Expectations of school administration changed dramatically over the course of the 20th century. Today, the roles and responsibilities of school administrators must be re-defined for success in the 21st century. The current research aimed at revealing the perception of school leadership by school administrators who were expected to cope with problems and enable students to succeed in the U.S. and Turkey. Comparative case study design was used to analyze and compare the U.S. and Turkey school administrators’ perceptions of school leadership through metaphors. This paper examines the origins, development, and effects of test based accountability between 1976 and 2009. Using evidence from North Carolina and other southern states to illuminate broader national developments, the paper focuses on three overlapping waves of test based accountability that began in southern states in the 1970s and spread throughout the United States in the decades that followed: 1) the minimum competency movement of the late 1970s and early 1980s, 2) the raising of high school graduation requirements and the implementation of more rigorous high school exit exams in the 1980s and 1990s, and 3) the adoption of …

This study examined military schools in the United States from events which resulted in the establishment of the United States Military Academy at West Point to 2011. From 1802 to 2011, 834 military schools have operated in the United States, privately and publicly funded, and including teaching components for elementary, secondary, and college levels. The importance of understanding this subject has grown as the number of military charter and public secondary schools has increased tenfold since 1999. Many colleges and universities have established student learning outcomes for diversity education as a part of their broad undergraduate education program. These education goals, developed for assessment purposes or other policies, reflect a range of possible diversity and multicultural learning purposes. The emphasis on some purposes, and the language used to articulate those purposes, potentially focuses or constrains practice. Using a policy discourse analysis methodology, I explore the articulated diversity education goals and the discourses and subject positions they advance. Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)
Feelings of frustration, loss, and exhaustion are common among healthcare workers. Students placed among new experiences and in a dependent learning role are not shielded from these emotions but often experience them differently from other members of the healthcare team. In addition to the systematic and individual support available through TJUH, for the past year and a half Jeff‐ CHAT (Compassion, Humanism, Altruism, Trust) has provided a forum for students to discuss and reflect on difficult emotions and situations.

Immediate use sterilization, also known as flash sterilization, is an expedited sterilization process used for surgical equipment needed in emergent clinical situations. Immediate use sterilization is a procedure used by Operating Room staff members to sterilize instrumentation on an as needed or just in time basis when instruments needed for a particular case are not immediately available or become contaminated in the course of the case. If instrumentation is not sterilized appropriately, the patient’s safety is possibly put at risk from the potential of surgical site infections. No specific literature data directly correlates immediate use sterilization with surgical site infection. …

Racial Justice, Hegemony, And Bias Incidents In U.S. Higher Education, Glyn Hughes

Formal administrative protocols for responding to bias incidents are now the norm in higher education. This article considers these developments by posing critical questions about racial justice work on campus, identifying key features of an under-acknowledged institutional racism, and contributing to discussions about ways that diversity and social justice efforts often reproduce rather than challenge systemic inequities.

This study is an examination of the stories four social studies teachers told after participating in one international professional development program. Drawing on theories of postcolonialism, this narrative inquiry uses interviews, observations, and artifacts to investigate if and to what degree travel to and study in China influences the understandings of one group of in-service social studies teachers. Its focus is the extent to which meeting the Other influenced the participants’ conceptualizations of global education and whether or not this experience allowed one group of American teachers to challenge their perceptual lenses with regards to their social studies curricula. The higher education systems throughout the continent of Africa are undergoing unprecedented challenges and are considered in crisis. African countries, including Ghana, all have in common ties to their colonial legacy whereby they are confronted with weak policies put in place by their colonizers. Having gained their independence, Africans should now take responsibility for the task of reforming their higher education system. To date, nothing substantial has been accomplished, with serious implications for weakening and damaging the structures of the foundation of their educational systems.
