The research question addressed in this capstone was, How does the development of early literacy skills and the partnership between a child’s home and school promote literacy success? This capstone describes the foundational early literacy skills necessary for literacy success for students, and discusses ways that school and home can collaborate towards ensuring that students are effectively prepared for literacy learning as they begin their formal schooling. The goal of the capstone project was to provide families with tools and resources that can be used to help them develop more effective literacy learning for their children.

Vocabulary word selection and instruction is hard for educators to grasp, with so many methods to choose from. Focusing on the question of How does the selection of vocabulary words, instruction, and assessment affect the retention of newly learned vocabulary? leads us to our answer. The capstone study focusing around this question made it evident that educators need to select words from text, differ instruction throughout a two-week time frame, and assess on between eight and twelve words for every two-week period. Students need to be given time to connect and work with the words that are new to them. …

The purpose of this research study was to answer the research question: How does integrating STEMthemed environmental investigations in the middle school classroom impact environmental literacy? In order to understand the various aspects of this research question, a literature review was conducted for the topics of middle school learners, STEM learning and environmental literacy. The study utilized a mixed methods approach and 131, 7th grade students participated in the study; students took the Middle School Environmental Literacy Survey (MSELS) as a pretest and posttest. This study looked at how English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ motives and identities changed throughout their careers. It looked at teachers’ initial motivations for entering the field, and how these motivations changed with regards to their ever-evolving teacher identity. It also looked at some of the roles and challenges EFL teachers encounter while working in foreign countries and how this contributes to their job satisfaction and desire to continue teaching. Kindergarten has undergone continuous change since its inception in 1837. Minnesota’s kindergarten program experienced a substantial transformation during the 2014-2015 academic year by offering full-day kindergarten at no cost. Students attending full-day kindergarten will receive twice the amount of instruction as years past, prompting a study on what effect this may have on student achievement. The guiding questions in this research project are Does explicitly teaching aspect to advanced-level adult learners of English lead to greater understanding of causal inferences in narrative context? Does a delayed post-test show that teaching contributes to integration into learners’ knowledge base for later acquisition and not just lead to intake? A Correlation Between English Oral Language Proficiency And The Success Of The Reading Recovery Program For Karen Students, Heidi Wheelock

This case study explores how the success of Karen Reading Recovery students correlates to their English oral language proficiency. Three first-grade Karen students in the second round of Reading Recovery were assessed to find their English oral language proficiency. Their pretest and posttest scores from the program were analyzed as well as observation data about their success in the use of semantic and syntactic prompts. Interview data from the Reading Recovery teachers about the exit status of the students was analyzed for recurring themes. The research question addressed in this project was, how does having regularly scheduled one on one meetings between an academically struggling student and one of their teachers effect their success in school? It used a mixed-methods approach to gather data that included interviews, surveys, and academic data collected from students, their teachers, and their parents. The action research that was conducted involved two book clubs that were each made up of four second grade students. One of the groups used talk prompts to enhance the accountable talk in book clubs and the other group had a book club discussion without the use of talk prompts. The purpose was to determine possible reasons why the employment gap for students with intellectual disabilities remains high following graduation from secondary programs. It describes how the author used a unit planning framework designed for dual immersion to adapt lessons from the environmental education curriculum Project WILD for her first grade Spanish immersion class. Both curriculum design and action research were incorporated into the project. In this study, the author examines educators’ beliefs about two existing racial trends in special education. The first is the over-identification of African American students as candidates in need of special education. The Karen people are one of the newest refugee populations to immigrate to the United States, but very little is known about them. The Karen have endured a civil war in Burma that has caused family separation, loss of loved ones, interrupted education and suffering from human rights violations. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the types and critical thinking skills used by adult ESL students as they learned technology skills through an inquiry approach. The results are based on the types of critical thinking skills that were utilized by adult students working collaboratively on an Excel computer project. Critical thinking was measured by coding audio recordings using the Transitions Integration Framework’s critical thinking skills category. Data were quantified by frequency of occurrence for each sub skill of critical thinking. Results show the most prominent critical thinking skills used by students in this study are problem-solving …

The research question addressed is, do sociolinguistic variables influence the use of rendaku among native speakers of Japanese? The motivating factor for this capstone was that rendaku use seems to be inconsistent. This capstone records the rendaku use of twelve native Japanese speakers in semistructured interviews to examine if aspects of their sociolinguistic backgrounds correlate with rendaku use. Key influences for this capstone were the writer’s own experience with rendaku as a Japanese learner in Japan and his professor who recognized the potential for rendaku to be studied through the prism of sociolinguistics. Tales For A Teacher’S Toolbox: Stories Of Emergent Bilinguals And Their Funds Of Knowledge, Erika Rae Bakkum

Through a systematic review of ethnographic studies, this qualitative study collected stories that demonstrate the cultural wealth of emergent bilingual students. The stories collected demonstrate the aspirational, navigational, social, linguistic, familial, and resistant capitals (Yosso, 2005) as well as the experiential and social and emotional assets (WIDA, 2014) of emergent bilingual students. The narratives documented in this study can be retold as counter narratives that contradict commonly held deficit beliefs regarding emergent bilingual students, their families, and their communities.

The research questions addressed in this project were: How do primary classroom teachers interpret the roles of families in engagement in education? How do the families of primary-aged Chinese children interpret their own roles in engagement in education? How are these interpretations similar and different? In this project, the researcher discovered answers to these questions by administering a questionnaire to families of primary-age Chinese students and those students’ teachers. The aim of this qualitative research was to explore how students presented reasoned arguments supported by evidence and reasoning after receiving constructivist-based instruction. The author documents the details of the results and uses related research literature to construct meaning and validate constructivist pedagogy and the evidencebased writing instruction. The progress of twenty students’ ability to write a claim, give specific evidence and reasoning was followed throughout the investigation. This action research study was conducted in a ninth grade civics classroom over the course of three weeks and in three separate class periods. There were 85 students included in the research. Through the examination of existing research concerning the use of and attitudes toward students’ first language (L1) in ESL teaching environments, this project sought to answer the questions: how are students’ L1s used in the ESL classroom and what benefits are associated with their use?
