Gender Differences And Factors Related To The Disposition Toward Cohabitation, Terry Huffman, Karen Chang, Pat Rausch, Nora Schaffer
Gender Differences And Factors Related To The Disposition Toward Cohabitation, Terry Huffman, Karen Chang, Pat Rausch, Nora Schaffer
Faculty Publications - College of Education
This paper explored factors associated with the disposition toward cohabitation. Analysis of the data revealed that, among the total sample, a willingness to cohabit is related to being older, lower levels of religiosity, more liberal attitudes toward sexual behavior, less traditional views of marriage, and less traditional views of sex roles. However, analysis further indicated a gender difference in the way various factors are associated with the disposition to cohabit. For the female subsample these factors are generally related to the willingness to cohabit. However, this was not the case for the male subsample. Only two factors were significantly related …
The Faith-Learning Integration Movement In Christian Higher Education: Slogan Or Substance?, Ken Badley
The Faith-Learning Integration Movement In Christian Higher Education: Slogan Or Substance?, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
The challenge of thinking Christianly in a secular world is a favorite topic of discussion among Christian scholars, especially among those of evangelical persuasion. But what does it mean to integrate faith and learning? The concept is fraught with semantic and conceptual ambiguity. Through a historical lens, Ken Badley delineates the varieties of meaning implied by the integration-of-faith-and-learning construct as a useful first step in advancing coherent scholarly dialogue. Badley includes a compendium of recommended readings.

Computers In The Science Classroom, Piroz Mohseni
Computers In The Science Classroom, Piroz Mohseni
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Computers have become an integral part of the education system, and computer literacy is an important asset for any college student. Many students find that their exposure to computers at the high school level was not satisfactory. Thus they hesitate to enroll in computer enhanced mathematics or science courses at the college level. This paper discusses some of the avenues for secondary science instructors to incorporate computers into their current curriculum. It also examines computer use to enhance students' understanding of science and mathematical concepts.
Understanding Vs. Knowing, John R. Stiles
Understanding Vs. Knowing, John R. Stiles
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
How well do students understand concepts in science? Are teachers evaluating what students actually comprehend or merely how well they can recite information? How valuable are tests? What do they actually measure? How appropriate are the lessons to the children's developmental levels?
These and similar questions should be an important part of every teacher's evaluation procedure. We need to stop and ask ourselves such questions as: Why do I want my students to know this? Will knowing this make a difference in their lives? Is it important? Do the students really understand this? How can I be sure? From here, …

An Analysis Of Physical Science Textbooks For Scientific Literacy, Hussein A. Baarah, Trudi L. Volk
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Developing the scientifically literate individual is considered to be an important objective of science education in the United States (Blough and Schwartz 1990, Maarschalk 1988, Murane and Raizen 1988, National Science Teachers Association 1971, 1982; and Simpson and Anderson 1981). The scientifically literate person understands how science, technology and society influence one another, and is able to use this knowledge in everyday decision making (AAAS 1989, Yager and Harms 1981).

Science Notes - Ice Cream: An Edible Experiment In Thermodynamics
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Ice keeps things cold because it absorbs energy from its surroundings, melting as it does so. The temperature at which a solid melts, called its melting point, is the same temperature at which the liquid form freezes. For pure water, this is 0° or 32° F. However, if some other substance, such as salt, is added to the water or ice, the freezing/melting point temperature is lowered. Thus, you can use salted ice to freeze liquid water.

Editor's Corner - Editorial Privileges, Carl W. Bollwinkel
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The editorship of the Iowa Science Teachers Journal has brought many privileges to this editor. Perhaps the greatest of these is the responsibility of determining what is most helpful for Journal readers and authors-those who establish the standards of science education in Iowa. This has not been an easy task and has often led to disagreement. This disagreement has been the basis of professional growth for writers, readers and editors-especially this editor. It is truly a privilege to maintain standards of quality.

