The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of a phonetic reading approach, namely that published by the Economy Company, with a traditional basal reading approach upon reading achievement in the primary grades of the Peter G. Schmidt Elementary School, in Tumwater, Washington. A secondary purpose of the study was to compare the effects of the two approaches on spelling achievement in the second and third grades in the Peter G. ·Schmidt Elementary School.

It was the purpose of this study to (1) evaluate the implementation procedures of the nongraded reading program at Munich Elementary No. l; (2) determine whether reporting and recording student progress met the needs of the students and teachers; (3) discover any difficulties inherent in the present system of assigning and grouping children; and (4) relate the level of achievement experienced in this program to the previously employed program as revealed by an opinion survey of the teachers involved in the program.

Past experience has revealed a definite need to release children, at least partially, from the traditional ability groupings and allow more flexible groupings. The past also revealed that individual children's unique interests and abilities were not being provided for. Since the teaching of reading occupies a central position in the elementary grades, and since children have a wide range of reading abilities and interests, an investigation of individualized reading was prompted.

Because the administration of the Lincoln Unified School District, Stockton, California, felt a need to challenge all children, especially those at the lower and upper end of the scale of intelligence, a search was made for a more effective means of teaching reading. The purpose of this study was to analyze the reading group placement of children in grades one, two, and three of the Lodi Elementary School District for the 1956-1957 school year to determine if there is a difference in the success of boys and girls of the same chronological age in favor of the girls insofar as placement in a reading group is concerned. The variables were placement in a reading group, sex, chronological age, and grade level. Examination of the data collected was made to determine if younger children are as successful in reading attainment as their older classmates.

The purpose of this study was to discover if there is a relationship between reading loss and visual disability and to assay the reading losso that is characteristic for individuals with a visual disability. The intent was not to diagnose that all reading loss can be attributed to a visual disability or define visual defects, for the latter requires a careful examination by an eye specialist, but rather to determine if the child’s reading may be affected by a blurred visual image or by eye-muscle fatigue.
