This dissertation study explored the campus climate of Penn State University for religious, secular, and spiritual identities through use of Strange and Banning’s Educating by Design theoretical framework. Performance-based funding (PBF) is an important component of many states’ higher education funding policies. A majority of U.S. states hold their public colleges accountable through the establishment of PBF indicators designed to boost student success. This study used a web-based questionnaire to explore the effects of social and cultural capital, and community college personnel such as faculty, counselors, and other support services on the degree aspirations, transfer intentions, and perceived ability to navigate the upward transfer process of California community college hospitality management students to a four-year educational institution. The questionnaire was sent to a geographically stratified statewide sample of Latino and non-Latino California community college hospitality management students (n=2,300) in eight community college hospitality management programs throughout California.

First-generation students have received considerable attention though the definitions and operationalizations used vary. Prior studies used dichotomous groups, treating students whose parents had little or no college education as homogenous in terms of first-year experiences and persistence. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine superintendent instructional leadership in the context of the Iowa Teacher Leadership and Compensation System (TLCS). The study included interviews of 15 Iowa superintendents who were involved in the application and initial implementation of the Iowa TLCS in their districts. The dissertation examines the NOE knowledge and teaching practices of participants in a research project aimed at supporting science and engineering instruction in grades 3-5. This dissertation responds to two aspects of the homesickness literature: its characterization as a mental health concern, and its lack of empirical attention in the United States. Regrettably, every semester a number of students neglect to consult their professional or faculty advisor, instead choosing to self-advise or take the advice of peers. Consequently, many of these students flounder and the resulting cost (in terms of academic progress, degree attainment, pride in accomplishment, employability, and contribution to society) to the students, their families, the institution, and society is devastating.
