Supporting Admitted Students, Preventing Academic Jeopardy, Bridget M. Baehl Apr 2024

Supporting Admitted Students, Preventing Academic Jeopardy, Bridget M. Baehl

Culminating Experience Projects

The academic success of incoming students has been a growing concern for colleges and universities. The number of students ending up in academic jeopardy has been skyrocketing. While universities have support for academic success, the resources must be more utilized. These supports also tend to work in silos instead of functioning as a community support. This project explains the demographics of college students and the types of support that these students would best benefit from. To adequately support students who the universities are at the most significant risk of failing, colleges need to expand their support services. In response to …

Graduate students face a multitude of stressors that can negatively impact their mental health and wellbeing, including academic pressures, work-life balance issues, and financial strains. However, minimal attention has been focused the needs of graduate student population, and existing support are limited. More so, student affairs professionals and practitioners (SAPPs) often engage and interact with graduate student. Yet, many SAPPs who are interested in helping address graduate students’ mental health needs lack sufficient training to effectively support graduate students experiencing mental health challenges. The purpose of this project is to develop and implement a comprehensive training program to equip SAPPs …

Predominantly White Teacher Education Programs Are Stifling Black Preservice Students’ Teaching Experience: Now What?, Jasmine N. Wilson Apr 2024

Predominantly White Teacher Education Programs Are Stifling Black Preservice Students’ Teaching Experience: Now What?, Jasmine N. Wilson

Culminating Experience Projects

scholarship theorizes and discusses Black preservice teachers’ experiences in predominantly White teacher education programs as stifling. While many studies have explored ways to improve Black students' experiences in teacher education, few studies have sought to adapt Historically Black Colleges and Universities’ (HBCU) successful strategies to produce and retain Black teachers. In this project I have two goals. My first goal is to highlight the neglect and inequity that Black preservice teachers face in predominantly White teacher education programs. My second goal is to ensure that faculty members in teacher education programs effectively support and prepare Black preservice teachers for long …

A Workship Cirriculum For Student Loan Debt, Cion Swoope Apr 2024

A Workship Cirriculum For Student Loan Debt, Cion Swoope

Culminating Experience Projects

For many college students, taking out student loans is a necessary step towards higher education, yet it often leads to accumulated debt that can seem insurmountable. This project intends to investigate the implications of student loan debt, such as homeownership, household debt, and other life goals, and educate borrowers on the potential repercussions. Using Becker's (1993) Human Capital theory, I will examine the investment logic behind student loan borrowing, framing debt as a calculated risk for future gain. This project also uses Crenshaw's (1989) Intersectionality theory to extend beyond the scope of the average borrower and highlight the demographic groups …

Rural students face unique challenges in navigating opportunities to find community and access support in higher education, despite these opportunities being critical to success. Factors such as geographic isolation, limited resources, and unfamiliarity with campus environments can exacerbate these challenges, highlighting the need for tailored interventions to enhance rural student outcomes in higher education. Getting involved on campus and having a sense of belonging has long been cited as important facets to promoting student success. This project seeks to develop a targeted orientation program with informative presentations, inclusive social events, and hands-on opportunities to experience a variety of clubs and …

Faculty And Student Perception Of Open Educational Resources In Higher Education, Bethany J. Welling Aug 2023

Faculty And Student Perception Of Open Educational Resources In Higher Education, Bethany J. Welling

Culminating Experience Projects

There is an ever-increasing rise in higher education, including the price of textbooks. Students are choosing to not purchase textbooks to save money. An alternative to this problem needs to occur. One solution is the use of Open Educational Resources (OER). OER improves the cost and quality of course materials for students and makes the materials accessible, thus promoting equity among all students. When all students have access to the materials on the first day, they become more engaged with the course. This paper describes the benefits of OER in higher education and the student and faculty perceptions. To make …

An Examination Of The First-Year Experience Of Conditionally Admitted Students, Alexis Gunn Aug 2023

An Examination Of The First-Year Experience Of Conditionally Admitted Students, Alexis Gunn

Culminating Experience Projects

This project investigates the first-year experience of conditionally admitted students in higher education institutions. The findings within the literature highlight the needs that conditionally admitted students require, which include but are not limited to: the need for greater academic support, mental health support, and understanding of the school-life balance. By understanding the first-year experiences of conditionally admitted students, the project was able to implement strategies to ensure a smoother transition. To do this, a design for first-year workshops designed specifically for conditionally admitted students was developed that addressed resources and support, emotional intelligence and self-care, and time management and organization.