Influence Of Reduced Leaching On Growth Of Seedlings Of Black Locust Inoculated With Rhizobia, William R. Graves, Sandra R. Anfinson
Influence Of Reduced Leaching On Growth Of Seedlings Of Black Locust Inoculated With Rhizobia, William R. Graves, Sandra R. Anfinson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Seedlings of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) were inoculated with compatible rhizobia and irrigated twice each week with solution containing either 50 or 150 mg nitrogen/L. Leaching fraction treatments of 0, 0.2, or 0.4 were maintained for 6 weeks. Seedlings supplied 50 mg nitrogen/L grew poorly compared co planes supplied 150 mg nitrogen/L regardless of leaching fraction. Dry masses of shoots and of entire planes were lower for seedlings in the 0 and 0.2 leaching fraction treatments compared with chose in the 0.4 treatment. Neither leaching fraction nor applied nitrogen concentration appeared co affect the number of nodules per plant, …
Age And Developmental History Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii
Age And Developmental History Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Iowa fens are small, mineorotrophic peatlands maintained by shallow groundwater. Eighteen fen sites located across northern Iowa were mapped and radiocarbon dated to assess the timing of initial peat accumulation. The radiocarbon ages span the Holocene, ranging from 1,240 to 10,900 B.P.; however most fens postdate 5,000 yr B.P. The dominance of late-Holocene ages suggests that Holocene climatic change may have strongly influenced the record of peat accumulation. During the mid-Holocene Iowa was warmer and drier than at present, and peat was degraded or accumulated slowly in fens. The range of ages also implies that the commencement and subsequent rate …

The job of the secondary principal has always been and continues to be important, demanding, and crucial to the success of a school. Many of the functions and elements of leadership required of school administrators in the past remain relevant and essential today. However, new dimensions are being demanded, and a new focus is forming for the leaders of the modern school.

Ideas Of Ideal Administration: A Reflective Essay, Gerald L. Shafrath

I chose Educational Administration graduate work with the ultimate goal of becoming an athletic director. I also thought if I knew more about the administrative perspective I would be a more effective teacher. I believed if I knew more about school law, school and public relations, organizational skills, supervision and evaluation techniques in the educational setting, I could enhance my teaching and coaching abilities. After four years of techniques, law, and research on education administration, I now believe the best administrators are not those who write the best papers or get the best test scores, but instead those who can …
A Reflection On The Roles Of The Secondary School Principal: A Reflective Essay, Steven J. Shanks
A Reflection On The Roles Of The Secondary School Principal: A Reflective Essay, Steven J. Shanks
Graduate Research Papers
I believe that educating children is the most important task that a nation undertakes. This puts the leader of individual school buildings, the principal, at the heart of not only the educational system, but of the nation itself. In no other position of employment can one person do more to help or hurt the mental and emotional growth of young people. The attitudes and successes of our youth, who will determine the attitudes and successes of our nation, are held in the hands of our educational system. The success of the system inevitably lies in the grip of its leaders; …

Administrative Style Determined By Experience And Personality, Kelli Trausch
Graduate Research Papers
In this reflective essay I will share my personal characteristics and background which have colored my view of life in general and administration in particular. These observations, along with the knowledge and skills added through work experience and course studies, result in a selected style of administration which I believe will work well for me as an individual. References supporting the success of my selected style of administration through site-based management have been included. Site-based management is the delegation of authority by the central office or hierarchy to the principal and teachers. This management style has also been called teacher-empowerment, …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools: A Reflective Essay, Craig Josh Youel

My perception of what an administrator is and does has gone through a great evolution since my first encounter with a principal as a student in junior high school. When in junior high, the principal was someone you didn't want to go see. This changed in high school when I thought the principal just took care of discipline problems, organized things, and sat in his or her office waiting for problems to arise. The evolution continued when as a teacher, I saw the principal as the boss, the disciplinarian, the controller of the budget, the problem-solver, the evaluator and the …
