Using Picture Books As A Vehicle To Teach Young Children About Social Justice, Martha Taylor Dever, B. Sorenson, J. Brodrick Jan 2005

Using Picture Books As A Vehicle To Teach Young Children About Social Justice, Martha Taylor Dever, B. Sorenson, J. Brodrick

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Most teachers and administrators have witnessed children using a derogatory reference to a group of people as a put down. Put downs usually reference non-mainstream groups who are different in ethnicity, gender, religion, ability, sexual orientation, class, or appearance. Hurtful name calling is but one example of how children express prejudiced beliefs and attitudes toward particular groups of people; non-mainstream children are also often excluded by their peers from activities and social events. Teachers of young children have the challenging task to help eradicate prejudice and discrimination by teaching about social justice. The purpose of this article is to share …

An Interactive Model To Foster Family Literacy, L. Burningham, Martha Taylor Dever

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

A brief narrative description of the journal article, document, or resource. Children whose homes are filled with books, whose parents read to them, and who have begun to understand the reading process have higher levels of reading skills and knowledge when they enter kindergarten than children who do not have such rich literacy experiences before entering school. This article describes a family literacy project developed and funded by a state university, the state office of education, and a large, urban school district. The project integrates an early childhood literacy program with a strong focus on education for parents who may …

Using Disciplinary Literacies To Enhance Adolescents’ Engineering Design Activity, Amy Wilson-Lopez, Emma Smith, Daniel L. Householder May 2004

Using Disciplinary Literacies To Enhance Adolescents’ Engineering Design Activity, Amy Wilson-Lopez, Emma Smith, Daniel L. Householder

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This comparative case study describes the literacy practices of two groups of adolescents as they sought to solve authentic problems through engineering design processes. Three types of data were collected as the groups addressed these problems: video- and audio-recordings of their conversations; adolescent-generated products; and pre- and post-challenge interviews. The authors used existing coding schemes of engineering design activity to identify when the adolescents enacted different stages of engineering design, as well as a modified form of constant comparative analysis to identify the literacy practices that corresponded with each stage. The analysis indicates that applications of literacy practices at each …

Controlling Choice: Teachers, Students, And Manipulatives In Mathematics Classrooms, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, M. Gail Jones

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This research study examines the instructional practices of 10 middle grades teachers related to their use of manipulatives in teaching mathematics and their control of mathematics tools during instruction. Through 40 observations of teaching, 30 interviews, and an examination of 67 written documents (including teachers' plans and records), profiles were developed that describe how teachers used and controlled manipulatives during instruction. Results showed that teachers used a variety of manipulatives and other mathematics tools over the course of the year-long study. Teachers reported using a mathematics tool (manipulative, calculator, or measuring device) in 70% of their lessons, and this self-report …

Learning To Question: Categories Of Questioning Used By Preservice Teachers During Diagnostic Mathematics Interviews, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, Elizabeth Milewicz

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Developing appropriate questioning techniques is an important part of mathematics teaching and assessment. This study examined the questioning strategies used by 48 preservice teachers during one-on-one diagnostic mathematics interviews with children. Each participant conducted an audiotaped interview with one child, followed by an analysis and reflection of the interview. Data were analyzed to develop general categories of questions used by the preservice teachers. These categories included: 1) checklisting, 2) instructing rather than assessing, and 3) probing and follow-up questions. The analyses and reflections completed by preservice teachers indicated that using the diagnostic interview format allowed them to recognize and reflect …

Are We Having Fun Yet? How Teachers Use Manipulatives To Teach Mathematics, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham Jan 2001

Are We Having Fun Yet? How Teachers Use Manipulatives To Teach Mathematics, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

Teachers often comment that using manipulatives to teach mathematics is ‘fun!’ Embedded in the word ‘fun’ are important notions about how and why teachers use manipulatives in the teaching of mathematics. Over the course of one academic year, this study examined 10 middle grades teachers’ uses of manipulatives for teaching mathematics using interviews and observations to explore how and why the teachers used the manipulatives as they did. An examination of the participants’ statements and behaviors indicated that using manipulatives was little more than a diversion in classrooms where teachers were not able to represent mathematics concepts themselves. The teachers …

Tools For Cognition: Student Free Access To Manipulative Materials In Controlversus Autonomy-Oriented Middle Grades Teachers’ Classrooms, Patricia S. Moyer-Packenham, Gail M. Jones

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

This study investigated how middle grades students provided with free access to manipulative materials use these mathematical tools in classrooms where their teachers are identified as Control-Oriented and Autonomy-Oriented. Also of interest in this investigation was how Control-Oriented and Autonomy-Oriented teachers administered the free access treatment in their classrooms. A Pre -- Post -1 Post -2 design was used with two treatments. During Treatment 1, teachers used the manipulatives for mathematics instruction using the strategies learned in the summer professional development workshop. During Treatment 2, teachers provided students with free access to the manipulative materials. Results indicated teachers' control orientations--control …

The Learning Spiral: Taking The Lead From How Young Children Learn, Martha Taylor Dever

Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications

The questions at right, asked by 2nd-graders, launch a scientific inquiry about owls. As the 7-year-olds investigate stuffed owl specimens, they express their need to know. Some children continue to stroke the owls' feathers, touch a sharp claw, and ask questions about the mouth, while others immediately turn to printed materials to clarify their questions. This new experience with owls ignites the children's sense of wonder, and the intrinsically motivated scientific inquiry begins.