Summer Bridge Programs And The Impact On African American Students, Astin Martin

Culminating Experience Projects

Summer bridge programs have been an effective strategy for increasing African American students' success in higher education according to Detgen, Fernandez, McMahon, Johnson, and Dailey study (2021). This project explores summer bridge programs and highlights how these programs provide academic, social, and cultural support to help students overcome the challenges they may face during their transition to college (Ghazzawi, Pattison, Horn, Hardy & Brown, 2021). The success of summer bridge programs can be attributed to their ability to provide early academic preparation, build a sense of community, and increase the confidence and self-efficacy of disadvantaged students in Science, Technology, Engineering, …

The Social-Psychological Development Of Dual-Enrollment Students, Paulie Robinson-Stevens Aug 2023

The Social-Psychological Development Of Dual-Enrollment Students, Paulie Robinson-Stevens

Culminating Experience Projects

Dual enrollment is a college acceleration program that allows high school students to take college classes while still in high school. This program as it exists today prepares students for the academic rigors of college, but it does not adequately develop the social or psychological skills they need to succeed in a college environment. Dual enrollment programs also do not include information about transfer credits, financial aid, or support services, all of which are necessary for students to transition from high school to a higher education institution. This project proposes a nine-week seminar to complement the academic preparation dual enrollment …

Ways To Increase Retention Rates Among American Indian/Alaskan Native Students At Community Colleges, Sarah R. Wheeler

Culminating Experience Projects

American Indians/Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) pursue higher education disproportionately compared to other populations. Literature indicates that a sense of belonging significantly impacts AI/AN students' persistence rates at community colleges. Sense of belonging and support from community colleges and families directly influence student success in higher education. AI/AN students are grounded in their community and have desires to build their cultural capital. Obtaining a degree will strengthen their community and, ultimately, their nation. It is essential for AI/AN students and parents to feel equipped with resources and ways community colleges support marginalized students. Creating a student and parent orientation, access to a …

Corpus Expositum: Fat Studies As Critical Education Material For Student Affairs Professionals, Jenna J. Weatherwax Apr 2023

Corpus Expositum: Fat Studies As Critical Education Material For Student Affairs Professionals, Jenna J. Weatherwax

Culminating Experience Projects

As Fat Studies is an emerging field within higher education student affairs, research shows that the academic, social, and personal development of students who face fatphobia or discrimination is stunted (Brown, 2016; McHugh and Kasardo, 2012; Ramseyer Winter, 2017; Ropers-Huilman et al., 2016; Stevens, 2018; Wann, 2009). But, as colleges have historically and continuously ignored or erased the presence of fat students on their campuses, fat students are often left without support during their college experiences (Wann, 2009). Several factors impact fat college students and this project explores these factors, including the gendered aspect to fatphobia, the medicalization of fatness …

This project examines the existing professional development available to graduate teaching assistants, their self-reported needs, and provides a pedagogical development planning tool for graduate teaching assistants. The Pedagogical Development Plan for Graduate Teaching Assistants incorporates suggestions from reviewed literature, as well as andragogy theory (Knowles, 1980) and self-efficacy theory (Bandura, 1982). The framework consists of a self-guided planning document tool and catalog of pedagogical development opportunities available to graduate …

Enhancing Institutional Support Through A First Year Transfer Experience Program, Jade E. Bowman Apr 2023

Enhancing Institutional Support Through A First Year Transfer Experience Program, Jade E. Bowman

Culminating Experience Projects

There is a great deal of literature revolving around the transfer student population. Many researchers argue that transfer students do not receive adequate attention and support within their first academic semester, considerably when transferring from a two-year to a four-year institution. In order to improve retention rates and overall persistence, postsecondary institutions need to prioritize transfer student initiatives for proper academic and social integration. This project aims to identify key components that impact the transfer process, while recognizing successful, adaptable interventions that can support the unique needs of the transfer student population. The design and implementation of a First Year …

Queer And Trans* Students’ Experience With Gender-Inclusive Housing At Four-Year Public Institutions, Chad D. Novak Apr 2023

Queer And Trans* Students’ Experience With Gender-Inclusive Housing At Four-Year Public Institutions, Chad D. Novak

Culminating Experience Projects

Queer and trans* students can face many struggles within higher education, including individual and institutional discriminatory practices. Higher education’s housing and residence life can perpetuate a heteronormative environment through gender-segregated residence halls. Research indicates gender-inclusive housing can provide gender-appropriate accommodation for queer and trans* students. However, colleges and universities do not center the voices and experiences of queer and trans* students in creating and assessing gender-inclusive housing, creating additional logistical obstacles to accessing and retaining in housing and residence life. This project aims to mitigate logistical obstacles and struggles faced by queer and trans* students by creating a living-learning community …

Social & Personal Identity Empowerment Workshop: Increasing Sense Of Belonging For Gender And Sexually Diverse Students, Olivia N. Witsaman

