A Logico-Structural, Worldview Analysis Of The Interrelationship Between Science Interest, Gender, And Concept Of Nature, William W. Cobern, Jane E. Ellington, Daniel M. Schores

Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project

A few years ago I was speaking with a distinguished professor of science explaining to him my concern for the low level of science interest among school level students. I remarked that in my view a major contributor to this lack of interest was the methodology used to teach science. Students forsake science because their own orientation to the world does not allow them to appreciate science as it is typically taught (Cobern, 1989a). The professor immediately added to my sentence "and believed by the vast majority of qualified practitioners." He went on to say that this dropping away of …

Analise Quantitativa Do Currículo Escolar [Quantitative Analysis Of The School Curriculum], Karl M. Lorenz Jan 1990

Analise Quantitativa Do Currículo Escolar [Quantitative Analysis Of The School Curriculum], Karl M. Lorenz

Karl M Lorenz

A Cooperative Approach To Writing A Curriculum Guide For Mathematics, Sara Nilson Bos Jan 1990

A Cooperative Approach To Writing A Curriculum Guide For Mathematics, Sara Nilson Bos

All Graduate Projects

This project involved writing a curriculum guide for grades kindergarten through six in the area of mathematics. This guide was developed using a cooperative approach including small groups of teachers representing several grade levels, as well as, the entire teaching staff. The process of developing the guide was important to this study as was the mathematics guide itself. Teachers were involved in selection of a mathematics curriculum, implementing the curriculum, evaluating and adapting the curriculum after one year of use, and writing the guide to accompany the program.

The Enhancement Of Earth Science Laboratories And Activities Through Inquiry, Discovery And Hands-On Methods, Diane Hinchliff Hesse Jan 1990

The Enhancement Of Earth Science Laboratories And Activities Through Inquiry, Discovery And Hands-On Methods, Diane Hinchliff Hesse

All Graduate Projects

The central objective of this project is to enhance the middle school eighthgrade Earth Science curriculum by developing or adapting existing laboratory activities to model hands-on, inquiry, and discovery learning methods. These laboratory activities are designed to encourage independent student-centered learning as opposed to teacher-centered and directed activities.

The project also explored the nature of the science laboratory as it exists in classrooms today and how it can be improved through an understanding of the nature and process of science.

1989-90 Annual Report, Illinois' Investment, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy Jan 1990

1989-90 Annual Report, Illinois' Investment, Illinois Mathematics And Science Academy

Annual Reports

In many ways, the 1989-90 school year at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy can best be described as a year of re-creation. Having successfully met the challenges of the start-up years (1986-1989), our fourth school year became a time for thoughtful reflection, refocus and renewal. Within the context of strategic planning, we began to examine our values and beliefs, to clarify our mission and aspirations, and to develop bold, innovative strategies for achieving our institutional objectives.

The Need For Creativity In The Science Classroom, Lowell Wiele Jan 1990

The Need For Creativity In The Science Classroom, Lowell Wiele

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

To recognize the need for creativity in the classroom as one of the growing concerns in the educational community today is not difficult. When the various teaching methods in science are evaluated, the highly pronounced need for more creativity in science instruction is evident. Few teachers, it seems, experiment actively with teaching techniques and curriculum materials. Most find what works for them and stick with it, and, often, this means teaching science as a lecture course (with some group discussion and a few laboratory experiences). Beginning teachers tend to imitate the persons they considered to have been their best teachers. …
