The New York Academy of Science recently announced a suspension of its annual Art of Science Competition this year. The decision was a result of budget cutbacks in the National Science Foundation (a major supporter of the program) and an unexpected phasing-out of a multi-year grant from Dow Chemical U.S.A. (the competition's major corporate sponsor since 1988).

Ideas and approaches central to Science/Technology/Society (STS) have been introduced via the Chautauqua program in classrooms of nearly 1,000 Iowa teachers of grades 4 through 9 since 1985-86. Assessment of the results of STS instruction has been central to the effort supported by the National Science Teachers Association, the Iowa Utility Association, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the University of Iowa. Some of the emerging results demonstrate the advantages of an STS focus for school science.

Many students do not picture themselves in science-related careers primarily because they are not informed about the opportunities available and the secondary and post-secondary education required for those jobs. The activity explained in this article was developed at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics by the authors for SPICA Activities. SPICA is the acronym for the Support Program for Instructional Competency in Astronomy and is funded by the National Science Foundation. Thirty-three astronomy and science educators were selected from throughout the United States to be involved in the three-week SPICA astronomy education workshop during August 1989.

Iowa agriculture benefits from two important natural resources, the rich soils that blanket the landscape and sufficient precipitation, in most years, to produce large crop yields. While precipitation is essential to farmers, many of Iowa's soils, especially in the northcentral part of the state, are poorly drained and at times contain excess water that can hinder field operations or ruin crops. In these areas, farm fields are often artificially drained by buried tile lines leading to ditches or to streams. Another, but less common, method is the agricultural drainage well, a shaft which funnels excess water directly underground. The upper …