Culminating Experience Projects

Current research has identified that gender and sexually diverse college students experience decreased sense of belonging and increased mental health conditions in the higher education landscape and beyond. Research acknowledges cisheteronormativity, the overarching oppressive, social structure as the catalyst for this pervasive problem. This project explores how higher education institutions, including Grand Valley State University, can address LGBTQIA2S+ mental health needs by improving campus climate through campus-wide education acknowledging the multitude of identities that exist. Through developing identity-centered programming, outreach, and resources, gender and sexually diverse students can experience enhanced sense of belonging. An effective social identity empowerment program must …

Building Student-Athlete Resilience On And Off The Field, Hannah Beatus Apr 2023

Building Student-Athlete Resilience On And Off The Field, Hannah Beatus

Culminating Experience Projects

Literature continues to demonstrate that student-athletes have a difficult time understanding how the skills they acquire as a student-athlete are transferrable to a non-sport environment. Student-athletes are exposed to messages about resilience early on in their athletic careers yet lack the understanding of how these skills are applicable to life outside of athletics. This project examines the aforementioned problem through an ecological systems theory lens. A workshop series designed to bring together student-athletes and coaches addresses this knowledge gap. It is hoped that by bringing together student-athletes and coaches that the development of resilience can be understood through a more …

Exploring The Lived Experience Of International Students Of Color At Predominately White Institutions., Soheli Farzana Jony

Culminating Experience Projects

International students are essential to US higher education, bringing cultural, global, and economic growth to US institutions each year. Despite previous research explaining this population's adjustment barriers due to cultural and linguistic differences, this project paper investigated the lived experience of international students of color (ISC) in relation to racism, microaggression, sexism, classism, and linguicism that they experience in U.S. higher education. Thus, to fully understand the lived experience of international students of color in predominantly white institutions, four major tenets of critical race theory: racism is normal and not aberrational, white supremacy, counter storytelling, and intersectionality, were applied to …

The Efficacy Of Implementing Financial Literacy Curriculum For College Students, Nyia M. Slade Apr 2023

The Efficacy Of Implementing Financial Literacy Curriculum For College Students, Nyia M. Slade

Culminating Experience Projects

As college students continue to rely on student loans, it is concerning that only a few interventions are in place to promote financial literacy. The federally required Loan Entrance Counseling and Loan Exit Counseling are ineffective, leaving students at a disadvantage. This project addresses this issue by examining the significance and effectiveness of financial literacy programs at postsecondary institutions. A more comprehensive approach is necessary by implementing a financial education course that covers loan processes, financial literacy, and overall financial wellness.

Food For Thought: A Food Initiative For Selective Institutions, Johanna Hossink Apr 2023

Food For Thought: A Food Initiative For Selective Institutions, Johanna Hossink

Culminating Experience Projects

Food insecurity is a problem facing many college students across the United States. While many colleges and universities have begun to address food insecurity on their campuses by providing resources such as food pantries and meal swipe programs, selective institutions have largely been left out of the conversation. Food insecurity in college creates a plethora of barriers that often prevent students from experiencing college in the same capacity as their food secure counterparts. Unfortunately, low-income students facing food insecurity at selective institutions must face the additional barrier of a culture of wealth that often renders their food insecurity invisible while …

Higher Education Professionals Are Not Prepared To Support Students' Growth And Exploration Of Religion And Worldviews, Matthew Gibson

Culminating Experience Projects

Religion and worldview development is often ignored within higher education. Whether inside of the classroom or in initiatives towards diversity, equity, and inclusion, religions and worldviews are kept out. This project looks at why this is the case and uses the Interfaith Triangle as a theoretical framework to provide a possible solution to this problem. This project was completed in three chapters. The first provides an introduction into why religion and worldview identity development are left out of higher education and how this project will address the issue. The second is a literature review that uses the Interfaith Triangle to …

The Best Way To Learn A Pedagogy Is Practice: A Project-Based Learning Journey, Kelly C. Margot, Katherine Worden Mar 2023

The Best Way To Learn A Pedagogy Is Practice: A Project-Based Learning Journey, Kelly C. Margot, Katherine Worden

Michigan Reading Journal

Project based learning (PBL) is an instructional practice that gives students an opportunity to learn while focused on sustained inquiry. The teacher becomes a facilitator of learning by guiding students through an inquiry-process that includes authentic learning leading to a student-created product that will be shown to an authentic audience. Preservice teachers often lack exposure to this type of inquiry-based learning from their own school experiences and may be intimidated by this type of pedagogy. This manuscript tells the story of one English preservice teacher’s experience learning to be more comfortable with PBL and the role teacher education played by …
