Under God? : A Study Of Freedom Of Religion, The Founding Fathers, The Supreme Court, And The Schools, Alice Sofis Evangelides Apr 1967

Under God? : A Study Of Freedom Of Religion, The Founding Fathers, The Supreme Court, And The Schools, Alice Sofis Evangelides

Master's Theses

The first part of my study concerns the meaning of "religious freedom" as revealed through the fundamental laws of the Constitutional period. In the course of my research, I have compiled and noted every mention of religion in the State Constitutions and Bills of Rights drafted between 1776 and 1791. I have read the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation and the Northwest Ordinance; the Debates in the Constitutional Convention, the State Ratifying Conventions, and the First Congress, and extracted every significant mention of religion. I have not looked behind the words to the actual prac tice, but rather to …

A Course Of Study For The Lds Indian Seminary Program Of Northern America For Junior High School Students, Eldred Bruce Preece

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of writing this teacher's manual was to provide a course of study for the junior high school Indian Seminary students living mainly in Northern climes of North America. In more recent years, a greater emphasis by the Church has been placed on preaching the Gospel to Northern Indian tribes, as evidenced by the organization of the Northern Indian Mission in 1964. With the conversion of hundreds of Lamanites, came also the need to provide religious education and character development for the children of these new converts and for the children of older Church members. Many non-LDS students, with …

A Comprehensive Study To Determine The Teachers' Role In Politics, Hollie Wilford Crawford Jan 1960

A Comprehensive Study To Determine The Teachers' Role In Politics, Hollie Wilford Crawford

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

For many years a difference of opinion has existed regarding the role, if any, that a teacher should play in the political life of the community. There existed, and still exists, a great variance of opinion even on the part of teachers as to their political role. Some would have teachers set themselves completely apart from anything that even remotely resembles politics. Others would have teachers become deeply involved in the political life of the community. Heretofore no basis for participation in politics has been given other than personal opinion.

Should teachers participate in partisan politics? This single question states …

This study was developed because of the need of objective information bearing on the total problem or shifts in the elementary school. Each area of learning needs to be investigated to determine the merits, if any, as well as the shortcomings of partial-day or shift programs of instruction.

This study attempts to determine whether there is a difference between the reading achievement of second grade children non shifts" and those on regular-day …

A Study Of The Causes Of Racial Friction As Represented In The Detroit, Beaumont, And Harlem Outbreaks, Evelyn B. Knight Aug 1947

A Study Of The Causes Of Racial Friction As Represented In The Detroit, Beaumont, And Harlem Outbreaks, Evelyn B. Knight

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study has to do with the causes of racial friction as represented in the Detroit, Beaumont and Harlem outbreaks occurring in 1943. It will be pointed out that the incidental causes of such riots are symptoms leading to the exploratory job of finding the disease of "scapegoatism”. A survey of literature on the problem will bring about some understanding of the importance of racial prejudices and their relation to an international understanding. The opinions of experts in such fields as anthropology, economics, sociology, and psychology will be analyzed in an effort to determine how such friction may be eliminated …

Truancy : Its Sociological Implications, Helen Marie Hulcher Jul 1945

Truancy : Its Sociological Implications, Helen Marie Hulcher

Master's Theses

The term,"truancy", is interpreted in various ways. Julia Richman, District Superintendent of the Public Schools of New York in 1909, said, "The law in some states defines "truancy" as a failure to attend school, making no difference between the parents offense in keeping the child at home and the child's offense in remaining away from school without the parent's knowledge. It is this latter form which the school and the school alone must check." A. o. Neal, Superintendent of Schools, Franklin,Indiana, in the same year said, "Some Juvenile courts in Indiana have held that the truancy law means not only …

Federal Aid To Schools, Madge Arbogast Henderson Apr 1945

Federal Aid To Schools, Madge Arbogast Henderson

Master's Theses

It is my purpose in this thesis to present as far as possible an analysis of the social and economic bases of national interest in education. It would appear that a nation which is able to prepare for war so speedily, so effectively, apparently so efficiently as did this United States of America can "afford" to educate every citizen for democracy and the democratic way of life. The nation did not set up draft boards in each state independent of the National Government, but rather the National Government took and assumed the responsibility of setting up draft boards in each …

Secret Societies In The Secondary Schools Of The United States, Harold E. Chastain

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The problem of secret societies in secondary schools has long been a vexing question to educators in the field of secondary education. Because of this situation high schools have been torn apart, school principals and super- intendents have lost their positions, fraternity boys have been expelled from school, educators and parents have taken their differences to court, and the law-making bodies of nearly half the states in the union have taken it under consideration for legislation. A vast amount of periodical literature has been written on the subject of secret societies and not a few chapters in books dealing with …

A Study Of Child Nature: From The Kindergarten Standpoint, Elizabeth Harrison Jan 1925

A Study Of Child Nature: From The Kindergarten Standpoint, Elizabeth Harrison

Elizabeth Harrison’s Writings

Preface

These talks for mothers and teachers were given before my classes in Chicago and elsewhere. They are now published at the earnest request of the members of those classes, and are in nearly the same form as when given, which accounts for the number of anecdotes illustrating different points, as well as for the frequency of personal reminiscence. Fully aware of their many defects, but knowing well that "Charity covereth a multitude of sins," I give them with a loving heart to the mothers of America. I hop that the thought underlying them may be as helpful to others …
