Artificial Intelligence: Integration In Higher-Level Accounting Teaching And Learning Practices, Sarah Rahim

Honours Bachelor of Business Administration

This literature review examines the issues related to the integration of artificial intelligence in accounting education within the Ontario college context. A review of current scholarly literature reveals important benefits including improved teaching and learning practices. However, the research also cautions about some of the disadvantages including bias and academic integrity breaches. Stakeholder perceptions to artificial intelligence are also explored, including those of educators, students, employers, governments, advocacy groups, and developers. The literature revealed that artificial intelligence can be effectively integrated into classrooms and teaching/learning practices via course design, grading, intelligent tutoring, and planning. However, it also cautioned about the …

International Students And Housing, Deborah Bright Apr 2024

International Students And Housing, Deborah Bright

Capstone Research Posters

Housing is a primary concern for international students. This is especially true for students whose post-secondary institution has no or very explicitly limited designed residences and must rely on private market housing. The research seeks to answer the following two questions: What are the challenges experienced by international students in securing suitable housing, and how do housing-related challenges impact international students’ educational experiences? Thirty-three participants engaged in an anonymous survey using Microsoft Forms. Evidence was collected about international student’s experiences, including housing challenges and successes. One of the critical findings revealed during students’ search for housing was that it caused …

Education And Community: Education Helping Immigrants Find Community And Belonging., Belle Lemieux Chan, Josephine Smith, Lauren Gracey

Egypt Migrations Partnership and Comparative Immigrant Experiences

Education serves as a structured pathway for immigrants to establish a sense of community and belonging in their new country. Through the consistency and frequency of interactions within educational environments, immigrants have the opportunity to form meaningful friendships with peers from diverse backgrounds. These connections not only enhance their quality of life but also facilitate a smoother transition into their adopted homeland. By engaging in academic pursuits alongside fellow students, immigrants find camaraderie and support, fostering a sense of belonging that transcends cultural barriers. In essence, the educational community becomes a sanctuary where immigrants can thrive socially and academically, forging …

Inclusive Community Building At Sheridan: A Wayfinding Journey (Report), Lia Tsotsos, Kathryn Warren-Norton, Patricia Marshall, Angela Iarocci

Publications and Scholarship

In early 2023 a Sheridan College Generator Growth Grant was awarded for a project titled, “Inclusive Community Building at Sheridan: A built environment review of the Trafalgar Campus for an aging population”. The goal of this project was to better understand how individuals aged 55+ of all abilities interact, access and navigate post-secondary built environments, aiming to identify what is, and what is not, working. This contributes to Sheridan College’s campus planning processes and the improvement and expansion of existing wayfinding systems at Sheridan’s Trafalgar Campus.

Leveraging Oer And Open Pedagogy To Promote Edi In The Classroom, Sam Cheng May 2023

Leveraging Oer And Open Pedagogy To Promote Edi In The Classroom, Sam Cheng

Publications and Scholarship

In the context of promoting equity for students, the open educational resources (OER) movement has shifted from just cost savings to addressing the larger issue of decolonizing education and promoting social justice for marginalized students. Studies suggest a lack of inclusiveness and diverse perspectives in educational materials despite the diverse demographic of students in post-secondary institutions. Open education advocates have argued that students need “windows and mirrors” to fully engage in their learning – course content they can relate to and content that offers different perspectives from their own.

This research paper is the author’s capstone project for the 2022-2023 …

The SDGs provide a universal and ambitious framework for addressing the world’s most urgent challenges. The SDGs aim to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for all global citizens by 2030 and they require significant traction in the next seven years to meet their targets. As institutions at the forefront of knowledge access, dissemination and mobilization, academic libraries are uniquely positioned to support and advance sustainable development through their collections, services, and programming, as well as through their operational practices at the heart of campus.

Contributing To A National Early Learning And Child Care System In Canada: An Environmental Scan Of Early Childhood Policy And Programs, Yalin Gorica, Yasaman Jalali-Kushki, Mei Wang, Jennifer Conforzi

Publications and Scholarship

As the federal government aims to establish a Canada-wide Early Learning and Child Care system with all provinces and territories, the significance of having a trained and qualified early childhood education (ECE) workforce is paramount to ensuring the provision of high-quality child care services to children. The shortage of qualified early learning and child care staff across the country calls for more research and program development to understand the complex issues of recruiting, supporting, and retaining qualified ECE professionals in the field. This environmental scan presents an opportunity for researchers to conduct a comprehensive review of current research trends and …

Professional Learning On The Neuroscience Of Challenging Behavior: Effects On Early Childhood Educators’ Beliefs And Practices, Angie Rosati, Jacqueline Lynch Jan 2022

Professional Learning On The Neuroscience Of Challenging Behavior: Effects On Early Childhood Educators’ Beliefs And Practices, Angie Rosati, Jacqueline Lynch

Publications and Scholarship

How early childhood educators understand and interpret the challenging behavior of children will affect how they respond and influence student-teacher relationships. While recent neuroscience explains how challenging behavior can be understood as an automatic response to neurophysiological stress, this research is seldom shared with early childhood educators who generally report lacking tools to manage child behavior and may interpret all challenging behavior as a willful act. This mixed method study examined the effects of a 2-day professional learning (PL) program regarding the neuroscience of child behavior on early educator beliefs and practices in regard to challenging behavior. Pre-post analysis of …

Best Practices For Conducting Virtual Focus Groups, Rosanne Brown Jan 2022

Best Practices For Conducting Virtual Focus Groups, Rosanne Brown

Publications and Scholarship

This paper briefly traces focus groups from its origins, through its development from in-person to virtual platforms, which are more commonplace today. The terms online and virtual are used interchangeably in the research literature. In this paper, the term virtual is used to describe focus groups that are face-to-face using technology that incorporate audiovisual features. This paper begins with a description of the origins and purpose of focus groups, the purpose, and how they have evolved to include synchronous, and asynchronous online text-based, and virtual face-to-face focus groups. Next, the paper outlines the role of the facilitator. Comparisons of best …

Facilitators And Barriers To Mentoring Newcomers To Canada, Ferzana Chaze, Leigh Hayden, Deepikaa Gupta, Elaine Kwee, Dorothy Rodrigues, Arlene Samuel

Research Report

Employment mentoring has been found to have many benefits to newcomer mentees. TRIEC Mentoring Partnership (TMP) is an occupation-specific mentoring program for skilled newcomers that has successfully helped thousands of newcomers build their professional networks and learn more about the Canadian workplace and the labour market. The demand for TMP programs currently far outweighs the supply. While TMP has had great success in recruiting mentors in some professions, it has had limited success in recruiting mentors from other professions. This research, supported by funding by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council’s (SSHRC) Partnership Engage Grant sought to understand:

• What …
