Worldview, Science And The Understanding Of Nature, William W. Cobern Jan 2005

Worldview, Science And The Understanding Of Nature, William W. Cobern

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

I am drawn to Nature because I see in Nature the handwork of God and I wonder what are our responsibilities as stewards of Nature? Being of a scientific bent, I wonder how Nature works? I wonder how Nature came to be? In other words, my thoughts– my everyday thoughts– about Nature are rooted in deep, fundamental beliefs that I hold about my life and the world in which I live, that is, my worldview. Nature of course is the traditional domain in which the “natural” sciences operate, but how we understand science and Nature is rooted in our worldview. …

Chapter 5: Pete Mentoring As A Mosaic, Suzan F. Ayers, Linda L. Griffin Jan 2005

Chapter 5: Pete Mentoring As A Mosaic, Suzan F. Ayers, Linda L. Griffin

Human Performance and Health Education Faculty Research

Good mentoring is not an easy process. From the research literature on mentoring, people know that there are critical factors that affect the mentoring relationship and process: the selection of mentors, whether or not mentors and proteges are assigned, how formal or informal the relationship is, how mentors might or might not be rewarded for their contribution, and whether professionals can find the time for mentoring (Little, 1990; Smith & Ingersoll, 2004). People also know that effective mentors possess rich and sophisticated content, curricular, and pedagogical knowledge, and they also have strong communication skills that can serve to support the …

Chapter 1: Introduction—The Roles And Process Of Mentoring, Linda L. Griffin, Suzan F. Ayers Jan 2005

Chapter 1: Introduction—The Roles And Process Of Mentoring, Linda L. Griffin, Suzan F. Ayers

Human Performance and Health Education Faculty Research

In this monograph we bring together three different studies about mentoring across the physical education profession. Throughout this issue we use the terms mentor and protégé to describe the individuals involved in mentoring relationships. Generally, mentors are wise and trusted guides and advisors, and protégés are the people who receive career support, protection, and advocacy. Given the complex and challenging nature of educatorsʼ work, the notion that educators in various settings and career paths should have mentors to guide them through skill development and workplace management has become increasingly accepted. Mentoring has generally been perceived as a positive relationship that …

Comparison Effects Of Tape And The Mcdavid Ultra Brace In Limiting The Amount And Rate Of Ankle Inversion, Leah M. Pataki

Masters Theses

The ankle joint is among one of the most common sites for injury, accounting for 86% of all injuries. Commonly, athletic tape or an ankle brace is used to prevent or protect ankle injuries from occurring and/or re-occurring. The purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of athletic tape and the McDavid Ultra brace in limiting the amount and rate of ankle inversion when using dynamic ankle inversion. Subjects (6=Males, 12=Females) completed ten trials on an inversion platform under the following conditions: no-tape (control) and two bracing conditions (athletic tape and McDavid Ultra Brace). A 2 x 3 …

Assessing The Metacognitive Dimensions Of Retrospective Miscue Analysis Through Discourse Analysis, Wendy L. Black Dec 2004

Assessing The Metacognitive Dimensions Of Retrospective Miscue Analysis Through Discourse Analysis, Wendy L. Black

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study investigates the manner in which retrospective miscue analysis involves metacognition by analyzing the discourse of weekly retrospective miscue analysis (RMA) sessions conducted with a fourth grade reader over five months. A preliminary structural discourse analysis of the sessions reveals several procedural and format features of the sessions. Each session more or less involves the same broad procedures: a) establishing the purpose and setting the agenda; b) discussing the individual miscues; and c) reflecting on reading or what was learned in the session. Discourse analysis of participants, discussions, and reflections reveals discourse moves that involve metacognitive experiences producing metacognitive …

Making A Cyber Literacy Connection From The Storage Room To The College Room, Paula Boxie Dec 2004

Making A Cyber Literacy Connection From The Storage Room To The College Room, Paula Boxie

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

What roles can colleges and universities play in serving the many young adults whom our public school systems fail? This article sheds light on how one university was able to make a literacy connection with students attending an Alternative High School (AHS). This connection enabled AHS students and teacher candidates to effectively carry out a writing project in cyberspace. Data indicated that as the AHS students worked closely with their mentors, they became more aware of literacy strategies they needed to construct meaning and were able to recognize and appreciate quality writing. Thus, creating more partner-ships between higher institutions and …

Examining And Predicting College Students' Reading Intentions And Behaviors: An Application Of The Theory Of Reasoned Action, Lydia Burak Dec 2004

Examining And Predicting College Students' Reading Intentions And Behaviors: An Application Of The Theory Of Reasoned Action, Lydia Burak

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study examined the recreational reading attitudes, intentions, and behaviors of college students. The theory of reasoned action provided the framework for the investigation and prediction of the students' intentions and behaviors. Two hundred and one students completed questionnaires developed according to the guidelines for the construction of standard theory of reasoned action questionnaires. The instrument assessed students' attitudes, outcome beliefs, subjective norms, and normative beliefs, as well as intentions and behaviors regarding recreational reading. The constructs of the theory explained 35-38 percent of the variance in students' intentions. Attitudes toward recreational reading provided the strongest and most significant contributions.

