The Cartographic Network: Re-Imagining University Learning Environments Through The Methodology Of Immersive Cartography, David Rousell
The Cartographic Network: Re-Imagining University Learning Environments Through The Methodology Of Immersive Cartography, David Rousell
David Rousell
This paper presents a discussion of the methodology, theory and key findings from an arts-based inquiry into academic learning environments entitled Cubic Reflections. The Cubic Reflections project involved a series of twelve site-specific cubes that were installed within the outdoor environments of a university campus in regional Australia. The cubes were designed to form a network of objects that reflected the aesthetic and ecological dimensions of the university’s learning environments. Students and staff were invited to both activate and build on this network by mapping and reflecting on their own movements within and between the twelve installations. This paper firstly …

Identifying Inviolable Behavioral Norms Of Campus Housing And Residence Life Professionals, Amy S. Hirschy, Maureen E. Wilson, John M. Braxton
Higher Education and Student Affairs Faculty Publications
Housing and residence life (HRL) administrators who lack knowledge about accepted professional behaviors risk violating normative boundaries, likely jeopardizing themselves or their clients (e.g., students, parents, colleagues). The purpose of this survey study was to understand if a normative structure exists for the administrative role performance of HRL professionals. Findings revealed six inviolable norms, some of which differ by personal and professional characteristics of HRL professionals. The authors offer recommendations to guide practice and research.

Toward A More Scientifically Literate Public, Michael Bass
Toward A More Scientifically Literate Public, Michael Bass
UCF Forum
As a society we do a terrible job of educating our children to become scientifically literate. Sure, we have STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs throughout the country, and with some justification we can brag about the successes of students that are in or who have graduated from such learning experiences.

Stepping Out With The Fop: Literacies Of Embodiment And Becoming In Youth Drama, Treavor Bogard
Stepping Out With The Fop: Literacies Of Embodiment And Becoming In Youth Drama, Treavor Bogard
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
Drawing upon perspectives of New Literacy Studies, characterization and gender performativity, this interpretive case study used Multimodal Inter(Action) Analysis and ethnographic methods to examine how a queer youth, Michael, embodied the fop character type as he acted in a youth theatre troupe. The study examines Michael’s embodiment of the fop as a composition process in drama that evoked discourses of queer masculinity and the performativity of selves becoming. Embodied composing of characterizations in the troupe, and specifically the fop, were multimodal designs that intertwined with Michael’s self-cultivation and self-efficacy as a queer youth.

The Confluence Of Stem Education And Language Learning: Curriculum Integration To Benefit Language Learners, Christian Joseph Engelbret
The Confluence Of Stem Education And Language Learning: Curriculum Integration To Benefit Language Learners, Christian Joseph Engelbret
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The number of elementary STEM schools has risen dramatically in the last decade. The national government has identified goals for preparing learners for the workforce in the STEM areas, while also decreasing the achievement gap between white students and their non-white peers. This research paper seeks to answer three central questions: 1) How can these various STEM disciplines be integrated in an effective and meaningful manner to improve both academic language and content area knowledge of English Learners? 2) What lesson design format best prepares teachers to implement a project-based or integrated curriculum? 3) How can partnerships between higher education …

Redefining The Core Competencies Of Future Healthcare Executives Under Healthcare Reform, Dianne B. Love, M. Femi Ayadi
Redefining The Core Competencies Of Future Healthcare Executives Under Healthcare Reform, Dianne B. Love, M. Femi Ayadi
Administrative Issues Journal
As the healthcare industry has evolved over the years, so too has the administration of healthcare organizations. The signing into law of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) has brought additional changes to the healthcare industry that will require changes to the healthcare administration curriculum. The movement toward a vertically integrated delivery system for healthcare has demanded that healthcare executives have a new set of skills and competencies. These competencies include management skills across hospitals, ancillary providers, physician practices, ambulatory settings, as well as skills in risk management and quality. Healthcare organizations can transform healthcare delivery through the …

Relationship Between First-Generation College Students' Expectations For Experiences With Faculty Members And Students' Success After The First Year, Christina D. Nelson
Relationship Between First-Generation College Students' Expectations For Experiences With Faculty Members And Students' Success After The First Year, Christina D. Nelson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As the landscape of higher education changes to allow increased access for first-generation college students (FGS), emerging research should take into account the unique nature of this at-risk population of students (Aspelmeier, Love, McGill, Elliott, & Pierce, 2012). These students tend to be less prepared for the rigors of college coursework (Horn & Bobbitt, 2000; Strayhorn, 2006; Thayer, 2000) and may lack appropriate expectations (Pascarella, Pierson, Wolniak, & Terenzini, 2004). In particular, FGS may struggle with understanding the importance of creating and maintaining relationships with faculty (Cotten & Wilson, 2006; Davis, 2010).
In order to discover any correlation between expectations …

Blogging And Microblogging For Enhancing The Research Accessibility, Nader Ale Ebrahim
Nader Ale Ebrahim
Scholarly blogs and Microblogs such as Twitter are increasingly attracting attention as new channels of science communication. Blogs and microblogging services like Twitter get your research seen by more non-academics than your peer reviewed papers will ever be. The importance of this is not to be dismissed. Blogs and microblogs are vital tools for academics to publicly communicate about research developments and findings. Academics can also gain feedback from other peers, as well as expand their networks and enhance research visibility. This presentation will provide guidelines on blogs and microblogs as tools for increasing the article visibility and citations. Increased …

Leadership Stories: Defining Gender In University Leadership, Tania Carlson Reis
Leadership Stories: Defining Gender In University Leadership, Tania Carlson Reis
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The leadership paths of successful women university presidents leading schools listed in the 2010 Carnegie Classification as being Research Universities, Very High Research are identified and described in the following manuscript. Two research questions guided the study: What is the path to the presidency? How do women university presidents recognize and negotiate barriers? Four female presidents were interviewed. The interviews were conducted at the president’s institution. Interviews were hand coded for themes related to the research questions. Findings indicated that women university presidents experience an uneven path to leadership that mirrors the labyrinth described by Eagly and Carli (2007). Participants …
An Examination Of The Factors That Impact Elementary School Principal's Perceptions Of Their Leadership Role, Kathryn M. Kish
An Examination Of The Factors That Impact Elementary School Principal's Perceptions Of Their Leadership Role, Kathryn M. Kish
HIM 1990-2015
A growing body of research supports the idea that large-scale school reform efforts often fail to create sustained change within the public school sector. When implementing deep organizational change, both novice and veteran educators are challenged to learn new skills, reexamine their instructional practice and content knowledge, and re-shape their underlying beliefs and values about schools. This qualitative study explored principals’ perceptions of their leadership roles in the school system. Data collection was done through a series of three interviews with three elementary school principals in Central Florida. In addition to their perceptions, it also studied factors that may influence …
Exploring The Differences Between Pre-Service Teachers' Analyses Of Various Informal Reading Inventory Results In The Elementary Grades, Tara A. Miller
Exploring The Differences Between Pre-Service Teachers' Analyses Of Various Informal Reading Inventory Results In The Elementary Grades, Tara A. Miller
HIM 1990-2015
Reading is a fundamental skill in our modern society; being able to read with comprehension and fluency is an important skill in all core academic subjects. Reading teachers are charged with the task to analyze student data in order to drive their instructional decisions. Informal Reading Inventories (IRIs) are one type of an informal reading assessment that teachers can use in the classroom to learn about student reading behaviors and drive instruction. Informal Reading Inventories assess fluency and comprehension. Research suggests that fluency and comprehension have a reciprocal relationship; meaning, if you improve one skill, you improve the other skill …
