The research question explored in this capstone was, how might I aid schools and districts in implementing district-wide systematic phonics intervention, both instructionally and organizationally? It documents Denver Public Schools (DPS) efforts to implement the READ act, a comprehensive law in which all students are evaluated in reading and assigned intervention if needed. The capstone explores how DPS can implement tiered systematic phonics intervention as part of the READ act. The paper reviews the most current peer reviewed research regarding the efficacy of phonics intervention. The research question addressed in this capstone was, How does the development of early literacy skills and the partnership between a child’s home and school promote literacy success? This capstone describes the foundational early literacy skills necessary for literacy success for students, and discusses ways that school and home can collaborate towards ensuring that students are effectively prepared for literacy learning as they begin their formal schooling. The goal of the capstone project was to provide families with tools and resources that can be used to help them develop more effective literacy learning for their children.

The Karen people are one of the newest refugee populations to immigrate to the United States, but very little is known about them. The Karen have endured a civil war in Burma that has caused family separation, loss of loved ones, interrupted education and suffering from human rights violations. The research question addressed in this study was, what is the effect of retention on English language learners (ELL)? The ELL student population has increased in United States schools and in this dynamic and heterogeneous group includes students that perform lower than grade level. This capstone provides research and teacher interviews regarding the efficacy of holding back struggling English learners. Following discussion of current research and teacher opinions, the author examines the results to form implications for educators considering using grade retention with English language learners.

There is a large amount of research available about how childhood trauma may affect the brain and education. However, there are few practical resources that teachers can take back to their classrooms. This capstone is the preliminary step in creating a toolkit for teachers to help them better serve traumatized students. A survey was administered to teachers of a variety of disciplines at the high school level. Responses indicated that teachers had a good deal of knowledge about how trauma might affect their students. The research question addressed in this project was, what impact does movement have on student learning and engagement? It focused on the teaching strategies used by one teacher in a low income school setting. Students were enrolled in a court ordered treatment program with minimal opportunities for movement throughout the day. Primary and secondary analyses of various mediums including surveys, formative assessments, warm¬up questions, as well as behavior logs were collected and analyzed. The purpose of this study was to determine if Text Talk is a viable vocabulary-teaching tool for English Learners. The students of the study were provided additional support in vocabulary and reading skills based on formal and informal grade level assessments. The children received supplemental instruction within the RtI framework. The research approach was an action research project that took place during an extended reading period. The research question addressed in this project was, how can implementing oral language strategies support first grade struggling readers? In this project, action research was conducted in an urban first grade classroom with nine student participants. All of the student participants were categorized as first grade struggling readers and came from many different diverse backgrounds. During the research two oral language strategies were implemented during a four-week period with two reading groups. This research explores the results of integrating cell/smartphones in a field-based curriculum in a alternative high school science class. The author uses her personal teaching experiences to develop social and emotional learning (SEL) standards for public high schools in Minnesota. The research question addressed in this capstone was, how can kindergarten teachers support the Response to Intervention (RTI) process? It explores the RTI model, procedures for student identification, developmental appropriateness, and ways to collect and use data to support student growth. The action research study documents the results of interventions performed with five students in a kindergarten classroom. The findings demonstrate that early student identification and structured intervention within the classroom can have positive effects on student growth and success.
