How can we reach “new” levels of knowledge if “new” means that there is something “evolved” that cannot be generated simply by deduction or by induction from what has been given before. The paper’s first goal is to show that two paradigmatic attempts at solving this so-called “learning paradox,” Plato’s apriorism and Aristotle’s inductivism, form two horns of a dilemma: While the inductivist cannot justify any representation of data without assuming a priori given hypotheses, the apriorist cannot justify why a certain application of given ideas is correct without being caught in an infinite regress. Mesocentrism And Students Of Mexican Background: A Community Intervention For Culturally Relevant Instruction, Heriberto Godina Phd

How does the integration of information about a student's ancestral culture elicit a more positive motivation for their learning in school? Chicano activists in the Southwest exposed middle school students to a program of instruction based on Mesoamerican ancestry. The program's effectiveness is analyzed through a quasi-experiment. A pre- and post-survey measured cultural awareness, desire, effect, reading preference, self-esteem, and self-concept. Informal student narratives were used to interpret treatment effects. Results indicated that the intervention enhanced students' sense of cultural awareness and voluntary reading preferences. Implication for the study include how culturally relevant instruction can be a valuable stepping stone …

Abductive reasoning takes place in forming "hypotheses" in order to explain "facts." Thus, the concept of abduction promises an understanding of creativity in science and learning. It raises, however, also a lot of problems. Some of them will be discussed in this paper: After analyzing the difference between induction and abduction (1), I shall discuss Peirce's claim that there is a "logic" of abduction (2). The thesis is that this claim can be understood, if we make a clear distinction between inferential elements and perceptive elements of abductive reasoning. Despite the popularity of promotionally-oriented Web sites within journalism/ mass communication programs in higher education, there has been little examination of sites and their contents. Almost no research has focused on visual, informational, and operational enhancements, or how Web sites of different higher education programs in the discipline differ from each other. This research addresses some of the unanswered questions about how journalism/ mass communication Web sites use enhancements to communicate with online users.

O livro é uma coletânea de dezoito documentos que delineiam os conteúdos programáticos ensinados na escola secundaria brasileira de 1850 a 1951. Os documentos correspondem a reformas educacionais efetuadas neste período. Dentre os programas da coletânea, quinze foram elaborados especificamente para o Colégio Pedro II, o no Rio de Janeiro. Os outros três foram expedidos pelo Ministério da Educação para serem implementados em nível nacional. Os programas de estudo contem informações sobre os itens de conteúdos das matérias e sua organização nas series, o numero de lições atribuídas a cada tópico, e referencias a autores e livros textos utilizados. Ziel dieses Beitrages ist es, ein Projekt der am Institut für Didaktik der Mathematik (IDM) in Bielefeld beheimateten Arbeitsgruppe Erkenntnistheoretische und semiotische Grundlagen des Mathematik-Lernens vorzustellen und in eine bestimmte Richtung mathematikdidaktischer Forschung einzuordnen, wie sie von Michael Otte vertreten wird, dem Leiter der genannten Arbeitsgruppe. A reforma educacional brasileira de 1870 do ministro Paulino de Souza procurou dar uma nova orientação aos estudos do Colégio Pedro II por enriquecer o “espirito” e desenvolver o intelecto do aluno através do ensino das Humanidades. Este trabalho relata a historia e analisa os conteúdos do programa de estudos do Colégio Pedro II, discutindo o numero e tipos de disciplinas no programa, seu sequenciamento nas series, e as cargas horarias atribuídas à elas. Em particular, examina a organização das disciplinas em “blocos de series”, seguidos por exames finais.

O trabalho relata historia e analisa os conteudos de estudos do programa do Gymnasio Nacional (antigo Colegio Pedro II), proposta na reforma educacioal de 1899 de Epitácio Pessoa. A reforma retomou a idéia de um curso único para o Colégio, abolindo, assim, os cursos Clássico e Realista do plano anterior. Reduziu de sete para seis anos o curso secundário, seguindo a orientação do Curso Clássico de curriculo de 1898, ao mesmo tempo defendendo estudos de caráter pratico e utlitario, e nao so propadeutico. This review of research examines improving educational curriculum through reflective practice influenced by minority culture. Examples of Chicano and indigenous culture are cited. The implications of a poorly educated and growing minority group population indicate the need for reflective awareness in curriculum and challenges the established policies imposed by the majority culture. Reflective qualitative research, and holistic education is perceived to be a viable solution to the inadequate curriculum imposed upon minority culture.

Engaging The Spectrum: Civic Virtue And The Protection Of Student Voice In School-Sponsored Forums, Robert R.M. Verchick

This article suggests a new justification for protecting student speech that specifically addresses the need for free expression and inquiry in school- sponsored forums. Starting with the proposition that student speech prepares one for self-government, I suggest we re-define the kind of self-government to which we ask students to aspire. By recasting our conception of democracy in a way that highlights universal participation and group transformation, we will find a theory of government much closer to the values of group discovery and social reform.
