Feminists Face The Job Market: Q & A (Questions & Anecdotes), Elisabeth Rose Gruner
Feminists Face The Job Market: Q & A (Questions & Anecdotes), Elisabeth Rose Gruner
English Faculty Publications
When I began work on this paper I designed a questionnaire to be filled out by women who had recently been on the job market. It asked for fairly detailed information: titles of accepted articles, writing samples, and dissertation, number of MLA interviews, other interviews, campus visits, kinds of questions asked, etc. I had hoped, I think, to develop a magic formula—twelve writing sample requests divided by three interviews multiplied by two publications equals an 87% chance of getting a job, for example. But I had trouble developing the formula; no common patterns emerged. The first thing I did learn …

A Preferred Vision For Administering Middle Schools: A Reflective Essay, Cody J. Vincent
Graduate Research Papers
Minnie Pearl, a traditional performer with the Grand Old Opry, summed up the purpose of this paper many years ago with part of her act. In it, she was cavorting with the audience about the special attributes her boss had in regards to leadership. It was quite amusing in that many of the things she joked about hit home in so many ways. The one thought she finshed [sic] with, however, seemed to sum up the entire routine and perhaps those problems associated with decision making and leadership itself, "His aim was high, but he had no ammunition."
Cultural Constructivist Approach To The Teaching Of Evolution, William W. Cobern
Cultural Constructivist Approach To The Teaching Of Evolution, William W. Cobern
Scientific Literacy and Cultural Studies Project
Educators typically think that one teaches evolution to develop students' conceptual understanding of evolution. It is assumed that if students understand evolution they will believe it. From a constructivist perspective it can be argued that understanding and belief, though related, are distinct concepts each of which is a potential goal for instruction. Though there are good reasons why belief should not be an instructional goal, achieving conceptual understanding requires that issues of belief be addressed. The point is that students are not likely to gain much understanding of something that they dismiss outright as unbelievable. What counts as believable for …
Gender Differences And Factors Related To The Disposition Toward Cohabitation, Terry Huffman, Karen Chang, Pat Rausch, Nora Schaffer
Gender Differences And Factors Related To The Disposition Toward Cohabitation, Terry Huffman, Karen Chang, Pat Rausch, Nora Schaffer
Faculty Publications - College of Education
This paper explored factors associated with the disposition toward cohabitation. Analysis of the data revealed that, among the total sample, a willingness to cohabit is related to being older, lower levels of religiosity, more liberal attitudes toward sexual behavior, less traditional views of marriage, and less traditional views of sex roles. However, analysis further indicated a gender difference in the way various factors are associated with the disposition to cohabit. For the female subsample these factors are generally related to the willingness to cohabit. However, this was not the case for the male subsample. Only two factors were significantly related …
The Faith-Learning Integration Movement In Christian Higher Education: Slogan Or Substance?, Ken Badley
The Faith-Learning Integration Movement In Christian Higher Education: Slogan Or Substance?, Ken Badley
Faculty Publications - College of Education
The challenge of thinking Christianly in a secular world is a favorite topic of discussion among Christian scholars, especially among those of evangelical persuasion. But what does it mean to integrate faith and learning? The concept is fraught with semantic and conceptual ambiguity. Through a historical lens, Ken Badley delineates the varieties of meaning implied by the integration-of-faith-and-learning construct as a useful first step in advancing coherent scholarly dialogue. Badley includes a compendium of recommended readings.

Computers In The Science Classroom, Piroz Mohseni
Computers In The Science Classroom, Piroz Mohseni
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Computers have become an integral part of the education system, and computer literacy is an important asset for any college student. Many students find that their exposure to computers at the high school level was not satisfactory. Thus they hesitate to enroll in computer enhanced mathematics or science courses at the college level. This paper discusses some of the avenues for secondary science instructors to incorporate computers into their current curriculum. It also examines computer use to enhance students' understanding of science and mathematical concepts.
Understanding Vs. Knowing, John R. Stiles
Understanding Vs. Knowing, John R. Stiles
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
How well do students understand concepts in science? Are teachers evaluating what students actually comprehend or merely how well they can recite information? How valuable are tests? What do they actually measure? How appropriate are the lessons to the children's developmental levels?
These and similar questions should be an important part of every teacher's evaluation procedure. We need to stop and ask ourselves such questions as: Why do I want my students to know this? Will knowing this make a difference in their lives? Is it important? Do the students really understand this? How can I be sure? From here, …

An Analysis Of Physical Science Textbooks For Scientific Literacy, Hussein A. Baarah, Trudi L. Volk
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Developing the scientifically literate individual is considered to be an important objective of science education in the United States (Blough and Schwartz 1990, Maarschalk 1988, Murane and Raizen 1988, National Science Teachers Association 1971, 1982; and Simpson and Anderson 1981). The scientifically literate person understands how science, technology and society influence one another, and is able to use this knowledge in everyday decision making (AAAS 1989, Yager and Harms 1981).

Science Notes - Ice Cream: An Edible Experiment In Thermodynamics
Science Notes - Ice Cream: An Edible Experiment In Thermodynamics
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Ice keeps things cold because it absorbs energy from its surroundings, melting as it does so. The temperature at which a solid melts, called its melting point, is the same temperature at which the liquid form freezes. For pure water, this is 0° or 32° F. However, if some other substance, such as salt, is added to the water or ice, the freezing/melting point temperature is lowered. Thus, you can use salted ice to freeze liquid water.
