Chinese international students comprise the largest group of international students in U.S. universities. To better support international students to be successful in international higher education, Chinese students’ reading comprehension in English deserves attention. Using a qualitative research design, this study analyzed Chinese international students’ perceptions about their English reading comprehension in academic literacy, and how exposure to an English-speaking environment contributed to their reading comprehension development. Previous research has shown that mathematical self-efficacy is positively correlated with mathematical achievement. However, in a high school classroom setting, teachers’ effectiveness varies based on experience, education, and how they incorporate certain pedagogical practices. The Modern Classroom Project was designed to have teachers integrate self-paced learning, mastery-based learning, metacognition, and blended instructions all within one classroom; with an emphasis placed on allowing students the opportunity to understand a particular skill before attempting the next skill. Discovering what components of the Modern Classroom Project enhances student’s self-efficacy score, and mathematical achievement was the focus of the study.

Collaborative learning has been shown to improve student learning and performance; however, the influence of collaboration has not yet been examined in the context of an online introductory statistics course. Often the influence of collaborative learning is measured using only one outcome variable, typically course achievement. This study will contribute a more thorough examination of the influence collaboration has on student learning by operationalizing the learning construct with the use of multiple measures: academic performance, perceived learning, and growth in statistical knowledge. In addition, this study will provide a model for incorporating collaborative learning in an asynchronous online course.

Children that are minimally verbal often lack same- or near-age peer interaction outside of the home environment. This study attempted to bridge that gap by training older siblings of minimally verbal children to use interaction strategies during play sessions. Through this, researchers were able to examine both the fidelity of use of the trained interaction strategies as well as their effect of the younger siblings’ communication skills.

Every year a significant number of college students stop out of college and fail to persist and complete their degree. First-generation college students are more likely to exit college without a degree than continuing-generation students. The purpose of this quantitative, archival, nonexperimental study was to explore how first-generation college student demographic, academic background, college academic, and student engagement factors were related to and predict first-year to second-year retention at a mid-sized, public regional university. Multilingual learners are the fastest growing student population in US public schools. The purpose of this critical multiple case study was to discover three music teachers’ and one Multilingual Learner resource teacher’s perspectives on the strengths and areas of growth in pedagogies for teaching Multilingual Learners in choral music ensembles. Common areas of strength included: student-centered learning, culturally responsive teaching, and positive classroom environment. Common areas of growth were: multilingual teaching strategies, knowledge of diverse repertoire, community and culture, and multilingual learner empowerment.

This is an exploratory study of undergraduate social work education at a private faith-based university. The university offers both online and residential program options. The purpose of the study was to examine the influence of distance education and program option on the educational outcomes of graduates in a newly developed social work program. The program started in 2015 with its first graduating class in 2017. The sample (N = 262) consists of students graduating in 2017, 2018, and 2019. This mixed-methods action research study examines the effect of communities of practice on the development of home-centered gospel learning activities from the perspective of twelve release-time Seminary teachers for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from October—December 2021. Beginning in 2019, leaders of Seminaries and Institutes began to implement a Churchwide initiative to encourage home-centered, Church-supported gospel learning. This research investigates instructional narrative interventions for transformative learning among high orality reliant peoples. Two research questions asked: “Does an oral strategy of radio drama in a participatory environment lead to significant changes in knowledge and beliefs,” with a hypothesis stating there would be significant positive changes; and “When listeners experience narrative transport can it affect receptivity leading to knowledge and belief change,” and the hypothesis stated that narrative transport would correlate to higher positive responses. Background: Students with complex communication needs (CCN) rely on the use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to support their communication; however, many students are leaving high school without an effective form of communication. To build capacity and increase school professionals’ knowledge and self-efficacy in AAC, this thesis used an adaptation of Project ECHO (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes) for use with AAC.

Methods: Using a post then pre-retrospective survey, participants self-reported changes in knowledge, confidence, and overall satisfaction with ECHO sessions. Students need specific knowledge, skills, and mindsets to complete coursework, critically analyze research, and write and defend a research dissertation. Despite a mutual commitment to academic achievement and graduation by faculty and students, attrition in doctoral programs remains high. This rate is even higher for those in online programs. The purpose of this study was to increase initiations of communication for high school students with moderate and severe disabilities using a prompt hierarchy in the context of environmental arrangements. A multiple probe across participants design was used to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing a prompt hierarchy with an environmental arrangement. The results showed that when using a prompt hierarchy in the context of an environmental arrangement were effective in increasing initiations of communication for high school students with moderate and severe disabilities.

Peer-mediated interventions provide opportunities for students with disabilities to learn a variety of different skills and meet individualized goals. Peers can provide targeted social, behavioral, and academic supports to students with moderate and severe disabilities. One specific peer-mediated intervention is peer support arrangements. These interventions involve providing supports to students with disabilities in inclusive classrooms or other instructional contexts. These supports contain four key components: selection of students, training of peers, peer delivery of supports, and adult monitoring. When implemented with fidelity, peer support arrangements provide numerous benefits to both students with and without disabilities.

In this study, a multi-component, rapid coaching intervention that included providing rationales, modeling, coaching during brief practice sessions, and performance-based feedback to train parents of children with communication delays to use naturalistic strategies during play. In addition, this study modeled successful interdisciplinary collaboration. A multiple baseline design across behaviors was used to evaluate the intervention and subsequent changes in the parent’s behavior. Video modeling is a widely accepted and utilized intervention for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A multiple probe design across participants was utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of using video modeling to decrease transition duration within a preschool classroom. Participants were between the ages of 3-5 and students within an interdisciplinary public preschool classroom in a rural county. All sessions were conducted in the student’s classroom during their typical routine and the intervention was implemented by their classroom teacher. Preliminary results indicate that video modeling is an effective intervention for reducing the duration of transitioning.

In this study, a concurrent operant analysis (COA) was conducted for two elementary aged students in a public school to determine if the results yielded a possible reinforcer for work completion. A simultaneous treatments design was used during the COA to evaluate choice making behavior. The results of the COA indicated the student’s choice making behavior was maintained by access to tangibles, access to attention, or escape. The results were then used to create a token economy in which the student could earn their preferred reinforcer for work completion. Functional analysis (FA) is a tool practitioners can utilize to identify the function of challenging behavior. An interview informed contingency analysis (IISCA) is a variation of a FA. In an effort to improve patient care within a university-based clinic, a within-session analysis of the first test condition of an IISCA was conducted to determine if a shorter assessment yield results similar to the full IISCA. An alternating treatments design was used to evaluate differentiated rates of challenging behavior across conditions for eleven client cases at the university-based clinic.
