Immaculate Deception: One Educator's Exploration Into The Systemic Shaming Of Women In Ireland, Alanna Diane Scully
Immaculate Deception: One Educator's Exploration Into The Systemic Shaming Of Women In Ireland, Alanna Diane Scully
Graduate College Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores the topic of shame through my perspective as a pro-choice woman and future educator. It tells of the long relationship I have had with shame, which began when I had my first abortion. It also describes the history of shame inflicted on the women of Ireland, who continue to fight for their reproductive rights. I use these narratives to support my position that educators have a responsibility to create safe spaces for controversial topics and vulnerable populations on university campuses.
Aligning Secondary Benchmarks In High School Curriculums Across Content Areas, Michael George Forrest
Aligning Secondary Benchmarks In High School Curriculums Across Content Areas, Michael George Forrest
Theses and Dissertations
This applied dissertation was designed to provide insight into aligning secondary benchmarks in a high school curriculum across content areas to prevent students from failing reading in a South Florida high school. Few studies have investigated the effects of the alignment of secondary benchmarks across content areas. The study focuses on a case study design for data collection to reveal its analysis. The researcher utilizes content analyses and a panel of experts in the field of education to review the protocol and review the assessments, using open-ended interview protocol procedures on more than 13 teachers. The teachers’ positions can be …
Self-Efficacy Of General And Special Education Teachers Regarding Inclusion, Karen P. Sims
Self-Efficacy Of General And Special Education Teachers Regarding Inclusion, Karen P. Sims
Theses and Dissertations
This sequential mixed methods study was designed to compare the perceptions, attitudes, and self-efficacy of elementary and middle school general and special education teachers and administrators regarding inclusion. The study identified specific areas of needed support and training to improve these factors. The study took place at a kindergarten through 8 research site in the southeastern portion of the United States. The problem addressed was that school administrators are uncertain about the perceptions of general and special education teachers’ self-efficacy regarding effective instructional inclusion of students with special needs in the general education classroom.

Decreasing Incidents Of High School Cyberbullying, Erica Nichole Dawson
Decreasing Incidents Of High School Cyberbullying, Erica Nichole Dawson
Theses and Dissertations
With the Internet being an ever-growing part of everyone’s lives, the nature of bullying has evolved. Cyberbullying is a new problem with far reaching implications and is a problem that is growing fast. However, there is a limited amount of research available. Most of the research has been conducted from 2007 until the present with little research available before 2001. The purpose of this study was to decrease the percentage of incidents (students participating and students victimized) of cyberbullying at a public high school in a large school, suburban school district, in the southeastern region of the United States, by …
The Relationship Of Underrepresented Minority Status With Choice Process When Considering The Physician Assistant Profession, Christina Hanson
The Relationship Of Underrepresented Minority Status With Choice Process When Considering The Physician Assistant Profession, Christina Hanson
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Representation of African Americans, Latinos, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Alaskan Natives in the Physician Assistant (PA) profession is not growing at the same rate as in the general population, leaving these groups underrepresented in the PA profession. To increase the diversity of the PA profession, the diversity of matriculating PA students must first increase. The purpose of this study was to investigate the choice process of underrepresented minority (URM) and non-URM applicants and matriculants to PA school, to identify trends in the choice processes of URM individuals considering the PA profession. In this quantitative, retrospective study, chi-square analysis was performed …
Childhood Trauma In Education: Addressing The Needs Of Students Who Have Experienced Trauma Through Trauma Informed Practices, Claire R. Steffen
Childhood Trauma In Education: Addressing The Needs Of Students Who Have Experienced Trauma Through Trauma Informed Practices, Claire R. Steffen
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This literature review explores the background of trauma, the physiological effects of trauma on the developing child, and effective trauma informed strategies to assist educators in meeting the challenging needs of all students, especially those who have experienced trauma. Longitudinal research shows that trauma is prevalent and its effects are long lasting. Various effects of trauma contribute to dysfunction in brain processes, which results in academic and behavioral deficits. Trauma informed strategies such as Flexible Framework, Supportive Trauma Interventions for Educators (STRIVE), and Making SPACE for Learning are explained to assist educators in better meeting the needs of students who …
Impact Of A Practicum In Education Course Designed To Recruit Stem Majors Into A Teacher Education Program, Rebecca A. Spencer
Impact Of A Practicum In Education Course Designed To Recruit Stem Majors Into A Teacher Education Program, Rebecca A. Spencer
Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests that the most efficient way of improving students’ performance, in mathematics and science, is by recruiting and retaining highly qualified mathematics and science teachers. This study augments the body of research aimed at the recruitment of STEM majors to the field of education. The purpose of this study was to determine how a practicum course, developed to recruit freshman and sophomore STEM majors into a teacher preparation program, impacted participants' perceptions of teaching as a profession. The impact of this course, which utilized a reflective cycle framework for evaluating participants’ reflections as the foundation of the program, was …
Not-So-Compehensive Health Education: Teacher Attitudes Toward Heteronormative Sexuality Education, Sarah Elizabeth Burnham
Not-So-Compehensive Health Education: Teacher Attitudes Toward Heteronormative Sexuality Education, Sarah Elizabeth Burnham
Theses and Dissertations
Drawing upon queer theory, this study investigated health teachers’ interactions with the heteronormative sexuality education curriculum as prescribed by the 1988 South Carolina Comprehensive Health Education Act (SC CHEA). A survey composed of Likert-type and open-ended response items measured three constructs: the amount of preparation to teach health education, self-efficacy in teaching sexuality education, and teachers’ levels of alignment with, or rejection of, heteronormativity. A convenience sample of middle and high-school teachers in SC public schools responsible for teaching health education yielded 181 responses. Descriptive statistics of the respondents precedes non-parametric analyses of correlations between constructs and among constructs and …
Consequences Of Postsecondary Education Institution Policies And Practices: A Structural Model Of Tuition Costs, Student Financial Aid, Selectivity, Proximity, And Enrolled Undergraduate Students' Aggregate Capital, Aaron Michael Skira
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
For decades, U.S. higher education enrollments have been stratified with students from wealthier households consistently attending postsecondary institutions at higher rates than low-income students. The disparity in postsecondary participation rates by family income is a systemic issue (M. J. Bailey & Dynarski, 2011), meaning the phenomenon is the result of a combination of factors within society rather than one factor alone. Guided by a critical theory perspective and the assumptions behind Perna’s (2006) proposed conceptual model for student college choice research, the current study sought to examine the extent to which policies and practices at the postsecondary institution level may …
