Dissertations In Cacrep-Accredited Counseling Doctoral Programs: An Initial Investigation, L. Dianne Borders, Kelly L. Wester, Melissa J. Fickling, Nicole A. Adamson
Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision
Faculty in 38 CACREP-accredited doctoral programs in the US described their dissertation products over the last three years, composition of their dissertation committees, and their satisfaction ratings with dissertation products and processes. Results indicated traditional dissertation formats were predominant. Over half (54%) of completed dissertations were quantitative and 40% were qualitative. Committees typically included two or three counselor educators and at least one outside faculty member. Faculty were modestly satisfied with dissertations, citing the need for more rigor and consistency of standards. Higher satisfaction was related to committee composition as well as the use of a variety of research methods.

Three Popes: Lessons In Leadership, Valerie Christian
Three Popes: Lessons In Leadership, Valerie Christian
Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition
In Three Popes: Lessons in Leadership participants use selected leadership theories as a basis to comment on the leadership style and effectiveness of two former Bishops of Rome—John Paul II and Benedict XVI. The purpose is to hypothetically assist the incumbent pontiff, Francis, whose legacy—while looking promising—still is in its infancy. In the exercise, participants investigate the personal traits and life stories of three recent popes in an attempt to understand their professional style and effectiveness as leaders of the Roman Catholic Church. Using Pope Francis’ immediate predecessors as examples of good/bad leadership, teams recommend to Pope Francis ways to …

Confronting Pedagogy In “Confronting Globalization”: The Use Of Role-Play Simulations To Foster Interdisciplinary/Global Learning, Lesley A. Denardis
Political Science & Global Affairs Faculty Publications
With the increasing emphasis on global learning as part of the redesigned institutional mission of American higher education, there will arguably be a need for a variety of global learning experiences across the undergraduate curriculum. Efforts to incorporate global learning in course content at home by globalizing or internationalizing the curricula are already underway at many institutions of higher education. This article offers a set of recommendations for educators wishing to globalize their courses by adopting an interdisciplinary approach to global learning specifically through the use of role-play simulations. As a problem-based pedagogy, role-play simulations are uniquely equipped to deliver …

The Value Of A Four-Year Degree Is Increasing, John J. Petillo
The Value Of A Four-Year Degree Is Increasing, John J. Petillo
SHU Faculty Publications
The value of a four-year college degree has never been greater. This is particularly true for graduates in comparison to their peers who have lower levels of education.
The globalized job market is hyper-competitive, and a four-year degree is increasingly a base requirement that’s necessary just to get your foot in the door for an interview. Millennials recognize this reality since a third of them hold at least a bachelor’s degree. This makes them the best-educated generation in history.
A college education enriches not only the person who receives it, but society overall. We must never forget that an informed …

Innovative Public Education Or Glorified Homeschooling: Funding Full-Time K-12 Online Learning, Michael K. Barbour
Innovative Public Education Or Glorified Homeschooling: Funding Full-Time K-12 Online Learning, Michael K. Barbour
Education Faculty Publications
While there has been some improvement in what is known about supplemental K-12 online learning, there continues to be a lack of evidence to guide the practice of full-time K-12 online learning. This paper examines the literature and research into the funding of full-time K-12 online learning programs. As one of the few areas where a reasonable body of literature exists, and where both progress and neo-liberal groups have reach relative agreement. It concludes that full-time K-12 online learning costs less than traditional brick-and-mortar, and that policymakers should consider the nature of instruction when determining funding for full-time K-12 online …

This report is the third of a series of annual reports by the National Education Policy Center (NEPC) on virtual education in the U.S. The NEPC reports contribute to the existing evidence and discourse on virtual education by providing an objective analysis of the evolution and performance of full-time, publicly funded K-12 virtual schools. Specifically, the NEPC reports: analyze the universe of proposed state bills related to virtual education; assess the research evidence that bears on K-12 virtual teaching and learning; describe the policy issues raised by available evidence; analyze the growth and performance of full-time virtual schools; and, offer …

Lessons From Pope Francis In Managing A University, John J. Petillo
Lessons From Pope Francis In Managing A University, John J. Petillo
SHU Faculty Publications
Pope Francis is trending as the model for transforming corporate cultures through humble leadership. As a Roman Catholic University, Sacred Heart is perhaps more attuned than most colleges to what might be called "The Management Secrets of Pope Francis," but they can be applied to institutions of higher learning anywhere. Whether administrators, faculty or staff, we are here because of the students. It is imperative that we consider their interests in everything we do. Like Pope Francis, we must shed the trappings of our titles and serve.