Teachers' Beliefs And Practices Of Vocabulary Instruction With Social Studies Textbooks In Grades 4-8, Wanda B. Hedrick, Janis M. Harmon, Philip M. Linerode Dec 2004

Teachers' Beliefs And Practices Of Vocabulary Instruction With Social Studies Textbooks In Grades 4-8, Wanda B. Hedrick, Janis M. Harmon, Philip M. Linerode

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This investigation focused on the vocabulary beliefs and instructional practices of social studies teachers in intermediate and middle school grades as well as their use of teachers' manuals. Using a self-reporting survey to measure these beliefs and practices, we found some discrepancy between what teachers believe about vocabulary learning and their actual instructional practices for supporting vocabulary in teaching social studies. While their reported beliefs appear to mirror what is currently accepted as effective vocabulary instruction, their reported practices reflect more traditional notions like those found in many social studies textbook manuals. While all teachers surveyed held many beliefs and …

The Study Of Nontraditional Student Satisfaction With Academic Support Services Offered At Western Michigan University, Natalie Morton Dec 2004

The Study Of Nontraditional Student Satisfaction With Academic Support Services Offered At Western Michigan University, Natalie Morton

Dissertations

This study examines the impact from the adaptation of lean manufacturing strategies on key external financial performance measures as reported by a number of management accounting methods. The research is not concerned with creating a justification for lean manufacturing strategies but rather it evaluates the inadequacies of standard financial reporting methods to accurately reflect operational improvements possible in the key performance measures through the early stages of a lean program.

ProModel simulation software is used in conjunction with Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic to create a simulated repetitive manufacturing environment and production planning and control system. The study examines the …

A Survey Of Lightning Safety Policy In Selected High Schools, Katie Groszek Dec 2004

A Survey Of Lightning Safety Policy In Selected High Schools, Katie Groszek

Masters Theses

Our research will entail a survey of high school certified athletic trainers in the Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association (District 4) of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) on lightning safety policy. The NATA has written a position statement (Walsh, 2000) on lightning safety to educate athletic trainers and other individuals on the dangers of lightning and safety guidelines to follow. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) also has lightning safety guidelines for the schools it governs. Despite the recommendations of the NAT A and NCAA, there has been a demonstrated lack of lightning safety policy. The purpose of this …

Masters Theses

Located in the southwestern corner of the state in Berrien County, the city of Benton Harbor, Michigan rests along the shores of Lake Michigan, in the heart of the Fruit Belt, and near the St. Joseph River. Not until the early 1940s did a significant number of black migrants arrive from the South and larger metropolitan areas in the North to take advantage of a booming a wartime economy, higher paying jobs, and better living conditions. The growing black presence greatly altered the social, political, cultural, and economic structure of Benton Harbor. By the late 1950s and early 1960s the …

Underrepresented Doctoral Students: The Cultural And Institutional Barriers That Hinder Their Ability To Graduate, Nancy Greer-Williams Dec 2004

Underrepresented Doctoral Students: The Cultural And Institutional Barriers That Hinder Their Ability To Graduate, Nancy Greer-Williams

Dissertations

African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian doctoral students continue to have attrition rates substantially higher than their White counterparts (Lovitts, 2001). Attrition was defined as the act of weakening or exhausting by constant harassment, abuse, or attack (Merriam-Webster, 2004). Research todate on this topic has focused on causes and barriers that can be attributed to mainstream groups, not on particular cultural barriers that may adversely affectdoctoral persistence among underrepresented groups. This study collected the lived experiences of these students at three separate university settings and turned them into conceptualized statements in an effort to understand the meaning of their experiences …

A Superintendent's Guide To A Successful Bond Proposal, Scott D. Mollenberndt Dec 2004

A Superintendent's Guide To A Successful Bond Proposal, Scott D. Mollenberndt

Masters Theses

For most school districts it has become increasingly difficult to gain voter support for bond referendums. In addition, there is little information available for the superintendent and board of education to reference when considering a bond campaign in their community.

In response to these concerns, "A Superintendent's Guide to a Successful Bond Proposal" was developed to provide campaign strategies, timelines and a sequential list of events for the superintendent to consider. Examples of campaign strategies employed by the Edwardsburg Public Schools, Edwardsburg, Michigan during their successful bond referendum are included as appendices throughout the guidebook.

Through this research, seven essential …

Effectiveness Of Teaching Modalities For Pre-College Level Mathematics Courses, Dorothy Latuszek Dec 2004

Effectiveness Of Teaching Modalities For Pre-College Level Mathematics Courses, Dorothy Latuszek

Dissertations

College educators are challenged with providing students with choices of teaching modalities that facilitate student achievement and success at a time when students are also seeking flexible scheduling and accommodation of their differing learning styles. This is certainly the case for college students who need to demonstrate proficiency for the content in pre-college level mathematics courses prior to enrolling in college-level mathematics courses. The term "pre-college level" is defined as courses in reading, writing, and mathematics for college students lacking those skills necessary to perform college-levelcoursework at two- or four-year college institutions (Parsad & Lewis, 2003).

Do certain teaching modalities …
