Professional Learning On The Neuroscience Of Challenging Behavior: Effects On Early Childhood Educators’ Beliefs And Practices, Angie Rosati, Jacqueline Lynch Jan 2022

Professional Learning On The Neuroscience Of Challenging Behavior: Effects On Early Childhood Educators’ Beliefs And Practices, Angie Rosati, Jacqueline Lynch

Publications and Scholarship

How early childhood educators understand and interpret the challenging behavior of children will affect how they respond and influence student-teacher relationships. While recent neuroscience explains how challenging behavior can be understood as an automatic response to neurophysiological stress, this research is seldom shared with early childhood educators who generally report lacking tools to manage child behavior and may interpret all challenging behavior as a willful act. This mixed method study examined the effects of a 2-day professional learning (PL) program regarding the neuroscience of child behavior on early educator beliefs and practices in regard to challenging behavior. Pre-post analysis of …

Facilitators And Barriers To Mentoring Newcomers To Canada, Ferzana Chaze, Leigh Hayden, Deepikaa Gupta, Elaine Kwee, Dorothy Rodrigues, Arlene Samuel

Research Report

Employment mentoring has been found to have many benefits to newcomer mentees. TRIEC Mentoring Partnership (TMP) is an occupation-specific mentoring program for skilled newcomers that has successfully helped thousands of newcomers build their professional networks and learn more about the Canadian workplace and the labour market. The demand for TMP programs currently far outweighs the supply. While TMP has had great success in recruiting mentors in some professions, it has had limited success in recruiting mentors from other professions. This research, supported by funding by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s (SSHRC) Partnership Engage Grant sought to understand:

• What …

Research Survey Questionnaire And Results, Iryna Molodecky

Prior to the development of the Visual Toolkit, a questionnaire was sent to all full and part-time faculty in the Pilon School of Business to gather information about the current use of visual tools among the faculty. Among the 10 questions asked were inquiries into faculty and student level of comfort with visuals, whether faculty was aware of the use of visual tools in business today and whether they believe teaching visual thinking (learning and processing with visuals) will better prepare students for the current business environment. The full questionnaire and survey results are included here

An important element of the Visual Toolkit is the visual template. Templates are one of the key visual strategies used in business meetings and offer structure, framework and support in leading people through a process. Templates can be customized to support the thinking at various stages of a project and are particularly suitable for systems process work where teams need to collaborate and brainstorm solutions to complex business problems.

Sheridan College students from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year of the Child and Youth Care (CYC) program participated in an innovative project to co-create a rubric for self-reflection assignments which is a significant skill in both academic and professional practice. Students co-designed this self-reflection rubric for use throughout the program for assessment in all self-reflection assignments rather than having a different rubric for every assignment. The students went through many steps to ensure the rubric had intra-rater and inter-rater reliability. We followed rubric best practices for criteria, levels, and descriptors. The extensive design thinking process of discussion and consultation resulted …

Objective Method For Diagnosis Of Chronic Pain (Presentation), Rachel Jiang Mar 2021

Objective Method For Diagnosis Of Chronic Pain (Presentation), Rachel Jiang

Generator at Sheridan

Pain assessment is essential to providing proper patient care and assessing its efficacy under clinical settings. To assess pain, physicians typically rely on patients' statements, which are subjective, or imaging technologies, which are unreliable as detected abnormalities do not always indicate pain and are not always present in cases of chronic pain. This research project aims at creating an automated chronic pain diagnostic system that will output a computer diagnosed pain score with the ability to accurately distinguish real from fake pain. The proposed system will enhance patient care and improve clinical practice efficiencies by applying the advanced 3D technologies …

The session will describe our efforts during Fall 2020 to keep our ESL Club social activities relevant for our changing student demographic (fewer international students, more domestic students with work and family responsibilities) and attract more students to attend virtual social events during a challenging time with so much fluctuation. The result was the creation of social activities that combined socialization with the means of enhancing learners’ metacognition, emotional regulation, resilience and motivation. Two of these events were a Newcomer Success Stories coffee chat and a forum presented by EAP students capturing their journey through the ESL Program. These events …
