordinary individuals are the leaders.

This document will present a discussion of four leadership theories, their similarities and differences …

Selecting Open Source Software For Use In Schools, Kathryn Moyle Dec 2006

Selecting Open Source Software For Use In Schools, Kathryn Moyle

Professor Kathryn Moyle

Schools are places where the choices made about computing technologies not only reflect their technical requirements but also reflect the philosophical priorities directing those choices. Schools can deploy a startling range of software (i.e., operating systems, databases, office productivity software, and applications software) for specifc teaching and learning purposes. Applications software deployed in schools must be suitable for use by students who are young and often have limited reading and fine motor skills. Back-end software must be robust enough to handle hundreds and sometimes thousands of users concurrently. One issue that faces schools interested in deploying open source software is …

Video-Based Reseach Made "Easy" Methodological Lessons Learned From The Timms Video Studies, Jennifer Jacobs, Hilary Hollingsworth, Karen Givvin Dec 2006

Video-Based Reseach Made "Easy" Methodological Lessons Learned From The Timms Video Studies, Jennifer Jacobs, Hilary Hollingsworth, Karen Givvin

Dr Hilary Hollingsworth

In this article, the authors share some of the methodological lessons learned from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 1995 and TIMSS 1999 Video Studies. They focus on their experiences overseeing these large-scale, video-based, cross-national surveys of teaching. The article documents some of the progress the authors made, as well as some of the obstacles they encountered. The authors hope that the ideas shared here help prevent possible missteps, enhance the quality of projects, and encourage researchers to advance the use of video as a methodology.

Researching ‘What Works’ In Boys Education: Teachers Take The Lead, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young, Greg Neal Dec 2006

Researching ‘What Works’ In Boys Education: Teachers Take The Lead, Elizabeth Hartnell-Young, Greg Neal

Dr Elizabeth Hartnell-Young

Accountability in education is often effected through mandated standards for curriculum, teacher performance and student outcomes at national or state levels, and this has increasingly occurred in Australia over the past decade. In order to make decisions regarding the achievement of these standards, evidence must be collected from sample sites or segments of the relevant populations. Funding is often linked to accountability, through reward mechanisms ‘after the event’ or through grants made a priori and requiring comprehensive reports. The evidence base is large-scale, but can lack detail. In conjunction with these levers for schools to act on current issues, their …

The Influence Of Equating Methodology On Reported Trends In Pisa, Eveline Gebhardt, Ray Adams Dec 2006

The Influence Of Equating Methodology On Reported Trends In Pisa, Eveline Gebhardt, Ray Adams

Prof Ray Adams

In 2005 PISA published trend indicators that compared the results of PISA 2000 and PISA 2003. This paper explores the extent to which the outcomes of these trend analyses are sensitive to the choice of test equating methodologies, the choice of regression models and the choice of linking items. To establish trends, PISA equated its 2000 and 2003 tests using a methodology based on Rasch Modelling that involved estimating linear transformations that mapped 2003 Rasch-scaled scores to the previously established PISA 2000 Rasch-scaled scores. This paper compares the outcomes of this approach with an alternative, which involves the joint Rasch …

The Transformation To A Learner-Centered Community As A Result Of University-Wide Assessment, Michele Kieke, Karen Moroz, Amy Gort Dec 2006

The Transformation To A Learner-Centered Community As A Result Of University-Wide Assessment, Michele Kieke, Karen Moroz, Amy Gort

Karen Moroz

Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to describe the way(s) in which the introduction of systematic outcomes assessment throughout a university has begun to transform its academic culture.

Design/methodology/approach
The college is incrementally introducing system‐supported evaluation of student work. It began with general education, working with interdisciplinary faculty committees to define common learning outcomes with shared rubrics, and using these in all courses designated as general education. The use of this approach is now expanding into the majors and specific programs.

Findings
The paper finds that the process by which general education and program outcomes and rubrics have been …

The Impact Of Differential Investment Of Student Effort On The Outcomes Of International Studies, J Butler, Ray Adams Dec 2006

The Impact Of Differential Investment Of Student Effort On The Outcomes Of International Studies, J Butler, Ray Adams

Prof Ray Adams

International comparative assessments of student achievement, such as Trends in Mathematics and Science (TIMSS) and Programme for International Student Achievement (PISA) are becoming increasingly important in the development of evidence-based education policy. The potentially far-reaching influence of such studies underscores the need for these assessments to be valid and reliable. In education, increasing recognition is being given to motivational factors which impact on student learning. This research considers a possible threat to the validity of such studies by investigating the influence the amount of effort invested by test-takers has on their outcomes. Reassuringly, it is found that the reported expenditure …

Corruption And Policy Implementation In The Philippines: A Comparative Analysis Of The Teacher Training And Textbook Delivery Programmes, Vicente C. Reyes Jr Dec 2006

Corruption And Policy Implementation In The Philippines: A Comparative Analysis Of The Teacher Training And Textbook Delivery Programmes, Vicente C. Reyes Jr

Dr. Vicente C Reyes Jr

Corruption is a perennial obstacle to the Philippines’ pursuit of development. The Department of Education (DepEd) is considered to be one of the most corrupt agencies in the Philippines. However, there are two DepEd programmes with different levels of effectiveness in controlling corruption. The Textbook Delivery Programme has been ineffective while the Programme on Basic Education has been successful. The article explains the different levels of implementing these programmes by using local perspectives via the ‘narratives of implementation actors’. Apart from providing insights on the challenges facing the evolving educational bureaucracy in the Philippines, this article also demonstrates the utility …
